Dec. 19, 2009 - It's How Long Until Christmas?

I confess, I'm having a hard time getting geared up for this Christmas.  Several reasons - having completed our 2nd remodel in two years has set us back financially, we've been busy helping Mom get settled in her new house right behind ours, and we have a large lawsuit looming over our heads from my husband's consulting business.  All of this has also contributed to some very light schooling lately, and a lack of desire to update this blog.

But here it is, the 19th. My dd's birthday is today.  She's seven and so excited.  We took her to Build a Bear for her birthday, and while at the mall began our Christmas shopping.  Fortunately, our list of those to buy for isn't too long, so it shouldn't take long to complete.

With all the stuff going on, and working part-time, we are considering changing curriculum.  I love Weaver, but don't feel like I'm able to do it justice.  To do it the way I want to requires more prep time than I currently have.  Anyone want to offer their suggestions for a low-prep, Christ centered curriculum?  I have some ideas, but am always open to suggestions.

I hope your Christmas is filled with those things that bring you peace and joy!

Dec. 19, 2009 - The Christmas Putz, a Moravian or Victorian custom

No this is not the slang meaning of the word putz which can be quite a nasty term. I have just been introduced to this by a local Moravian church here in town. We went to a quaint carol sing led by trombones and trumpets and then had cookies and hot cider. Then they announced the presentation of the Christmas putz in the basement. I said "what!?" So we followed the crowd to the basement and saw a delightful diorama of the first Christmas with small figurines, lights and music. They created these scenes for children and others who could not read yet.

Then I googled and found this website. I will be reading more about this tradition as well. www.victoriana.com/christmas/putz.htm

Dec. 19, 2009 - Pennsylvania snow report

It's very beautiful out here! Very WHITE! The snow removal guys are very busy! I would love to stay home and bake but I have to drive a few blocks over to help my mother in law dig out. My place is taken care of because we are in an apartment complex.

DH made it to work 50 minutes away this morning. He did spin out and banged up the car a little but he is ok. Thank you Lord!

I consider this a white Christmas. I would rather it snow now and not actually on Christmas day when we need to travel.

Merry White Christmas!!!!

Dec. 18, 2009 - Winter storm warning!!

This is not a "watch" folks!! It's coming to SE Pennsylvania!! Batten down the hatches!!

I just get a kick out of the newscasters when we are about to get a snowstorm around here. They always show the people panicking and getting their snow shovels, blowers and salt. And do not forget the bread and milk!! Heaven forbid if we do not have milk or bread for a few days! And where's the shovels from last Winter? Did they break from digging out of the last snowfall?

Well, I am being sarcastic here but it is funny. And it's festive to feel stuck inside and see the snow falling. Unfortunatley DH has to go to work over the weekend. Say some prayers for him. Thanks.

Blessings to you and have a fun, festive, Merry Christmas weekend!

December 17, 2009 - Beware Wild Thing Bearing Scissors

Things have been crazy around here lately.  I'm in the middle of exams, and have very little spare time.  The Crafter wanted to try out a snowflake craft we found on-line.  I told her we would make them after Wild Thing and Princess Pink were in bed.

So the Crafter and I were happily cutting and taping, when we heard Princess Pink in the bathroom.  I asked the Crafter to make sure she was OK.  Then she called, "Mama, you have to see Princess Pink."

This is what I saw.

 Photobucket

My brother did this.

Apparently, Princess Pink asked Wild Thing to make her have cute little hair.  Now she has no bangs and  bald spots, and  what's left is choppy.  I'm going to carry her to see if there's a miracle working hair stylist who can make this not look so horrible.  We have to do something before the Christmas play and the arrival of grandma.

Dec. 17, 2009 - Dust mite update

We froze our stuffed bear and some others to see if any dust mites came off. They were inside bags and we did not see anything in them after the great freeze. So either they were clean already or it still wasn't cold enough I am not sure.

I at least feel better if that matters :]

Dec. 17, 2009 - Cinnamon ornaments

I love this simple ornament project. It smells soooo nice! It will be our weekend fun this weekend. I will try to post pictures on our family pics blog. Here is the recipe if you and your family and/or friends would like to make them.

Half cup cinnamon****Third cup apple sauce****One tablespoon glue. Just keep adding and mixing until your consistency is right for cutting and shaping with cookie cutters. I found that I had to sprinkle more cinnamon here and there so it would not stick to the cutters. Use a straw to make small holes for stringing them up. They will need to dry overnight and a day perhaps. You can bake them but I do not know the neccessary temps or length of time.

Please do not eat them!! :} Merry Christmas!

Saturday, December 12, 2009 - Book review- Big Truths for Young Hearts

Big Truths for Young Hearts
When this book, Big Truths for Young Hearts, by Bruce A. Ware, arrived from Crossway to review, I will admit I really didn't want to read it. I guess so many books on this subject exist and I didn't think I wanted to read yet another one.

Was I ever wrong! This book is captivating! I would say the projected ages is a bit low..6 to 14....I'd probably say more like 8-18....and beyond. I sure learned a few things while reading it and it's been quite a few years since I was 14!

The beginning of the book is what began my enjoyment of this book....there is a hearty recommendation from two who know the author best...his two daughters. They have personally received the words in this book directly from the author, their Daddy. I can think of no recommendation that would mean more!

The chapters are meaty and have much to chew on.

God's Word and God's Own Life as God
God as Three in One
Creator and Ruler of All
Our Human Nature and Our Sin
Who Jesus Is
The Work That Jesus Has Done
The Holy Spirit
Our Great Salvation
The Church of Jesus Christ
What Will Take Place In The End

I would suggest reading this book through yourself before using it as a guide to teaching your children. There are numerous references, Bible verses and other sources listed. Take the time to pull those references out and use them as well in teaching your children.

I heartily recommend this book. It has a permanent place on our family bookshelf!

Thanks to Amy at Crossway for the opportunity to review this book!

Dec. 15, 2009 - JERICHO: Season 2

STARS:

STORY LINE:
Jericho, picks-up were it left of in season 1, with season 2. The story left off with the people of Jericho fighting for their survival,
as they are about to be over-whelmed by a hosteling town, a new government appears out of Cheyenne Wyoming. A government with a new face - flying a new flag. Rated TV-14.

REVIEW:
I like this show, it's my favorite show! I don't like the fact that it got canceled. There is some cussing in it, but not as bad as the first season. You should ask your parents before watching the series. Overall, I love this show!

COMMENTS:
The 3rd season did not make it to TV, but it came out in a comic-book; but the comic book is like $25.
