 Outside my window...
The sun is showing its face today and we have a thin layer of snow on the ground.

I am thinking...
I am crazy to try and paint this week.  I have been having a argument with myself for the last month that I need to wait until after the holidays, but some of the colors in house are just driving me nuts.

I am thankful for...
The sunshine is so beautiful this morning.  I almost forget about it as we go many days without even seeing it stick its head out for even a few minutes, but then we have our moment in the sun.   I also thankful for the little bit of snow.   Not only does it feel more like Christmas, but it makes it brighter as well.

 From the learning rooms...
I'm planning to finish up the work from last week.  (We had school on Monday though Wednesday.)  The last part of the week I want to do some projects around the house.  The kids  will be doing Rosetta Stone  and read their reading books everyday and we have some books from the library we want to read together.   They will also be helping me take measurements of the rooms we will be painting and figuring out how much paint to use.  David will be getting to use some of his Math skills.

 From the kitchen...
I have set out hamburger to make Nachos for dinner.

I am wearing...
blue knit pants and a red Christmas sweatshirt.

I am going...
I will need to go shopping for paint and supplies later this week and go grocery shopping.  We have tickets for the Nutcracker on Saturday.

I am reading...
Stick to the Raft and we should be finishing up Robin Hood today or tomorrow.  I also started reading I Come Quietly to Meet you.

 I am hoping...

the snow is hear to stay (for the winter) this time.

I am hearing...

sounds of Rachel and Aaron talking and the sound of the laptop keyboard.  David is checking the weather and earthquakes.  He does this every morning.

 One of my favorite things...
Most evening we have been enjoying a fire in our wood stove.  I love sitting by the fire and drinking a cup of cider, cocoa or herbal tea.

A few plans for the rest of the week:

I need to get the Christmas storage boxes out to the storage building and I need to look at the painting stuff that is out there to determine what I need.

A few pictures I'd like to share
Kids have fun decorating a ginger bread house

Bible
:

We will be reading the gospels for quite a few weeks.  We are reading in Luke, John and Matthew this week.  We are also enjoying The Awesome Book of Bible Facts and Sing the Word: God our Provider.

History/Geography:

We are reading in Child's History of the World and Window on the World.  We are learning about Medival times.  The kids are enjoying learning about castles and knights.  We also are using Geography Songs.  We are learning about New Zealand.

Language Arts:

David and Rachel  work on two pages of Explore the Code.  They also do one lesson in Spelling Power.  All three do one lesson from A Reason for Writing.  David is working on one page in Simply Grammer each day.  We have just started back on English from the Roots up.

Read Aloud:
We read at least three short stories from The Aesop for Children and two or three short poems form A Child's Garden of Verses.  We will finish up Tales of Robin Hood this week or early next week.

Mathematics:
Each of the kids do one page of math every day.  We use Math U See.  Aaron is Primer, Rachel is Beta and David Delta.

Science:
Science is one subject that was hard to do while we were moving or in Barrow, so it took a back seat for the last year.  So we are focusing more time on it this year.  We are working on God's Design for Life-The Human Body.  The goal is to do 4-5 lessons a week.  ( I usually do this three days a week.)   We are learning about the Muscular System this week.

 Art:

This is another area that we have not worked on much in the last year.  I plan to start Artist Pursuits next week.

 Foreign Language:

David and Rachel worked on Max and Max Spanish for the last year and a half.  We just started Rosetta Stone Spanish.  Rachel and David did a short lesson today and are very excited about this new program.

 Physical Education

The goal is for all of us to start going to the gym three times a week again.  We stopped when we moved in our house last month.  Hope to start back next week.

Home Economics:

All the kids helped me make an Apple Pie on Monday and plan to help with some cooking tomorrow.

 Outside my window...
It is dark out.  It is after 5:30PM and it has been dark for at least two hours.  It has been a messy day.  Changing back and forth from rain to snow and back again.  We are hoping it will change to snow soon and stay that way!!

I am thinking...
I would like to start Weekly Homeschool Reports.  I really enjoy reading it on a friend's blog each week.  I  think that the first time I write my daybook  entry it is usually has more info.  I lost the first time today and I'm writing it again from memory.

I am thankful for...
that the coop went so well last week.  The kids had a great time.  We were there for a little over two hours.  We did crafts, storytime, games, had some time to just play and visit and ate a sack lunch together.  We will usually meet two times a month (only once in December) and we are all looking forward to the Christmas party next month!  It is so nice to have some homeschool friends.

