Absolutely No TV Week

That"s right, no Curious George, no Arthur, and no Super Why. That also means no March Madness (college basketball championship tournament) and no This Old House as well as Antiques Roadshow. Whew! I depend on these shows to keep people occupied so that I can get things done without being interrupted. But, the kids have gotten to the point that they are arguing over who gets to watch what and when, which is driving this old school marm nutty! So I've put a ban on the TV in hopes of more harmony in the household and more time for my hubby and I to spend together. He was all for it BTW.

The little cherubs are out in the pasture now catching butterflies and grasshoppers with their butterfly nets and popping each poor creature in their bug boxes. Pre-TV ban they would have been sitting on their behinds watching Curious George at this time. So they are getting exercise and studying God's creation (P.E. & Science). What more could I ask for?  Of course most of this was written tounge in cheek, we were watching too much television and schoolwork was starting to suffer and I didn't want just one more distatraction so eliminating TV for one week seemed the simplest. Actually, it hasn't been missed that much thus far - We"ll see how it goes. Blessings! Julie

Apr. 1, 2008 - No TV

You are a brave woman! And I applaud you. Pretty sure hubby wouldn't go for it around here, though I'd love to give it a try. I'd miss Hannity and Combs, HGTV and American Idol. All things that won't make a hill of beans in eternity.

Go girl!

Apr. 1, 2008 - Yeah! No TV!

Way to go on pulling the plug for a week. Our family had also fallen into the trap of the mind-numbing television this winter, so at the end of February I announced that March would be TV-free. The look of shock wore off after about a week and it was great! We played board games after dinner. The children (ages 12 to 2) figured out plenty of ways to play together, and there was MUCH less arguing in the house. "I don't want to watch that!" "Move! I can't see!" Blah, blah, blah.

It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be, but I did discover that when Mommy left the house a couple of evenings, they watched movies. It made Daddy the Fun Guy.

Hey, at least it was an improvement. And you know what? I think April's gonna look a lot like March. Don't tell my children, OK?

Hope you all have a wonderful spring!

We don't usually turn our tv on very much anymore. We used to have routine programs that we watched, but now usually we only just watch special shows (like the complete Jane Austen, on Masterpiece Theatre!) We also love to watch movies, but our time watching them has been cut down lately, due to the fact that our dvd player doesn't work.

For the most part my sister and I really don't mind. We can always find things to do with ourselves, things that are much better than watching tv!

I am glad that you are enjoying a week of no tv. Maybe you will never want to watch it again!

Oh, by the way, Welcome to HSB!

Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

Big head alert! I had to tell my husband that I was the coolest person you never met :)
Thank you for stopping by my site. Glad you liked it.
I think no TV is excellent. We need to get rid of all our screen time for a while. TV, X-box, Wii, and computer. The kiddos have a set amount of time that they can have "screen time", but none at all for a short time would be great. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Julie,

I've enjoyed your blog! Way to go with "No TV week"! I truly believe this is a worthy cause. When my girls were younger, I was very strict about this b/c I feel that even "good" TV gets in the way of so many better things in life. I truly think that they have become creative writers, musicians, artists and avid readers and board game players because of their lack of TV. Now, they are older, 9 and 14 and we have a few favorite shows....I Love Lucy, The Dog Whisperer and American Idol. They watch approx 4-5 shows per week. Keep up the good blogging and parenting! God bless you and your family.

I think you are awesome for turning the TV off. The TV drives me nuts but don't get me wrong we use it. Sometimes too much then I too have to be the enforcer and turn it off. It does work well for correction. Right now we are on day 5 of a no tv for 5 days correction They don't like to lose computer or Tv time. we try to limit it but I am not a morning person and man I love to get that free time while they watch something, but you know the weirdest thing happened the other day. it was morning, the tv was not on, my boys were playing, and I was sitting there thinking "wow I can still sit and take some time to plan my garden, they can actually occupy themselves" but day 5 of no tv I am back to thinking " can I turn the tv on yet to keep them from running through the living room 200 times with their ships" It is an endless battle "to turn it on or not to turn it on" Oh and it is hard to enforce no tv when my husband buys a new 37" tv and had it on 75% more than usuall because he is just so amazed by his new toy.

We got rid of the tv years ago and I've never regretted it! (we do have a dvd player for the occasional movie) Now when we do see television at someone's home, it is shocking how bad it's gotten! Even if the kids are watching something that's fine, the commercials are trash!

Old School Marm's Musings & Observations

Sunday-July 20th-2008
This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
