A New Chapter-Midwifery School

Mar. 26, 2007 - Starting Off...

I have wanted to be a midwife for a really long time now...definitely for the past six years. I knew it's what I wanted to do when I started nursing school. It has always seemed like a pipe dream, though, not really attainable. Schools are very expensive, and even the ones that are pretty fair require a deposit that was just too much for us to handle.

Recently, though, I was told about the Midwife-to-Be program and got soooo excited. This was basically an answer to my prayers!! So, I talked to DH about it, and I've got my registration fee sent off and am awaiting the registration pack. I haven't yet been able to find the books I need immediately, but I have gotten a few. Today I got the first two of the ones I've ordered: Prescription for Dietary Wellness, and Husband-Coached Childbirth. Kinda upset about having to buy that one because I used to have a copy of the Bradley Method but I'm just not sure where I stashed it. Well, can't hurt, right?

So far, I've gotten everything off of Amazon. I'm having to wait for the next paycheck before getting anything else, but that's coming up so I'm not too worried.

What I need ASAP:
Holistic Midwifery I by Anne Frye
Varney's Midwifery 4th ed.
Helping Hands Workbook by Carla Hartley
Practical Skills Guide

Maternal Newborn Nursing 7th ed.

Everything else for Phase I:
Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth - Kitzinger
Spiritual Midwifery -Ina May Gaskin
Heart And Hands - Elizabeth Davis (ordered)
Bradley Book - Husband Coached Childbirth or other
Special Delivery – Rahima Baldwin
Prescription for Dietary Wellness – Balch & Balch
Active Birth - Balaskas
Easing Labor Pains - Lieberman
Medical Terminology w/ Human Anatomy - Rice
Birthsong Workbook
Immaculate Deception 2 – Susanne Arms
A midwives Handbook – Sinclair
Physical Exam 6 Ed - Bates

Seems like a lot when written out.... Hmm..too bad my birthday isn't a little closer!!

Wow, that is a lot of books. I am thinking of becoming a midwife too, can you recommend any resources?

Mar. 26, 2007 - That's Great.

I am a midwifery student with the Association of Texas Midwives. I am finishing up my apprenticeship right now. I should be done by the end of the year. I love it.
If you are interested, I post about it occasionally on my blog.

Alycia, I really like to program I've signed up for, Midwife-to-Be. Mostly because it is very flexible, no worries about having to pay extra for an "extension" and also the financial aspects are easy for me to meet, whereas other courses I just couldn't come up with the upfront costs. The website is: http://www.newlifehomebirth.com/midwifetobe2.htm

Ancient Arts is another school that I've heard a lot of good about, and was thinking for a long time of going through.

Good luck!
