Well I got the news last week that my kids could be Diabetic! I am beside myself and just don't know what to do. I have been reading up on Diabetes and there is so much that could happen and go wrong with the body. Kids these days are being diagnosed with Diabetes more than adults. My kids are over wieght, but who isn't over wieght these days? I have been trying myself to loose wieght and it is so hard! I am on two different diet pills the doctor put me on because I was ready to have a heart attack my chlestrol was over 300! She said thats it you have got to go on a diet or die! I thought I am only 40 and I have two young kids that need me so I better get in better shape. Now I am doing better, I think, but now my babies are in trouble and I have read so much on Diabetes,I feel like I should be a doctor! My son's blood work will not come in till Monday and we are all just about to go birzerk!! My little girl will not have her blood work till this next week and we are not looking forward to that. I have read that there are three different types of Diabetes and then Pre-Turm Diabetes. I hope they are neither and I have told them both they are going to have to get the wieght off and start eating right. My little girl have already been diagnosed with Fatty Liver Disease. That was hard also to deal with. I have tryed to put them on diets and make the whole family start eating right and it just back fires on me. They wont eat the food and wine and cry because they are hungry and there is nothing to eat in the house, when there is plenty to eat, they just won't eat it. I have apple sauce and fruit and vegtables, I just can't get them to eat it. They want Hambergers or Pizza or chips and things like junk food. I just don't know what to do anymore! If I don't get the wieght off them I really feel like they will not out live me,must less live a long happy life. Please pray for my kids and me that I can find the right way to help them with there wieght and everything else in there lives. Sorry to rumble on, I just feel like you are all my friends and I really need someone to talk to right now. Thanks Again!

My husband was a pharma rep specializing in diabetes drugs at one time, so I'd be happy to forward any specific questions you have if you'd write me offline. However, I might also suggest that you sneak fruits, grains, etc., into their meals. I have seen shows on television, but couldn't give you one immediately. Try looking up this info on a general Google, or look through the Food Network' s site, or try VegSource.com (I think that's right), which is a vegetarian site with one of the best homeschooling swap area and information areas I've seen in a while. I'm not sure what is the connection between vegetarianism and homeschooling, but it's a good one! Most importantly, prayer changes things! Many people have heard the doctor, went to the Ultimate Physician in prayer, and then returned to find a divine healing. Don't doubt what God can do!

Hello,
I will be praying for your kids. My husband is a diabetic, it runs in the family strong on both sides. My family and his, we were told to watch the kids closely and that is what we are doing. I will keep you in my prayer's as well, so that you have the strength and guidance. Trying to get kids to watch what they eat is hard.
Blessings,
Lynn

I hope you have gotten some good news since this post, but either way, you're doing the right thing to make their diets healthier. It will be harder and harder to change the older they get. I have heard it takes about 6 weeks, I think, to develop a taste for something. I'm sure going cold turkey is hard for them, but it will save their lives. Saying a prayer for all of you.

Diabetes runs in my family on both sides. Because of that, I don't allow my kids to eat a lot of stuff that others around them do. God has blessed my efforts in an unexpected way. My daughter is allergic to milk, and my son is allergic to nuts. Because of the allergies, I have been able to say no firmly to their grandparents, who always want to load them up on junk. I tell them I have to read the labels first, and then veto most of the junk.
Luckily, my kids both love fruit. In our house, fresh blueberries are the special treats they ask for, and we make all fruit smoothies in the blender a few times each week.
Good luck! I don't know how old your kids are, but my three year old can grasp the concept that some things taste good, but are not good because they can make your heart slower, your body more tired, and give you holes in your teeth. She does not understand it all, but when explained the facts without forces, she usually chooses the healthy over the unhealthy. I hope this helps.
