We got a new horse yesterday. Another amazing God-incidence...I started my horse career in 4th grade. My parents presented me with a 23 yr. old quarter horse mare, for Christmas. It was so fun and amazing. I could catch her all by myself in this big field and lead her over to the fence and get on and if I fell off, she would stop and let me catch her. I had her for three or four years and gave her away to a little girl whose pony had reared up and flipped over backwards on her, in a ditch no less--broke both her arms and her collar bone. She was never going to ride a pony again, but she did great with my old horse and took her home. Great memories. A couple weeks ago a friend came by with her daughter for a little riding lesson on our pony and asked if I would be interested in a 23 yr. old quarter horse, for free. Of course I said yes! Long and short of it he has been someone's horse for 12 yrs and before that was a lesson horse for 6. Dead broke, no issues, kids grown up, divorce, horse needs a home. We went to see him and he was huge! Radiates friendliness and in the words of Bob Graham "good intentions". So after three tries of getting him on a trailer, he made it home last night. The big old thing put me through some personal growth. I am terrible at horse trailering. Been trained by a bad loader to be NERVOUS. Well, my friend with the trailer and the good experience has one pregnant wife, so there was no one to bring that big boy into the trailer, but me. And it's a slant load, so I had to stand in the little pointy front of the trailer and encourage him to come on in with me! No escape door--once I get him on, I tie him and then have to slide past the length of his body (dangerous end comes last--by that time he's figured out I'm skeedaddling!) and squeeze out the crack in the trailer door! Did it all. He was great. Hauled great. Our pony mare was SO excited. She was neighing and galloping before the truck was in park in the driveway! She loves him. His head is at least 2 ft. long. He has these elegant long black stockings on all four feet and doesn't look a day over 12! He seems happy to have company too. They keep chewing on each other's necks. It's late. Gotta go hay! |
