Today we had the pleasure of visiting the Spring Creek Audobon Center in Denton, NE. It is a beautiful expanse of tallgrass prairie, with wagon ruts left from the Oregon Trail and a brand-new education building for visitors to learn more about the prairies of Nebraska. Here you can see a host of native species of birds, plants and insects, with an example of a native wildflower butterfly garden.
Gardens planted with native plants have numerous benefits:
They are educational.
Once they are established, they have no need of watering.
They have a natural resistance to destructive insects and thus need no chemicals to protect them.
They are an ideal food source for native species of birds and insects.
Also take a look at upcoming events and a description of their field trip program in case you would like to arrange a trip with your homeschooling group!
One thing I love about visiting prairie lands is that there is something new every visit. Many of the flowers bloom for only short periods of time so there are always new plants to discover. A great stop for some nature journaling! And if you do not have a nature journal yet, here is a simple pattern to make one.
Take several pieces of plain white paper. Fold them and cover with a piece of construction paper for the cover. Staple in the crease. Collect magazine pictures of local plants and animals and glue them all over the cover. Enjoy!
