Old Paths

Sep. 21, 2006 - Book of Wisdom

For my 17th birthday my parent's gave me a pretty little blank notebook my mother entitled "Jen's Book of Wisdom".  She wrote this inscription in the front:

"Gleaned from far and near, old and young, simple and sophisticated; and of course her mom and dad. All bits of wisdom carefully checked and double checked with God's Word (Acts 17:11) before being entered as wisdom (Proverbs1:7)"

That little commonplace book is one of my most prized possessions and I often refer to it for a quote, verse or poem that I recorded there. I only wish that I had continued to be as faithful at entering things into it as I was at the beginning! I'm afraid my quote saving system has become more technological in nature, which, though useful, lacks a certain charm.

Having learned more about commonplace books, and notebooking too, this is an area I hope to guide my children to develop faithful habits in. Collections of this nature are just another important little way to keep a record.

Jennifer, this is Bonnie in FL from Kim C's blog. You posted a comment to my comment about my "never-empty" nest! I did not know any other way to contact you (looked for an email link on your website, but didn't find one -- hey, I am a dinosaur!)

Anyway, thanks for your response to my comment. God has indeed blessed me and my family in this present time, as well as my family back for generations. Of course, we trust our 21 precious grandchildren to him for the time when we won't be here.
Yes, it is an old-fashioned lifestyle, and we love it. And as you said, we also truly believe that's the way it is supposed to be.

Jennifer, several ladies have asked me to do a blog, and my sister has offered to set it up for me. Is this server one that would be easy to use? If you don't feel you should correspond here, I will be glad to supply an email address, or I understand if you don't think you want to correspond at all!

Now, on topic! I really appreciated your thoughts on the book of wisdom your mother and father gave you. It is a wonderful habit to be in -- and I, like you, wish I had been more faithful in journaling in my early motherhood years. It is never too late! I believe your grandchildren will cherish anything you leave for them. I know I treasure the written records and thoughts of my maternal grandmother. You have wise parents!