 From the learning rooms...
I picked up Art Supplies today and plan to start Artist Pursuits this week or next.  It seems like when things get busy the "fun stuff" is the first to go.   We are studying the muscular system this week and learning about New Zealand.  I have always wanted to go there!

 From the kitchen...
I made Mexican Rice Casserole
for lunch.  Chris is working 3PM to 11PM this week, so lunch was the bigger meal.  We are just eating leftovers tonight.  This recipe from Crystal's Blog
and lots of other helpful info.

I am wearing...
Jeans and a long sleeve navy blue shirt.  This has to be the most boring part---as I always wear about the same thing.

I am going...
to the library tomorrow and maybe get the boys hair cut.  Otherwise I'm planning to stay home and do a little baking for Thanksgiving.

I am reading...
Robin Hood to the kids and Stick to the Raft to myself.

 I am hoping...
to get Rosetta Stone up and working soon.  The kids will be working on Spanish.  They studied Spanish with Max and Max Spanish last year.  They loved it.  It was an easy way to introduce a language and now we want to get a little more serious about it.

 I am hearing...
the sound of wood burning in the stove and the sound of rain and wind blowing outside.

 One of my favorite things...
having a cup of hot cider or herbal tea in front of the fire on a snowy night.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
I plan to start making pies tomorrow and bread and other things I can make ahead of time on Wednesday.  We are planning to have a quiet day at home on Thanksgiving.  We will have a potluck at church this Sunday.

Cox's Thanksgiving Menu
Turkey
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Gravy
Rolls
Green Bean Casserole
Another veggie??
Baked Yams
Cranberry Sauce
Blackberry Pie
Chocolate Pie
Pumpkin Pie

Monday
November 17, 2008...

 Outside my window...
Everything outside is white with frost.  The bright sunshine from yesterday is gone and replaced with a thick layer of clouds.  All we need is a little snow to make it look like a winter wonderland.

I am thinking...
That I will make bread today.

I am thankful for...
That Chris will not be working on Thanksgiving.   We were so busy preparing for a move last year, the movers came the week after Thanksgiving, so we had a very simple meal with few things made from scratch.  It just isn't the same and I'm thankful to have the time to prepare a nice meal and enjoy it together.  It is hard to believe that it was only a year ago that Chris got out of the Air Force (Nov 30) and we were preparing to leave for Alaska.  This has been such a busy and exciting year!!  I'm thankful for a slower paced life.  I am also thankful that the house had a frig that is now my extra frig because our freezer is not working.  It was 13 years old and has been moved many times so it was not a surprise, but I had hoped it would hang on a little longer.  I'm not sure when we will be able to replace it, so I'm even more thankful for the frig.

 From the learning rooms...
Rachel is learning to carry in addition.  I love the way Math U See teaches this.  We are talking about knights and castles in school.  In science we will be talking about the Skeletal System.  The kids will be helping make bread today.

 From the kitchen...
I have beans cooking in the Crock-Pot for Bean and Bacon soup tonight.  I am planning to have bread or rolls with it.   I plan to make bread today and have cinnamon rolls to make for breakfast tomorrow.

I am wearing...
Jeans and a green sweatshirt

I am going...
to be going to a homeschool coop this week.  We are excited to meet other homeschoolers.

I am reading...
And the Shofar Blew and our school read aloud this week is Castle Diary.

 I am hoping...
to finish up organizing the food and  kitchen stuff.  I worked on the garage storage area last week, but I need to work in the kitchen and dinning room this week.

 I am hearing...
Rachel, Aaron and David's voices in the kitchen.  They have their own make believe reality where their stuffed animals are helping them make lunch.   It can be pretty funny sometimes.  I hear sounds of pans and stuff banging around as David makes grilled cheese and Rachel is making the tomato soup.

 Around the house...
We will finish up science after lunch and pick up the house before making bread, IF all goes according to my plan.

 One of my favorite things...
I love it when the house smells like fresh baked bread!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
exactly what I have said the last two weeks, work on the kitchen stuff and food storage.  I worked on it last week, but did not get as much done as I hoped.  I also need to wash clothes,  I know I will not get it done today, but hope to tomorrow.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...
l'll think about that and maybe add on later this week.

I was wishing it was Monday, so I could do this and thought why wait for Monday!!
Outside my Window...

It was a cloudy dreary day today.  It is 3PM and it is starting to get dark out.  I'm not sure what time the sun sets today, but the days are getting shorter!! That means that Chrismas is on its way.  It has been raining all day and is cooler.  We had a little snow yesterday, but it is all liquid today or as we say in Juneau we are having liquid sunshine.

