Friday, June 27, 2008 - Incompetent Homeschoolers?

Posted in Goings On

Browsing the Last 100 entries this am as a way to cool off from the Sharpie incident I came across a post that made my blood BOIL!  Over on the Company Porch blog they shared about an interview done recently on Fox News.  Let me tell you I am glad I missed this one...

The interview is between Laura Ingraham and an education "expert," Dr. William Bainbridge in regards to recent California issues.

The first thing he says is "I don't think that it 's that I don't support homeschooling.  I think a lot of it has to do with who the parents are and what's the age of the children.  Those are really the two big issues."

OK so you don't THINK you don't support homeschooling?  I have heard enough right there.  This guy can't even come out with a clear statement for his own beliefs.

He continues by saying he has met no one on planet earth who is qualified to teach all the courses in a secondary curriculum.

Um, I don't know any homeschooler who claims to be qualified to do that.  Has the dear doctor ever heard of CO-OP?  Community College?  Does he not know that we as homeschoolers NETWORK and SHARE our skills with one another??????

He continues with maybe you have a child who wants to specialize in Chemistry or Mathematics or Foreign Languages or whatever...

I know homeschooling families that give up cable TV, trips to Disney World or other extravagances to make sure their children can follow these passions, they just might also be blessed to have a neighbor, friend or fellow homeschooler with a DEGREE in those areas!

Later in his uninformed rant he hits below the belt by saying that anyone who is stranded in an underfunded under preforming school district should be SMART ENOUGH to get a JOB and WORK HARD enough to put their children in PRIVATE SCHOOLS!  This is the point I take the most offense at and think most of us will.  Homeschooling families make MANY sacrifices for our children's education.  Not the least of which is the careful planning and tailoring of each curriculum for each child.  Homeschool parents have been known to drag thier infants and toddlers along to harp lessons 50 miles from home, to swim meets across the country and even to Math Challenges in GASP public school competitions.

How Dr. Bainbridge do you explain the fact that several key ivy league colleges are SEEKING out homeschoolers?  That homeschoolers score higher on standardized tests than their public and PRIVATE schooled peers?  That as Miss Ingraham points out FIVE of the last ELEVEN Geography Bee winners have been homeschooled?

But of course I am just an uneducated (after all I have nothing but a High School Diploma) lazy (because I am not smart enough to work hard and get my children a PRIVATE school education) homeschooling, self employed MOTHER.  Who is challenging your degrees and institutions because I am turning out not one but FOUR well educated, grounded, exceptionally well rounded HOMESCHOOLED children who will one day be able to out debate "experts" like Dr. Bainbridge.
