Aug. 11, 2008 - update
Well, I've sort of thrown out our schedule. Really and truly we're following it, but at a more relaxed pace. I've let the kids choose which order to complete their subjects. We've decided to do the subjects that are related to them both first, and then they move on to their individual studies. This does seem to go better. Today, however, we hit the math brick wall again. I had to call in reinforcements! My father-in-law came by the house on his way home from work. He sat down with DD and went over her mixed and improper fractions. She says that he helped her a lot - thank goodness! Of course we'll see tomorrow if she has retained his advice. DS on the other hand didn't have an opportunity to work one-on-one with his granddaddy. FIL just firmly told DS that he was going to have to "buckle down and memorize" his times tables. I just ordered Times Tales from TOS store. Maybe that will help. Do any of you have any experience with Times Tales? I probably should have asked BEFORE I bought it, but it was only $15, so I thought what the heck.

I am glad that your days are going smoother. I have not used Times Tales, but I have used a similar product where a story and goofy picture helps the child remember the hard facts. Yes, third and fourth graders have to memorize and drill those facts...and it's not usually a lot of fun:( Hopefully this will be motivating to your DS. And, it is great that your FIL was a big help to your DD. Sometimes just hearing it from someone different helps a lot. I'll be praying that you will have a lot of good days from now on.

I think it is wonderful that you are being flexible with the kid's schedule. I agree that combining certain subjects is a good idea. I have been trying this for years with my son who doesn't like writing.
Because he is in 6th grade this year, I am having him keep a small journal, but this is the first time we have done anything like that.
Praying that you will have a good week,
Pam

Sounds like you are making changes to make your days go smoother. Good for you!!!
On the times tables...I haven't tried Times Tables, but have heard good things about it. My oldest had a bit of trouble memorizing the facts. I used a book called 10 Days to Multilplication Mastery. We took a bit longer than 10 days, but it worked.
Hope you have a great day today!!!!
Blessings,
Laurie
