November 9, 2009...

 Outside my window...
It a beautiful morning!  I'm greeted with sunlight reflecting off the snow on the mountaintops.  Seeing the sun can be such a rare treat this time of year.

I am thinking...
of tons of things I need to do in the house this week.

I am thankful for...
Sunlight and Chris  being back on day shift this week.

 From the learning rooms...
We are reading (or listening to CD's which is a nice break for me) to Johnny Tremain.  We are learning about the early colonial period before the American Revolution.  Rachel and David are busy with piano, math, reading (although they have finished all of the Sonlight readers) and Aaron is busy on his workbooks.  We are also learning about birds in Science.

 From the kitchen...
Homemade Hamburger Helper, I have not decided which kind.

I am wearing...
PJ's

I am going...
to stay home today.  Chris is off work, but needs to be working on his class.  We will be going to a Boy Scout Event tonight.

I am creating...
??
I am reading...
We are finishing up the Narnia books this week.   I have tons of books on my night stand, but I have not touched them in awhile.  I have been enjoying reading the Narnia books and some magazines (This Old School House and Answers in Genesis.)

 I am hoping...
the sun says around for awhile so that we can enjoy it today.

I am hearing...

the sounds of the keyboard when the kids have headphones plugged in.  I need to listen to them play today.  I love the headphones!  They can practice without disturbing anyone---like while the others are doing other schoolwork, but I don't always hear the progress they are making.

 One of my favorite things...

are winter mornings.  I love watching the fire in our pellet stove and snuggling up on the couch a blanket and a book.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Boy Scout Court of Honor tonight, Piano Lessons and any errands I have on Tuesday and not sure about the rest of the week.

 Outside my window...
clouds and lots of them.  I cannot even see Thunder Mountain or the Mendenhall Glacier.   Just like in life though, I know they are there even if I don't see them at the moment.

I am thinking...
so many things.   " His anxious thoughts said: "Terrific powers are set in array against me!"  His Father said: "And you are as a little child, who knows not how to meet them But with you , there is one stronger than they  Do not forget to sing!" I Come Quietly to Meet You --Amy Carmichael

I am thankful for...
a new day.

 From the learning rooms...
Still trying to get back in a normal routine after taking off lots of vacation time this summer.  We did not stop, but got used to working a week or two and then taking a few weeks off.  Chris does have a week and half off in September and looking forward to time off then.  We are starting Week 6 in Sonlight.

 From the kitchen...
I have hamburger out, now what to do with it?

I am wearing...
A long sleeve blue shirt and jeans and white socks.

I am going...
With the truck in the shop and nothing I had to do, I did not take Chris to work today.  We may be going to the gym when he gets off or on a hike and David has scouts tonight.

I am creating...
??

I am reading...
Many InFallible Proofs Evidences of the Christian Faith by Henry M. Morris

 I am hoping...

for a good week.

I am hearing...

the squeaking of the couch when David moves and bathroom door closing.  It is still pretty quiet around here at 8:15.  I need to go back and remind Rachel and Aaron that it is time to get up and get ready for school.

 One of my favorite things...
A cup of coffee in the morning

A few plans for the rest of the week:
just trying to get in a school routing.  I also will need to go the grocery store this week and Aaron has his kickoff party of Tiger Scouts.  He is growing up too fast!

 Outside my window...
There are some clouds, but the sun is peaking though.  I can hear the ravens outside and see the beautiful blue of the glacier.

I am thinking...
I need to wake up and get going this morning.  We are starting back to school after a few weeks off and I've got lots of laundry to do from our trip.

I am thankful for...
to have my Mom help with the laundry today.

 From the learning rooms...
I think we will be on Week 5 of Sonlight.

 From the kitchen...
I have no idea!  I need to make a grocery list and go the store this afternoon.

I am wearing...
PJ's

I am going...
to the Cosco, Walmart and maybe Fred Meyer.

I am creating...
I need to start planning falls coop.

