Assessments and Why??

We are assessing Josiah because his ability in Language Arts keeps escaping me. I can't seem to find a program that will last a full year and not be 90% busy work. This year's Grammar has had only 2 new topics which ds was able to actually learn (as in not review). His Vocabulary Roots has been little challenge (his week long lesson takes 15-20 min.). And I just can't keep ds in books for reading. He reads a Jr. High chapter book a day and scores 9's and 10's on the Book Adventure quizzes. This is aside from history, science and biographies that I require him to read.

So we are considering grade skipping several years in Language Arts. So far I have required that he complete two grammar programs (done on alternate days) for each grade levels work even if he knows the materials. He will be finishing 5th grade grammar using this method in just a few weeks.

But to do this I need to have a better grasp as to where he is. Not an "I'm so proud of my little man" view, but a realistic analysis of where he really is. I want to make sure that it is actual skills acquired and not just books completed. So I thought that the very FREE K12 assessments might be a good place to start.

*I'm not really assessing Micah... His testing was just because he wants to do everything his big brother does. But he did the work so he had to get the credit.

I can't remember if you're doing Latin or not...but if not, I highly recommend it! Your ds will be keeping those grammar skills sharp AND learning something new! :)
