You Know It's Bad When...

You say we are going to work on getting this house cleaned up today and we will not stop until it is completely cleaned up and (gasp) the kids agree. Yes, it is that bad I am embarrased to confess .  Usually, there is unrest in the ranks, lots of groaning, moaning, and resistance. But thankfully, they are on my side and feel the need also to tame this beast that used to be our lovely home. Clean clothes have not been put up for over a week and have piled up on the loveseat, the kitchen countertop is covered with canned goods, an assortment of bills and school papers as well as whatever is hiding beneath these things! The floors are hideous and too bad to even describe (think- dining room floor- underneath kitchen table- after small children have eaten rice, shredded wheat, gloppy jelly sandwiches). Much, much more but I do not  want to horrify bore you with all the details and besides I must go and find the vacuum cleaner. Have a wonderfully clean house day and know that by this evening, we will be back in the land of more organized, sanitized, and saner living. Blessings, Julie

Just wanted to mention that we saw a tornado yesterday evening approximately 4 miles SW of our house. The kids were in the cellar and hubby and I were watching it from the cellar steps. It was strangely surreal because as we were watching it we were listening to the weatherman on the radio down in the cellar describing where it was and who in the area needed to take cover, namely us. We didn't get to watch for long as golfball size hail started raining down on us. Fortunately, no real damage to speak of just a greater appreciation of God's awesome power!

I hope you and your little ones had much success with your housecleaning. I am one of the "older" moms too. I didn't get a late start I just never stopped!! I enjoyed viewing your blog.

We understand about those intense house cleaning days. My biggest frustration is that the very next day it is a wreck again. Oh well, maybe one day we will figure out how to keep everything sparkling and organized.

You sound like me last Saturday! I don't know why it's so hard to keep things in order and clean. We did a super deep cleaning last Saturday, and it's pretty much back to how it was. It's comforting to know that I am not alone in this struggle!

I am glad the tornado kept it's distance! At least somewhat of a distance. We don't get tornados here in Oregon, but I do have nightmares about them some nights..YIKES!

God Bless!

I think I've only been in OK once and I saw a tornado fairly close then. Glad it didn't get you!

House cleaning? For now, it's a lost cause in this house. But I told my husband yesterday that one benefit to living in the chaos of this remodel is it makes me never want to have the house like this again. It gives me resolve to be more organized once the house returns to normal.

Blessings to you this weekend.

Oh, I SO relate with the house issue! Us too! All the time it seems. I hope you got ahead of the messy house monster!

And wow about the tornado! That's scary to have been so close. Praise the Lord you all are alright. My son has a huge fear/fascination with tornados and all weather for that matter. I think he may want to be a meterologist.

Blessings,
Melissa

How scary, I am glad you and your family are safe and your home was not affected.

These kind of things really keep us thinking about how our lives are in God's hands.

I loved your blog and your tribute to your husband.

Your children are lovely.

Praise God you're all ok! That mess would have seemed pretty small compared to a tornado!

Thank you also for telling us that our messes are not terribly unique. I was posting my "mess du jour" on Mondays on my blog. I should really start that back up.

Take care, and thanks for posting your reasons for losing weight!

Green Hour - Discover the Wonder of Nature

Old School Marm's Musings & Observations

Monday-September 22nd-2008
Last week the children and I went for a
nature drive on the country roads that
surround our house. We observed a large
white herron, two fawns crossing the road in
front of our van, cattails growing in the
ditches, and the Osage Orange tree with it's
large horse apples. The children and I were
amazed at the abundance of wildlife we saw as
well as the wide variety of plants and trees.

Yesterday, we took our nature walk down the
the dirt road that we live on. I was so
surprised at how many wildflowers we
discovered in the ditches and several we had
not even seen before! We were excited at the
number of deer tracks we saw, especially the
tiny fawn tracks. We even came across
some wild plum trees with ripe fruit on them!
I brought some back with us, we washed them
and ate them...yum, so sweet and juicy.

Today, the children and I foraged for Lamb's
Quarter during our nature walk. I cooked
the leaves tonite and we all thought it
tasted like a mixture of spinach and
mustard greens. I have to confess I was a
a bit apprehensive about eating a weed.

Recently I have been reading more about
edible plants and foraging. While gaining
a greater admiration for the pioneers and
Native Americans due to their ability to
utilize the flora for both consumption and
medicinal uses, I can't help but ponder the
mortality rate due to eating plants, stems,
or roots that were misidentified or not
properly prepared.

This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