I am reading...
??It is time to start a new book and I'm not sure unless it is the Real George Washington which has not been getting much attention lately.

 I am hoping...
school goes well today.  First days back after a break can be a bit rocky.

I am hearing...

the sounds of the kids making breakfast and the coffee pot.

 One of my favorite things...

reading a good book.

A few plans for the rest of the week:

School and getting back into our regular schedule.

 Outside my window...
it is rainy and  there are low clouds.  The clouds are pretty up against Thunder Mountain.  I love watching them move along the mountains and it is should be blowing out and get some sun and warm temps later today or tomorrow.

I am thinking...
I'm wondering if David  being away will though off the family dynamics as much as Rachel being gone.  The boys were lost without her when she was at camp.

I am thankful for...
to live in such a beautiful place.

 From the learning rooms...
We are off while David is at camp.

 From the kitchen...
I have no idea!  I think I might make a meatloaf later?

I am wearing...
Jeans and green t-shirt

I am going...
just got back from dropping off David.  He is on his way out to Echo Ranch Bible Camp.

I am creating...
looking at what I plan to teach in coop this fall.

I am reading...
Teddy's button.

 I am hoping...
David has already made a friend.  He was excited but nervous about going to camp.

I am hearing...

Aaron talking to himself as he feeds the dogs.

 One of my favorite things...
watching the clouds.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Making reservations for trip to Skagway next week.

Friday, July 24, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
Summer is passing so quickly!  I've really started to notice the days getting shorter which is always a good sign that summer will be wrapping up before we know it.  It does look like we will have another amazing warm dry few days coming.  This has been an amazing summer.  We have had a week of cool rainy weather.  It was a welcome relief that allowed us all to rest and work on stuff in the house.  We will finish up week 4 in Sonlight this week.

On the HomeFront:
The projects on the house have been completed.  I can really tell the difference this week with the cooler weather.  Our furance has not needed to run as much.  (attic and crawlspace insulation and some odds and ends, repairs)  It is great to have my house back and not have to work around another person's schedule.

In the Schoolroom:
We spent the week doing school  and we should not have waited so long.  It was hard getting the kids back in the swing of things on Monday, but the rest of the week went well.  I try to not take off more than 3 or 4 weeks at a time, but the weather has just been so amazing! We will start our study of Alaska History today. I plan to try and work on it on Fridays.

In the Literary Scene:
I need to get back to reading The Real George Washington.   I'm only about 1/4 of the way thought it.  I got totally sidetracked with The Hidden Hand.  It was one of my favorites.   I love Lamplighter books!  I'm now working on Teddy's Button.

From the Garden:
My lettuce is huge!  We need to eat more salad.  I found several slugs this week too.  I have not been keeping up on that, but otherwise all is well.

Just for Fun
:
We picked blueberries last week.  I'm planning to make blueberry syrup today and freeze the rest for muffins.

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
I've spent a lot of time thinking about Prayer this week.  Everything I'm reading for Bible study and life in general keeps bringing me back to it.  Prayer does not have the focus in my life it should and sometimes I wonder how much of what I'm struggling  with all goes back to that one subject.  There is lots on my mind and heart today and just looking for some guidance from the Lord.

On the HomeFront:

The plan was to start our insulation work, but the insulation wasn't on on the boat, so looks like it will be starting next week.  I've been busy today getting Rachel's stuff ready to go to camp.  This will be the first time she has stayed away more than one night expect at my Mom's a couple of times.  Knowing Rachel, it will be harder on her Mom than it will be on her.  She is so excited!
In the Schoolroom:
We are on a three week break.

In the Literary Scene:
I'm still working on The Real George Washington, but I have enjoyed reading The Wide Wide World so much than I do not think I have read much on anything else.

From the Garden:
I need to pick some of my lettuce today or tomorrow.  It is growing like crazy!  My flowers are doing well.  I think this has been the easiest place I have ever lived to garden as long as you do some prep work and find out what grows well here.  I wish I could have some tomatoes, but we are not warm enough to grow them out of a greenhouse.

