Natural Paths

26 April 2008

Look who has been stopping by for a snack...

Last weekend dh headed out to the garage and would only say he was making a surprise for all of us.  What did he construct?  Two bird feeders!  They need to be a bit more stable so we'll be repositioning them, but this has been such a wonderful week to sit excitedly by the windows to see who drops by for a snack.  Ds2 alerts us by yelling "Bird!  Bird!" or "Bue Jay!  Blue Jay!" (every bird as far as his 2yo mind is concerned is a blue jay - LOL).  We have had a blue jay stopping by, but it's more interested in eating our cat's food on the porch than anything we have to offer in the feeders.  Ds1 loves the cardinals that come many times each day.  The biggest thrill for me, however, was the day that ds1 started yelling "Mom, there's a weird bird in the feeder!"  It was not a weird bird at all - it was a red-bellied woodpecker.  It was the first we've seen this year and so beautiful.

Mrs. Cardinal.......

Mr. Cardinal (ds1 says it looks like he is bowing to us and thanking us for the food).......

Red-bellied woodpecker.......

I really wish I could get wonderful up-close shots like I have seen on other blogs, but the feeders are a good distance away from our windows and zooming in any further than I did only results in a horribly blurry photo.

Some fun online resources to go along with these birds.......

We've been having a good time watching our bird feeder, too. But right now both boys are here and wanted me to tell you that they saw a snake today---a garder (or is it garter?) snake---not poisonous at all, but was very exciting. DS1 described him as having a shiny head, grey body, purple tongue (maybe), and black eyes, and about a foot long. They wanted you to know that you are not alone now in snake sightings. They had seen one last year while returning bottles: a lady had a bag of bottles from her camp, and found an unexpected stow-away in it. It slithered under the claw machine. She was not amused, but the boys thought it was great. That's it for our snake stories. I hope you have few-to-no more sightings yourself.

Great photos! Sounds like you're getting lots of exciting visitors. Bird watching is so much fun! Oh, if you are interested, on my side bar I have a little Northern Cardinal study I typed up when we were studying them. I plan to hopefully type up more studies this summer.

Awesome! :') I miss having feeders near our windows. We had them during warm weather for a couple seasons, but they became pretty messy, and our dogs were way too interested. I keep hoping to come up with a solution so we can have feeders again. . .

I'll live through your photos for now, if you don't mind.

Thanks for sharing!

That's so cool. We have small birds that just fly into our living room sometimes. One of those times I heard a small commotion and went into the living room to find that my sons had closed all doors so that the bird could not get out. I had to explain to them that birds need to be free and asked them to open the door. Boys! You lived on Maui? That's cool. I am feeling much better, thanks for your concern.

Very cool! My boys are interested in birds, too. We do not currently have a bird feeder, but we will have to think about getting one!
