Forty Acres, A Husband, and Three Kids

Happy May Day!

Wow, it's midafternoon here, windy, and hot. It is Oklahoma after all so the wind is a given. You've heard the song I'm sure. Hubby is going after three more calves this afternoon, one for D2 and the other two for some friends that also participate in the bucket calf project. D1 has named her calf, Rodeo. He is a spunky little thing. Amazingly they are different in temperaments and intelligence. We have had some that are so curious and will watch our every move with interest while others just want to be fed and left alone. And then there are others that don't seem to have a lick of sense. They usually cause the most problems (constantly turning their water buckets over etc...).

Before sitting down to write this, I was in the vegetable garden getting some tomato plants and bell pepper plants staked. The kids were on the other side of the yard jumping on the trampoline. I find working in the garden more pleasant when I can hear the children laughing and getting along with one another and not interrupting me with trivial disputes as just recently happened. Usually I am called to referee these with a long Mooomeeee!!! Sometimes I ignore, hoping they will work it out on their own and I will not have to walk over to the other part of the yard (knowing that I will have to walk back across the yard to resume working on whatever I was 'working on'). But alas they still haven't learned the valuable lesson of conflict resolution. Any help out there for constant bickerring among siblings? It really gets to where it wears me slick.

Besides our little domestic disputes, all is well here on our forty acres. School is going to go longer than I had planned but I am okay with it and letting the kids take a day off today to enjoy the sunshine and warm day. It seems a bit strange that May is already here, April sped by. I guess our being so busy last month caused it to seem that way. I hope all of you are enjoying Spring, hot Summer temperatures will be here before we know it. Blessings! Julie

If you find the solution, you could bottle it, sell it and make a fortune! It's windy here in NM, too. Perhaps we're just sending our wind your way. Good luck with those calves. I always had sheep growing up and they too had distinct personalities.

It sounds as if all is going well around your farm. I really enjoy working in my garden too--although it is a small herb garden.

I sure know what you mean -- somedays it feels like I'm constantly wearing my referee hat. Here is a glimpse of a popular conversation at my house, "Mommeeeeee!!!"
"Before you speak remember, if you are 'tattling' then you too will recieve the discipline handed out for the "crime".
"Well I'm not sure if I'm tattling?"
"Ask yourself these questions, 1) has the person you are about to speak to me about, broken a Commandment....from the Bible not one of your own(wink!wink!) 2) hurt you or anyone else physically? or 3) spiritually? and finally #4) is there a flood or fire anywhere?"
"Mom!! That's not fair!"
"And it's not fair that you are choosing to come to me to really just complain and whine about something you don't like."
"But Mom!"
"Please feel free to come to me to share praises worth singing about!" And they are off....most likely unable to remember what they were going to 'tattle' about in the first place.

Hello and thanks for leaving a comment at RockyRidge. You were probably discouraged to find that it is not all about Laura! We visited there last summer and it was so awesome. We hope to go back this summer. My grandma lives in NW Arkansas, so we pass through that way from IN. Laura's life touched both my husband and I in profound ways. When we got home we read every book we could get our hands on about her and her family. RockyRidge is my blog for me. My homeschool blog is widely read by family and friends who don't homeschool, so I can't always say what I want to say there, but I want to keep that blog going to show them what we are up to. You have a great blog here. I enjoyed my visit.

Old School Marm's Musings & Observations

Sunday-July 20th-2008
This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