Just for Fun
:
The kids are having a great time outside with sidewalk chalk.

June 22, 2009...

 Outside my window...
There are lots of clouds near the top of the Thunder Mountain and the other mountains that are close.  We can't the pretty white capped ones today, but I can the pretty blue ice of Mendenhall Glacier.  We had 18 hours and 18 minutes of daylight yesterday and the first day after the soltice we only lost one second.  We will start losing daylight now.  The summer is passing too quickly!

I am thinking...
of dear friends in Wasilla today.  Life is so full of both change and struggles.

I am thankful for...
my garden and all the fun it is and to be able to better insulate the house before this winter.

 From the learning rooms...
We have just finished our first two week of school for the new year.  We are now taking three weeks off.

 From the kitchen...
Teriyaki chicken and salad

I am wearing...
Jeans and long sleeve purple shirt with slippers

I am going...
to be staying home a lot this week.  We have a contractor working in the house.  We are trying to make our home more energy efficient.  They will be doing some prep work today and start putting insulation in the attic on Wednesday.  I'm not sure how long that will take or when they will start insulation work in the crawl space.

I am creating...
a better chore plan and working on my garden and flowers.

I am reading...
I am still reading The Real George Washington, but it has been crowded out by The Wide Wide World.  I am really enjoying this book.

 I am hoping...
to get to go hiking some time this week or try out my new bike.  We have a "trailer" for Aaron.  It makes the adult bike almost like a bike for two except that is comes off.  He will be able to sit on a sit and help peddle.

I am hearing...

the kids voices and the music my washer plays when it is finished.  Guess I need to go check that.

 One of my favorite things...
Hiking in Juneau.  There are more trails than roads and their is so many new places to explore.  It will take years to check out all the trails I want to take.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
The contractors are setting my schedule this week.  I will need to be here when they can work and and work around what they are doing.

Saturday, June 13, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
We have been so blessed this summer.  We have enjoyed far more sunny warm days than a typical summer.  The funny thing is I never would have thought that I would miss the rain.  We have had a few rainy days and listening to the rain on the roof and watching the clouds move up and down the mountains has been enjoyable.  I  worried when we moved to Juneau that the rain would get to me and don't get me wrong sometimes I have longed for the sun, but I have been amazed to find the joy and beauty in the dreary days.  It also makes those sunny day so much brighter and  much more appreciated.  I don't take them for granted like I used to.

On the HomeFront:
We have been working on Chores the last two weeks.  I have changed up how we were handling this and it seems to be working much better.  I have simplified my approach and instead of rotating some chores, (for example feeding the dog---David morning, Rachel evening and Aaron next morning) one child is responsible for certain things (Aaron feeds the dogs.)  Chris and I also discussed an allowance that if they do their chore independently without Mom nagging and reminding them they will get their allowance.   I agreed to be pretty lenient on that the first week or two, but after that they can lose their allowance. They each have a chart with a wipe off marker for the week.  I need to update them in a week or so as it is still a work in progress.   So far it seems to be working especially for Rachel. What a change!

In the Schoolroom:
We are taking it slow this summer, but we did get started on Core 3, Core 3 readers and Core 3 LA.  Looks like it will be a fun year.  We also started God's design for Life Plants.  I have picked up several books to take out on our hikes, as we continue to learn about the plants native to SE Alaska.

In the Literary Scene:
As usual I have several books started, but have not been reading as much this time of year.  I did read The Strength of Mercy last night.   Chris has been working in the evening this week, so I have been reading in the evening after the kids go to bed.  I am still working on The Cross Triumphant (almost finished that one) and The Real George Washington (a long book and reading it pretty slowly.)

From the Garden:

I cannot believe how well my flower and veggies are doing!  I really thinking I'm going to enjoy gardening here in SE Alaska.

