Tightwad Tuesday

A special thanks goes to Mary for hosting Tightwad Tuesday!

My Tightwad Tuesday tip is to set aside a specific  amount of money every paycheck (or every other paycheck, as I personally do) toward clothing and shoe expenses.  I do this as part of our freedom account.  Our state usually offers a week of tax free back to school shopping each year when clothing, shoes, etc. that cost $50 or less per item are tax free.  Most stores run good sales during this time which adds to the savings.  It's always nice to be able to buy what we need for our growing boys outright (in other words, we can pay for it then and there - no charge cards!).  However, it's great to have this as a "running account" of sorts throughout the entire year.  You never know when you will happen upon a good sale.  For example, I had to run an errand that took me to Toys R Us this past Sunday.  I had no idea that they were offering an additional 50% off clearance clothing and shoes in the Babies R Us section of the store.  I was able to pick up a couple of pairs of shoes (Reebok and Skechers), a pair of pants, and a couple of shirts that ds2 will be able to use in the future for a fantastic price.  Reg. price for everything would have been $70 - I paid $24.  That may still seem like a lot to some, but it's not much more than most of the thrift stores around here would have charged (yes, they can be pricey here) for used items.

Happy Tightwad Tuesday!

Saving money is always a good idea! You mentioned that your husband does not always finish the coffee in the morning at Pam's. I'd save that too! I use left over coffee for flavoring milk shakes or even reheat it if it is just a day old.

Personally, I love sales. I buy my daughter's clothes like that too. She wanted hoodies for Christmas. I told her to wait until Jan. when Areopostle reduced them from $29.99 to $8.99. Then you can get three for the same price as one! I like the idea of a freedom account too. I hate to do charge cards!

Jenn - I wish I could get him to save it and reheat it!

It's great to pour into the compost bin or onto acid loving plants though. That's just an expensive way to feed both of those though.

I love the Freedom Account. I just never had a name for it ! [0; It is sooooo true about having it and when you need it ... you can get it debt free !!!! Yeah !!! I love the idea that your state has for tax free time period. Neat-O . I think kids 16 and under get tax free on their clothes here in BC, Canada. I love it. My oldest is so tall I have to make sure they know he is still young enough to get it. [0=

Thank you for sharing !!!

How wonderful! I wish that this could be made a federal law: allowing one week a year to forgo taxing back to school clothing items.

What a great idea! It is always stressful here when someone needs a pair of shoes. DH says the kids need to pay for it themselves, yet in suburbia there is nothing for kids to do for money. Maybe I should just place some of my grocery money in an envelope.. thanks for sharing :)