 From the learning rooms...

We have been making steady progress this week.  We are studying the human body and the kids are looking forward to this study.

I am hearing...

the sounds of children's voices, but Aaron's more than the other two.  They are back in our "school room" playing.

I am thankful for...

I have said it before, but my home.  As I listen to the rain falling on my roof, I'm thankful to be safe and dry and warm.  It is amazing all the little things you take for granted until you don't have them for awhile.  Things like my furniture and a bedroom that you can walk upright in (I could not in Barrow.)  Sometimes just being able to run to Wal-Mart or a mall even a small one to pick up stuff up.  I went to Jo Ann's yesterday when I needed some stuff for school.  I am becoming more and more grateful for how God has used the last year and half to make me thankful for all the little things.  I also talked with two friends using IM today.   One is in Japan and the other in Arkansas.  Some times technology is pretty cool.

 From the kitchen...

Chicken and Potato Chowder in the crock pot.

I am wearing...

Blue jeans and a light green long sleeve shirt.

I am reading aloud with the kids...

 Castle Diary

One of my favorite things...
I love my crock pot.  I have dinner ready and I don't have anything I need to do!  YEA!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...

We are having a friend over from dinner.  She goes to the church we attended in Wasilla and she is here with work.  I have lots I need to do.  I'm not sure what I will get to this week though beside school.

Outside my Window...
We had two sunny days this weekend!!  Today is cloudy, but not raining.  I'm looking out at the mountain and glacier and the glacier is so blue today!

 From the learning rooms...
We are starting a study of the body this week.  The kids are really excited about it.  We are also talking about knights, castles and such.
I am hearing
The weird sounds that Aaron makes.  The kids steps as they walk and the water running in the bathroom.

I am thankful for...

Chris and I had a date night this weekend.  We don't usually do that except when my Mom is out for a visit.  I am so thankful for friends that are interested in trading baby sitting!  I am so thankful for my husband.  I take him for granted far too often.

 From the kitchen...
We are having steak (from the grill,) baked potato and a salad.

I am wearing...
Blue jeans and a dark blue long sleeve shirt.

I am reading aloud with the kids...
 Castle Diary

One of my favorite things...
I love looking out my living room window.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
I want to work on the school room and the garage.  I need to organize my pantry area out there.  I did not get much done last week.

Here are a few pictures I thought I would like to share with you...

Outside my Window...
The sun did peak out this morning and I don't think it rained today.  It is after 4PM and it is getting dark out.  I can see some low clouds and the faint outline of the mountains.

 From the learning rooms...
It was our first day back at school, but we all felt a little under the weather.  So we had a light day.  The kids worked on Math, Handwriting and Spelling.  We had Bible time and we read several chapters of Bruchko.
I am thankful for...
Chris anchored the book shelves to the wall today, so that I can start getting all the books off the table in the school room.  I don't have to take all the kids with me when I go vote tomorrow.  That Chris is home and I hear him bumping around the house working on stuff.  Fruit and vegetables that have taste.  (They spoil quickly and have no taste in Barrow.)  I have an extra Frig.  There was an older one with the house and I have one from Palmer.  So I have an extra Frig in the garage.

 From the kitchen...
We will be having Nachos tonight.  I need to go work on that soon.

I am wearing...
Black knit pants and a green long sleeve shirt.

I am reading aloud with the kids...
 Bruchko by Bruce Olson

I am creating...
Not much.  I'm so ready to start decorating for Christmas though.
I am hearing...
Aaron laughing and crashing his hot wheels into something.  It is pretty quiet right now.  I love having the school room on the other end of the house and all the kids are playing there right now.

One of my favorite things...
We took a ride "out the road" last week and we took a walk on the beach.  It was so beautiful and the kids had fun looking for seashells.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
I want to work on the school room and the garage.  I need to organize my pantry area out there.

Thursday, October 30, 2008 - Beautiful day

It was a beautiful day. Chris took some great photos on our trip "out the road" that I will share next week. I wanted to share some photos taken from our yard though. I tried to show the view from my living room window, but it did not turn out great and the photo was a little dark. It is a beautiful sunny day and the pictures turned out better. The blue ice you see at the bottom of the mountain is Mendenhall Glacier.

Outside my Window...
In the dim morning light I can see the mountains and Mendenhall glacier. What a view to wake up to everyday!! The days are getting shorter and this reminds me that in Barrow there is almost no daylight at the point and I'm grateful for daylight. It is cloudy, but not raining or snowing. Last night's rain has melted this weekend's snow.