Just for Fun
:
We have enjoyed taking some great short hikes this last two weeks.  Except for the bug bites the Boy Scout trail was beautiful!  We saw lots of wildflowers and a long stretch of sandy/rocky beach.  I still need to upload those photos.  We also had a great time watching Chris take off in a float plane for a work trip.  He had a great time!

Original Home of The Simple Woman\
June 3, 2009...

 Outside my window...
It is another beautiful day and it is supposed to be this way all week.  We were up in the mid-70's.  (Maybe that is why I'm two days late.)  It may even make it up to the 80's and break record temps this week.  So I will keep this short and to the point, I need to get outside.

I am thinking...
This has been an amazing summer!  Everyone says so, and wonder how long this sunny weather will last.  May is the driest month, so it could end at anytime.  Gotta enjoy the sun while it shines.

I am thankful for...
home!  I've been enjoying working on my plants and little things around the house with plans for the future.  We have always known that we would not be in a house for long, and now that is not certain.  I know Rachel really wants to stay here.  She still wanted to go back to Palmer until the summer.  This beautiful summer weather has totally won her over.

 From the learning rooms...
We are on school break.  We finished up animal science last week.

 From the kitchen...
Vegetable soup unless I pick up something quick when I go the grocery store.  That is sounding really tempting.

I am wearing...
PJ's

I am going...
Grocery shopping and them who know!

I am creating...
flower beds and vegetable garden.  There are all doing well.  I'm just working trying to figure out what is eating the lettuce leaves.  Sounds like from the advice I got from a local greenhouse it is slugs, but I do know I have spider mites.  So I'm following so advice for those and aphids as well.  We will have to see how well it works.

I am reading...
Again not reading a lot these days, but I am still working on The Real George Washington and The Cross Triumphant.

 I am hoping...
Our new chore charts helps with the arguing about who does what.

I am hearing...

the sounds of the boys talking and a toy from McDonalds.

 One of my favorite things...
is on sunny days I can see all the mountians!  It is so pretty out my Living Room window.  I can see the blue of the glacier and mountians all around.  Some close with trees almost all the way up and  very little snow left near the top.  They are so green.  Others that where the trees stop about halfway up the mountain and lots of snow and jagged greyish blue rocks.  I love all the contrast.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
I'm heading to Costco, the Bike store, and another grocery store (Fred's or Supper Bear.)  I have some more errands, but I may wait for another day.  I'll be working on the chore charts this week and trying to get habits in place.  We plan to go out the hike near the airport tomorrow.  Chris will be taking a float plane with work and we want to see if we can see him take off.

Saturday, May 30, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
We are looking forward to my Mom's visit in a little over a month.  She is getting excited too I think.  I'm go glad she will be able to come and spend three months with us.

On the HomeFront:
It has been a pretty wet cool couple of days.  What a perfect day to download some photos.  For my facebook friends I downloaded all the photos that I have been too busy enjoying the sun to download.  We also spent the day yesterday organizing our books for the next school year.  I need a few more days to work in our school room, but looks like we could have on amazing week next week.  Possible record breaking temps, so I'm guessing that will wait.

In the Schoolroom:
We are on break expect that we are still working on Animal Science.  We will finish up next week.

In the Literary Scene:
I'm still reading The Real George Washington and Titus Comrade of the Cross.

From the Garden:
The garden is going well.  The berries and Rubarb out back are doing well too.  God has been watering the plants this week, so we have not had much to do.  I had almost given up on the carrot and green onion seed, but I saw some two sprouts, so they may come up after all.

Just for fun
:
I love to watch the clouds move along the mountains.

 Outside my window...
the glacier looks so blue today.  It is cloudy, but they are not low and it is not raining.  There is a chance of rain everyday this week, I think.  So we are back to normal.

I am thinking...
that we should all go on a trip out the road today.  Chris wants to get some more rocks for our flower bed anyway.

