When I moved here, I was surprised to find that Nebraska is such a hotspot for fellow birdwatchers. I'm not that serious about bird watching, but I do like to know who's visiting my feeder. And if I hear of a population of interesting birds come to roost, I'll go aways out of my way to see them.
Everyone who has the chance should take some time to see our national bird, the bald eagle, in the wild. Nebraska has great opportunities for this, because we are far enough south that some birds winter here and far enough north that many make this there summer nesting spot as well.
I once saw a bald eagle perched on a piece of driftwood in the Platte River while driving from Lincoln to Omaha on highway six. It was winter and the river, so aptly named, was icy. There stood this majestic bird, almost as large as his perch, staring at the bridge.
During my first trip to Squaw Creek in Mound City, MO, we saw over thirty bald eagles...some juveniles with their dark brown plumage often mistaken for the golden eagle and many adults with their characteristic black bodies and white heads. I highly recommend this natural wetlands reserve to anyone interested in birding or wildlife in general. There is good hiking and, as a vitally important stop during migration, it is packed with interesting species. OK, so there I go with a short hop across the border...but I did not even know it! I thought Mound City was in NE until I went to search for a link. Rulo, right next to Mound City is, though.
Another place to view these magnificent creatures is here, listed with VisitNebraska.org:
