Last Chance to register for homeschool camp!
From the organisers of the camp:
The homeschool family camp at Lake Karapiro is in less than 2 weeks and I only have a couple of spaces left, so if there are any last minute registrations please contact me ASAP.
For those who are already registered feel free to pass this on via your homeschool contacts.
Also if are already registered, but have NOT paid your fees by this Friday, November 6th I will remove you from the camp list and offer your space to someone else.
Below is a summary of all the information I have sent out to the families who have signed up for the camp so far….
The camp runs from Tuesday 17 November to Friday 20 November at Lake Karapiro Out Door Pursuits Centre and Camp. Each family will pay for their own accommodation plus the cost of activities. Payment is made by way of bank deposit into a nominated bank account. I will give these details to you upon confirmation of your place.
The camp itinerary is as follows…
Day 1 – Tuesday 17 November
1pm – 3pm Check in and set up
3pm – 4:30: Shared afternoon tea, Meet and Greet.
4pm – 6:30pm Free time and evening meals (Each family responsible for own meal)
6:30 – 9:00pm – Evening games/entertainment/social time etc….
9pm – 10pm Family time or quiet evening activities
Day 2 – Wednesday 18 November:
9am – 4pm: (Children will be split into age based activity groups and participate in 3 of the following activities.)
Team Building
High Ropes
Raft building
Orienteering
Archery
Please note there are limited spaces in the groups due to restrictions on group sizes as part of the camps policy so places will be given on a first come first served basis.
4pm – 6:30pm Free time and evening meals (Each family responsible for their own meal)
6:30 – 9:00pm – Evening games/entertainment/social time etc….
9pm – 10pm Family time or quiet evening activities
Day 3 Thursday 19 November – Optional Activities at extra cost
9am – 4pm: (Those interested in participating in the following activities will be divided into workable groups and spend time with an instructor before having a go themselves.)
Sailing $20.25 p/p or Kayaking $22.50 per kayak
5:00 – 7:00 Group BBQ/Shared meal
7:00 – 9:00pm – Evening games/entertainment/social time etc….
9pm – 10pm Family time or quiet evening activities in own quarters
Friday 20 November
10am: Check Out
10am – 5pm: Waikato Homeschoolers Talent Quest in Cambridge for those interested in attending.
At this point there are only the powered and non powered camp site accommodation options left. Tenters will need to provide their own tent, cooking utensils, sleeping gear and food/drink. There is an ablution block and a camp kitchen with fridges and stoves for campers to use or they can provide their own cooking equipment. (eg:gas cooker/BBQ) Non powered tent site prices are $12 per AD and $9 per chd 2-12 years (PER NIGHT).
There is also the option of a powered camp site the cost of which is $14 per adult and $9 per child per night.
For all types of accommodation children are aged 2 – 12 years with under 2’s being free of charge. Everyone over the age of 12 is charged at the adult rate.
Each family will be responsible for their own meals other than the shared BBQ on the last night and the shared afternoon tea on the afternoon of arrival. (Volunteers will be required to be the BBQ cooks for this night.) Some families may prefer to share food and meal preparations at other times too, but that is up to each individual family.
As far as the evenings go I am leaving that in everyone elses capable hands to see what you can come up with but perhaps some group games/competitions like capture the flag or spot light tag. I am sure the kids can come up with some ideas between now and November. I know some families may prefer earlier nights and quieter evenings but I will leave that up to each individual family so long as the camp rule of quiet after 10pm is adhered to.
I think that is everything but if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
As mentioned above there are only a very few spaces availabe and not in every age group so I will need to know the ages of your children before I can confirm a place in the camp for you, should you decide you want to join us. The camp is in less than 2 weeks so I will need to hear from you within the next day or two if you want to join us.
Blessings

Should politicians have to listen to you?
| |
|
Please feel free share this information
OPEN LETTER
DEMOCRACY
Should politicians have to listen to you?
The politicians have a bad track record with citizen’s initiated referendums..
o In 1999, 82% of NZ’ers said the number of MP’s should be reduced to 99 – the politicians ignored it
o In 1999, 92% of NZ’ers said that the needs of victims should have greater emphasis, restitution and compensation should be provided, and there should be minimum sentences and hard labour for all serious violent offences – in response, the politicians reduced parole eligibility to 1/3’rd of sentences, instructed judges to impose the least restrictive sentence, and have made unenforceable token gestures towards victims
o In 2009, 87.4% said that a smack for the purpose of correction should not be a crime under the law – the politicians ignored it
o And some people believe that we need a referendum on the proposed Auckland ‘Supercity’ because of the major changes it makes to the form of citizen representation.
It’s about time the politicians got the message!
As you know, we are working with businessman Colin Craig on the March for Democracy www.themarch.co.nz
Colin Craig has been quoted as saying that he finds it “ deeply disturbing that such a clear message from the people of this country to government has been ignored. My forefathers fought for a democracy and in a democracy the government does not pass and retain laws that nearly 90% of the people don’t want. It is my turn to help fight for the rights of ordinary New Zealanders.”
Colin isn’t just talking. He’s putting his money where his mouth is. And we need to get in behind him.
As you can see, the purpose of this March goes even further than just the anti-smacking law. When NZ’ers and families speak with such a loud and united voice, as they have on these issues, the politicians must not be allowed to ignore them. It is significant that politicians are willing to accept democracy when it is to their benefit (i.e. getting elected!) but are willing to blatantly ignore it when suits their political agenda.
The March is not a one-off – it is part of a long term strategy to bring representative democracy back to NZ
Ironically, it appears that political parties are keen to accept petitions in their favour – United Future on daylight saving , Labour on night-classes – and they also support Referendums – National on MMP , Labour on the Auckland SuperCity , and the Greens on the Monarchy – but when it’s a Citizen’s Initiated Referendum, they suddenly go deaf!
When the law was passed in 1993 allowing referendums to be initiated by the people, senior National MP Sir Doug Graham said “..it will be obvious that, if the public overwhelmingly supported a proposition contained in a referendum, clearly it would have great persuasive weight and any Government that simply ignored it would do so at its peril .”
PLEASE MARK 1.30pm SATURDAY 21 NOVEMBER (meeting at the bottom of Queen St Auckland) IN YOUR DIARY – AND MARCH FOR DEMOCRACY!
More details will be added to the website over the next couple of weeks www.themarch.co.nz
Thanks for your consideration.
Kind regards
Bob McCoskrie
National Director

Refresh Conference – Nelson – 31 October 2009
Refresh E-Brochure
For present or future home educating mothers
Nelson, New Zealand
Saturday 31 October 2009
Hope Community Church, Ranzau Road, Hope
Come and be refreshed
As mothers we are always so busy serving, loving, teaching, cherishing

This day conference will provide you with an opportunity to do just this.
“Our days look like the scrap floor of a studio, frayed bits of work,
remnants snipped off family, a heap of countless fabrics – ministry,
creativity, worship, volunteerism. We’re ripped into pieces , and putting our
lives together again is like stitching a crazy quilt – driving us a bit crazy.”
Ann Voskamp.
Yet, God is weaving our lives from above into one seamless fabric.
Come and be encouraged by sitting at His feet and learning His ways…

Diana Waring is in New Zealand
Extremely happily married since 1979, Bill and Diana Waring home educated their three children for more than twenty years. The Waring children were the proving grounds for all the precepts, concepts, and encouragements Bill and Diana teach–the real-life examples of the wonders of home schooling! Now, new grandparents and somewhat empty nesters, Bill & Diana travel all over the world to share the joys of loving learning, honoring one another in the family, and enjoying the journey.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bill and Diana have arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand.
They will be spending the next couple of days in Akaroa after their 36 hours in either a plane or waiting at an airport. Thankfully Diana slept well on the San Francisco to Sydney flight. Her Auckland-Christchurch flight was delayed so we finally arrived at their bed and breakfast accommodation at 11pm.
We are expecting Diana to be on Radio Rhema
Update on Workshops
Reading, Writing and Maths in the Early Years Lennie Harrison
Practical tips, activities and games that help with learning to read, write and do maths, and a logical sequence for introducing them. They will be useful no matter what curriculum (or non-curriculum) you’re using, because they’re often quick and easy and don’t require a lot of preparation, and they can lighten up the day. Feel free to bring some ideas of your own to share with the group.
“Meat for Teenagers” Lennie Harrison
Questions tend to pop up during the teen years. Teens themselves have questions like: “What is God’s will for me?” or “Why should I bother with what God wants?” Parents may ask: “What resources have others found helpful for their teens?”, “What kind of parental involvement are we looking at and why?” or “What can we expect from our teens?” Lennie will share her perspective, followed by discussion. Predominantly Christian content.
Character Training. Linda Gage
The Home Education environment is a wonderful opportunity to focus on our children’s character. Linda will explore what character is, what affects its development and practical suggestions to support your character training through everyday life. The goal is to have an abnormal teenager! Start now!
Time Management. Linda Gage
Are you juggling too many balls while wearing hats of all shapes and sizes? Life is very busy as a mum at home. This workshop will look at the practical, emotional and spiritual sides of running your home, raising and educating your children, organizing all the stuff, training the Clean Team and keeping it all in balance.
“Avoiding Burnout – Keeping Going When the Going Gets Tough” Barbara Smith
This workshop will include a discussion of the symptoms of burnout and specifically causes of home school burnout. Strategies for avoiding burnout will also be discussed in detail.
NEW!! Developing Good Thinking Skills in the Course of Life. Led by Helen Pearson
This seminar gives ideas to help us to extend our children’s thinking past the recall of the “right” answers through to research, reasoning, reflecting, responding and reviewing. It will be practical, and immediately useful in whatever unit study or subject you are learning about. Helen will also briefly introduce the Interact Curriculum, a flexible, integrated, Christian curriculum based on these principles.
Helen and Dean Pearson have been home educating their five children for 15 years. Helen has worked as teacher and principal, she has trained student teachers and led seminars for homeschoolers and she is the author of the Interact Curriculum.
The History of Interact
While still a very young teacher, Helen Pearson, author of the Interact Curriculum, became the founding principal of KingsWay School in Orewa, New Zealand. Through this experience, though it was quite overwhelming at times, God birthed in Helen a great enthusiasm for education that seeks to honour God, and a joy in developing curriculum to this end.
After leaving KingsWay School, Helen was asked to develop material to assist others to integrate Biblical faith and world view into a dynamic learning programme. In answer to this request, the week before her first child was born, Helen created a curriculum overview – a four year cycle – for KingsWay School, believing that it would one day be available for wider use.
Between 1991 and 2001, Helen gradually developed sixteen units of work, each suitable for one term’s work. She has also had five children! Her husband, Dean and her mother have been a wonderful support with the children during the times she has worked on curriculum development.
The Interact Curriculum is now in use in approximately one third of schools in the NZ Association of Christian Schools. A number of homeschoolers also use the curriculum.
In 2008, in response to the new NZ Curriculum and recent educational thinking, Helen began updating the previous Interact Curriculum manuals.
The Interact Curriculum is now being written by a team of educators, and frequent input and critique from educators, advisors, and experts in various educational fields (both Christian and secular) who have been so willing to invest time and advice into the curriculum as Helen has developed.
Workshop Schedule and Outlines
Venue: St Andrews’ Uniting Church, Cnr Bank and Hunt Streets
Time: 10 am – 4.30 pm
This year’s symposium will be a gentle affair providing time to share the love, companionship and experience of our local home educating community. click here for more info
10.30 – 12 pm: Session 1: choose from –
Starting Out in Home Education – Sharyne Jaunay
In for the Long Haul – Janine Williams
Discussion Group
12 – 1.30 pm: Lunch
1.30 – 3 pm: Session 2: choose from -
Letting Go – Martin Herbertson
Unit Studies – Rose Tattersall
Discussion Group
3.30 – 5 pm: Session 3: choose from –
Unschooling – Learning in Freedom – Kerrin Taylor
The Project Approach – Shelley Williamson
Loving Literature – Sharyne Jaunay
5 pm: Goodbyes and clean up
(Please help with this as much as you are able!)
Starting out in Home Education: nuts and bolts of how to get started as well as keeping going … the workshop will include exemption applications, ERO reviews, choosing curriculum and, hopefully, answering your questions.
Sharyne is a passionate and experienced home educator who draws on a wealth of experience – 10 children and nearly 20 years of home educating.
The Long Haul: Surround yourself with Friends: how to make it through with home schooling when you’re in for the long haul. Some ideas on how to make home schooling life easier (and hopefully more fun) and to help you get to the other end without burning out.
Janine has five children between the ages of 8 and 19, all of whom are still at home, and she has been home schooling for 14 years.
Letting Go: This workshop will help you recognise the fears and habits that the world drums into us and help you find the courage to let go of them. It will cover the evolution of an unschooling family and, in particular, the deschooling of the parent.
Martin has worked as an ecologist and freelance writer and, for 8 years, as a high school teacher. Four years ago he left teaching to educate Felicity and Jack at home and, in that time, they have gone from a structured regime to one where the children are allowed to develop their own interests.
Unit Studies: How to plan an organise a unit allowing for your children’s personal strengths and interests. Opportunity will be given to create a framework for your own unit study.
Rose is the mother of 8 children and has been home schooling for 14 years. She has a passion for providing an environment that encourages children to enjoy their learning.
Unschooling – Learning in Freedom: we all learn best when we are following our interests. This means children too! As home educators, we are in the ideal situation to support our childrens’ learning as they discover the world in their own way.
Kerrin has 7 children and has unschooled 5 of them over the last 9 years. She has survived a successful ERO review while unschooling. She is keenly interested in the process of learning and regularly undertakes new learning experiences herself.
The Project Approach: Learning should be an adventure! Homeschooling is full of trying methods out to see what works best for each child. This workshop will allow you to explore a creative approach that helps our younger investigators to form their own questions and find their own answers.
Shelley has 3 children aged 3, 6 and 8. She knows that her children are their happiest when making their own discoveries to make sense of their world.
Loving Literature: finding the good books to read and learning to love literature. Sharyne will guide you gently through her pick of the best reading material.
Discussion Groups: These sessions will be gently facilitated, without set agenda, allowing us the opportunity to spend time with others raising questions, sharing concerns and successes so enabling us to learn from the wisdom that is in our group and strengthen our connections with one another. Please bring anything you would like to share or discuss.
Our Symposium! Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested.
Look at our website – http://www.whesg.koru.net.nz - for full details of the day’s schedule and workshop outlines. If you are unable to access the info on the website, reply to this email and Kerrin will send it to you.
Please let me know if you are coming as this will help our planning – 438 3313 or glamms@igrin.co.nz
There will be a second hand resources table as usual using the same system if you would like to sell anything you are finished with – put an envelope with your name and the amount you want attached to each item or inside each book – this needs to be done for each individual item to assist the process.
Also, if you have a cottage industry going at home and would like to show or sell your wares, please feel free to bring these – there will be room in the foyer and you are welcome to arrive early to set your stall up.
Also, also, we are going to need as many hands on deck to set up and clean up on the day so if you can help at all or would be happy to do some kitchen duty – please, please let me know.
