If you have juniors in High School, and are looking for a means of providing lasting lessons in leadership and civil government, here is a great program for the young men and women in our state. Unfortunately, this site does not currently have application information or deadlines available. An Omaha homeschooling group is accepting nominations for delegates, so if you are interested, contact me and I will help you get in contact.
The event itself is June 4-10. From their website:
Cornhusker Boys'
State is an effort on the part of The American Legion to provide to young men
of Nebraska knowledge of fundamental principles of American Government through
actual practice at all levels of state government. It will give all an opportunity
to study their government to understand it, to respect it, and to preserve it.
In substance, its purpose is to teach our boys that there is nothing fundamentally
wrong with our American form of government; that it has not outlived its usefulness;
and that what it does need is an intelligent citizenry and a clean, honest and
impartial administration.
As future voters
and office holders, the youth of Nebraska should have an understanding of the
problems of elective officials, their duties and their function. The opportunity
to learn these fundamentals will be offered at Cornhusker Boys' State. It is
a laboratory of practical political science. The boys will have their own city,
county and state governments. They will elect their own officials, from Mayor
on up to Governor. They will have their legislature and city councils, where
they will present and argue their own bills; have their courts to interpret
the law, and in other ways live as self-governing citizens. Each boy will have
a chance to see for himself that government is just what he makes it.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to find this information. I know a homeschool group in the Omaha area was trying to put together a delegation, but I'm not sure how that works. Here is an email address for more info: alahq@legion-aux.org
