Getting ready for a 50 state study

We won't actually be doing a 50 state study until this coming school year, but as I have already started lesson planning and getting a game plan together I have been seeking out resources.

The first thing hubby and I decided to do was join a Yahoo group geared toward exchanging postcards.  Some groups are for homeschoolers only, others are open to anyone.  It is our hope that this exchange will help with our geography studies and lend itself well to our 50 state study.  Obviously it will take time to collect cards from all 50 states, but I figure since we're starting in January that by the time our school year starts in late August (probably) that we should have a pretty decent amount.  We've already made several trades and the cards are starting to show up in our mail.  Ds1 has gotten really excited about this project.  I am so grateful to a fellow homeschooling mom from one of the monthly activities we attend that mentioned this to me.

I also came across The Fifty Nifty United States over the weekend.  I really like the printable crossword and individual state worksheets this site offers.

21 January 2008 - idea for your study

Not sure if you need ideas...but this one came to mind.

We have enojoyed The Scrambled States of America Game and given it as a gift many, many times.
It's a game of chance and skill so anyone could win. We play with our non-readers too.

I purchased the game at Wal-mart but haven't seen it there lately...could just have been Christmas rush.

hope this helps!

Blessings from the below zero little farm,

Jenny

We are doing the 50 states with My Fathers World Adventures, we are having a good time with it. I have a cookbook, I will look up the name for you where you can cook something from all the states, thats fun! Also we are doing birds in science so we looked at all the state birds. You will have fun doing that with the postcards, if you need a KY, send me a private message and I will get one out to you.

What a great idea. Bet that will be fun for you ds.
Thank you for the kind words about my dog. She is very special. We usually lose our dogs from old age so this one is only about 7 yrs old. But she has been a great pet.

I have been doing state geography this year with ds. It has been very interesting and the postcard exchanges have really inspired him to learn more. Thanks for suggesting this group to me!

How about the state quarters? We've been collecting them for years. They've been very useful for our state studies.

Just a thought, I don't mean to throw more on your plate. :o)

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

That is such a great idea. Might even sound like something we want to do in a year or so. I'll have to remember this post! Also, you typed about red dirt on Maui over at my blog? Now, I know exactly what you mean.....but I'm thinkin' MOST would not even 'hear' the red dirt/no a/c combo and just say "YOU lived on MAUI? And you're COMPLAINING".....LOL. Just another thing to help us keep in all in perspective.
Also, about the contact lenses. My very best friend of my WHOLE life has worn contacts for almost 40 years now (her doc calls her a 'hard core' lens wearer, I think you'd fit into that category).....what you wrote reminded me of the time she scratched her cornea when we were just kids.....12 or 13. Out at a campground, nearest hospital MILES away....I can't even imagine that kind of pain. All turned out well....and at the age of 45, I finally decided to try it. I'm ok with it, but use my glasses at home, as I can see close up better with them than the multi-focal contacts.

All the best with your geography project. We were on a postcard exchange group a while back. Also did flat travelling on a home school yahoo group. If you ever want to do a project on Europe or Ireland/UK I'd love to help! Deb x