 From the learning rooms...
We moved last week and we have someone coming today and tomorrow to work on putting in a garage door and opener. So we are taking some time off. I thought about starting back today, but I think we will do a read aloud this week and start back next week.

I am thankful for...
I am so thankful to be in a house again. I'm thankful for the first snowfall we had this weekend. I'm thankful to be in a church again. I'm so thankful for a fenced in yard so that we do not always have to walk the dogs on a leash. I'm thankful to be sleeping in my bed again. I feel so much better in the morning. I'm thankful that my husband has a job that he loves. It is all a little overwhelming at the moment because there is so much to learn, but that will come soon enough, and I see that look in his eyes that I have not seen in so many years and know that he loves his job. I could go on and on there is so much to be thankful for.

 From the kitchen...
I've started a crock-pot of vegetable soup for dinner and have plans for blueberry muffins.

I am wearing...
jeans and a black sweater.

I am reading aloud with the kids...
 Bruchko by Bruce Olson

I am hoping...
that the coop I found out about yesterday works out. It would be nice to meet and make some homeschool friends. We have meet some at a park day, but I think it will be easier in a coop.

I am creating...
or trying to create a plan for the house. It is still a little crazy with boxes. They were even more of a mixed up mess that usual and it is taking longer than usual to figure things out. There are still a few things missing from the kitchen. I'm planning to paint the inside next year and thinking on that too and dreaming up a kitchen renovation, but that will be a year or two before we can work on that.

I am hearing...
the sounds of kids voices as they are looking at a Garfield book together.

 Around the house...
There is so much to do!! I need to take it one step at a time. We are going to try and start working on a chores list for the kids. We need to work out what that will be and in a new home. So I'm going to try and set up some routines this week. I also need to work on the boys room and school room. There are still lots of boxes there.

One of my favorite things...
I love sitting in my living room with a cup of coffee in the morning and looking out the window at the mountains and the glacier.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
just taking one day at a time!

Thursday, October 23, 2008 - Home

We are in our new home and Chris got the internet up and running tonight.   We have found the most important stuff.  It going to be a mess for awhile, but it just feels good to be home and sleeping in MY BED again.  The kids are having so much fun.  It is almost like having new stuff.   It is going to be busy around here for awhile.  I'll take some pictures when I can.

Friday, October 17, 2008 - Last night in the hotel.

Our stuff arrived today!  The house is crazy and full of boxes.  This has been the crazest move for us yet.   I have no idea where anything is located and the house is a kaos.  We need to spend some time on the furniture arrangement.  I'm really glad we have the hotel for one more night.

I am so grateful to be moving in our new home!   I'm not sure when Chris will be able to get the internet running and I'll be busy trying to find some order in the mess the next few days.  I'll update you when I can.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - Oops I missed this Monday!

Original Home of The Simple Woman\

For Today...

Outside my Window...
it is a little breezy and cloudy.  We did see the sun on Monday and Monday morning was lovely!

I am thinking...we should be in our house this time next week with all the most important stuff found and settled.  Wish I fast forward a week.

From the learning rooms...the kids are busy on their math.  We will not be doing much this week.  Chris was off yesterday and with closing on Wednesday and getting the keys and the movers arriving on Friday....

I am thankful for...the fact we are moving in our house this week and that we will be settled before the holidays.

From the kitchen... not much.  I cannot wait to get my kitchen stuff this weekend.

I am wearing... P J's

I am reading... The Heavenly Man by Paul Hattaway.  This has been really interesting book so far.  It is about a house church leader in China.

I am hoping... most of our stuff makes it in good shape.  Our stuff has been loaded and unloaded and moved all over the place.

I am hearing... Rachel and Aaron talking while they make cereal.

Around the house... lots of stuff!  There are boxes we mailed from Barrow filled with school books and linens for or last night (after everything was shipped out) and stuff that was supposed to in storage, but was shipped to Barrow and I mailed to a friend to store.  There is a stack of libary books and suit cases.

One of my favorite things...listening to the rain at night before I go to sleep.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week.. I need to call or go by the trash company to set up trash pickup.  I have been unable to get them by phone today.  We are doing a few workbooks and reading this week.  Return all our library books to the library, so I don't misplace them in the confusion.  Take care of all the details of closing and movers and getting settled in the house.

If you would like to join "The Simple Woman's Daybook"  check out this website for more information.
