Subway (or any company for that matter) has a right to run any contest it wants, right?...well, apparently not.
If you missed the recent uproar at your local Subway restaurant you must not be an HSLDA member or get AFA alerts. Subway recently launched a contest asking children to write
how "Every Sandwich Tells a Story" (you can still see this unchanged on their site at: http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/kids/contest.aspx) After receiving the AFA alert I received on 5/27 I dutifully filled in the e-mail and sent it on it's way, as apparently did many of you. But then I started thinking and talking with my husband, he always has a way of twisting my brain up and making me think about stuff in a different way.
The contest excluded homeschoolers because the Grand Prize was $5,000.00 in sprots equipment for a SCHOOL...makes you ogo HMMMMMMMMMM, doesn't it?
So here are my questions, taking BOTH sides of the issue into view...
1. Is it really wrong for a company to exclude homeschoolers from contests where the prizes are geared towards improving public schools? THINK about that for a moment before you jump in and shout YES. There is no way the sponsors of this contest who are providing the $5000.00 in sports equipment are going to award it to a homeschooler. YES, I agree that in the event a homeschooler won the child could choose a school to give it to. But WHY in the WORLD would he or she want to?
2. Aren't we taking things a bit to the extreme and opening a Pandora's box for ourselves? I mean how many contests do HOMESCHOOL companies have that are not open to PUBLIC school children? Do we really want little Johnny or Suzie Q. Public Schooler to get fighting mad that they are excluded from OUR promotions and contests? HMMMMM??? I think not, so before we storm the gates, let's TAKE a breath and realize that not every exclusion of homeschoolers is a bad one.