I am thankful for...
sunny warm days!

 From the learning rooms...
We are on school break.  We will continue to work on our Science book.  We are studying ocean creatures so more time spent on the beach is planned.

 From the kitchen...
Steak and Pork Chops set out to grill this afternoon.  I have not decided what to have with it yet.  Sandwiches for lunch.

I am wearing...
PJ's

I am going...
I'm not sure.  We will just play it by ear this week.  I do think we will do some field trips, but will wait and see what we are in the mood for each day.

I am creating...

I am reading...
Again not reading a lot these days, but I am still working on The Real George Washington.

that we have some sunny days when Mom comes up in a little over a month.

I am hearing...

the hum of the Frig.  Chris and the kids are enjoying sleeping in this morning.  I'm enjoying the peace and quiet with my morning coffee.

One of my favorite things...

Sunday, May 24, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
I'm a little tired today.  We have enjoyed such a beautiful May!  Sunshine can be rare and the summers are short here in Southeast Alaska.  So when the sun shines you run full speed.  As grateful as I am for this lovely weather, I will enjoy the rain that is coming this week as a chance to slow down.  I have to admit I have missed the cloudy/rainy days a little.
On the Homefront:
Chris has a few days off before going to day shifts for the next two weeks.  We are looking forward to that.
In the Schoolroom:
We have finished up Sonlight Core 2!  We are still working on our study of animals.  We are studying Mollusks.  We went to the beach at low tide on Saturday to look for sea life and shells.  We will  continue our study of animals for at least two more weeks and we will go on to plants.  Except for starting a read aloud, we will be taking a break from the rest of our school work and enjoying some time for field trips and work in our garden until mid July.
In the Literary Scene:
I am still working on The Real George Washington although very slowly.
From the Garden:
My plants are doing well for the most part.  The seeds have not come up and I'm going to give them a few more days.  If they don't come up this week, I may think about putting something else there.  My strawberries in the pot and raised bed are doing well, but the ones in hanging baskets are not.  I'm not sure what is going on.  Everything else is going OK.  My lettuce, cucumbers cabbage and herbs look good.   I have all the berry bushes and a rubarb plant put in out back and my flowers and starts from Mara are all in the ground, pots or raised beds.   I hope to have pictures in a week or two.
Just for Fun:
We had so much fun walking on the beach this week exploring all the life that is there.  We are looking forward to going back several more time this week.

 Outside my window...
It is a beautiful  sunny day.

I am thinking...
not much.  I'm tired from working in the yard all afternoon and with sunset being about  9:30PM, but light on the horizon until 10:30.   I lose track of time.  I love it though.  It has been such a wonderful May!

I am thankful for...
Sunshine and warm weather!  May is one of the driest months we have, so we are soaking in as much sun and we can.

 From the learning rooms...
We hope to wrap up Sonlight Core 2 this week or maybe next week.   David finished up his Math today and he will be working on his Grammer the rest of the week.  Rachel will not finish Math this week, but finish it up when we start back with Sonlight in mid July.   So she will work on Math the rest of the week.  We will be working on Science on the break, enjoy some field trips and taking some hikes while learning about local plant life.  We will also be working in our garden

 From the kitchen...
We are smoking fresh salmon on the grill, thanks to our neighbor.  I'm not sure what we will have have with it.

I am wearing...
Very dirty jeans and black long sleeve shirt.

I am going...
I picked up some stuff for science today and I'm thinking of going somewhere tomorrow.  It sounds like we may have another sunny day.  I'm not sure what----drive out the road, walk on the beach or out to the glacier??  We might even drive over on the North side of Douglas Islands or go walk on the flats near the airport.  Oh all the choices, I'll just see what mood we are in tomorrow.

I am creating...
a vegtable garden and flower area out front.

I am reading...
not a great deal at the moment.  We are reading And the Word Came With Power and Catching Their Talk in a Box in school.  I am still working on The Real George Washington although I'm not making much progress on it.  I'm so tired by the time I get to bed  that I'm not reading very much.

 I am hoping...
that my vegetables do well.

I am hearing...

silence!  The kids are outside.

One of my favorite things...
sunny days in Juneau!  I have never seen a prettier place that Juneau on a sunny day.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
finish up school.

A few photos I would like to share
Aaron wanted us to get a picture of him jumping off the big log.

I'll try and get some photos of the flower/veggies and stuff next week.

Sunday, May 17, 2009 - Weekly Wrap-up

From the Heart:
I've been rejoicing in the wonder of Spring/Summer.  Watching the trees and bushes bud and new leaves come out.  Planting spring flowers and finding Rasberry bushes that come up as shoots from my neighbors bushes.  I've looking forward to hikes, walks on the beach. fresh fish, berries and vegetables from my garden.  I love winter, really I do or I would not love Alaska so much, but I also love the promise of spring and summer days.
On the Homefront:
I'm not sure what happened to my spring cleaning plans.  Well that is not true.   I know exactly what happened----I'm taking the day off for weather.  Now for you who do not live in Juneau I'll translate.  It is way to pretty outside, so I'm taking the day off.  We have enjoyed quite a few sunny days for the Alaskan Rainforest.    It is hard to want to be inside when I can be outside and working on my gardening project.  Our world is coming to life and we are getting so excited about our first Juneau summer.
In the Schoolroom:
We are close to finishing up Sonlight Core 2.  David is finishing up Math and working on Grammer.  Rachel is still working on Math.  We are  studying animals and should be finishing that up this month.  We are spending lots of time outside working in the yard and just enjoying the warmer weather.
In the Literary Scene:
I've been distracted by all the warm weather and have not read much this week, but that is what winter is for, right.   I am still working on The Real George Washington.  I'm reading aloud to the kids And the Word came with Power.
From the Garden:
The whole family has been busy outside this week.  We have made two raised beds and have quite a few pots ready to plant.  We also have some berry bushes to plant.  Up to this point most of it has been prep work ( for the veggies and such.)  I also have flowers out front in pots and Chris is almost finished with our new border with leftover stone from the veggie beds.
Just for Fun:
Most of our fun has been going to all the local greenhouses and picking our plants.  Are you seeing a pattern here?  I can have a one track mind.

May 4, 2009...

 Outside my window...
It is rainy and cloudy today.  After almost a week of sun, my house needs me to stay inside.  It was beautiful and warm and we were able to start working in yard, storage building, and have a garage sell last week.  As well and go on some walks and explore the beach.  It was wonderful and we enjoyed every second!  Today I'm looking forward to a day inside.

I am thinking...
of what I need to work on today.  I'm wanting to get a little spring cleaning done.  I started it last week and gave up quickly.  Chris was sharing with me that a race was canceled for weather last week and it took awhile to figure that out.  It was canceled because the weather was too beautiful.  I guess that is what happened to my spring cleaning plans last week.

I am thankful for...
last week.  Juneau is the most beautiful place I have been in the sun.  We also had a wonderful trip last month and enjoyed spending time with friends.

 From the learning rooms...
We are working on finishing up this school year.  Most of our books for next year have arrived.

 From the kitchen...
cube steak with onion gravy and mashed potatoes and carrots ??

I am wearing...
my PJ's.

I am going...
to stay home today.

I am reading...
Kildee House to the kids.  I'm reading so many different books right now.  The Real George Washington, Passionate Housewives Desperate for God and Calm my Anxious Heart are some of the ones I'm working on.

 I am hoping...
that Juneau starts to feel like home soon.  I think I left part of myself in the Mat-Su and I realized that when I went back.

I am hearing...

Aaron rocking.

One of my favorite things...
walking on the beach.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
to work on school and clean the house.  I need to go to the grocery store and I would like to take a walk on the beach.  I also want to download some photos from our trip and the week of sun.

A few photos I would like to share
