Painted Bunting

In the Spring, we enjoy watching the wide variety of birds that migrate through our part of Oklahoma. These neotropicals are interesting and fun to learn about. The Painted Bunting is one of these that our family has taken a real interest in. We usually spot them where our pasture fence starts at the end of the backyard. Fortunately, the kitchen window looks out over the backyard, pasture, and lake in the distance so I am the one who spots the buntings first. I always keep binoculars on the windowsill so that I can get a closer look and then call the kids to come take a look. The birds are so colorful and are also known as the Mexican Canary. Buntings are in the Finch family and the Painted Bunting winters in South Florida, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Panama (what a life). Is there a particular bird that you and your children enjoy watching?  Blessings, and I hope all you Moms had a wonderful Mother's Day!

How beautiful! We have a pair of kildeer that like to nest on the ground in the vacant lot behind us.

May. 12, 2008 - We love Birdwatching

Posted by rebeccahuff
Our house is surrounded by trees and we see a wide variety of beautiful birds. I recently purchased a bird book for my children so they could identify various ones. I still really enjoy watching this family of red cardinals that love the dogwood tree (the view is perfect from my chair in the living room), but there are lots of them to watch. They love our compost pile too, since there is usually a little cornbread in there! Thanks for your encouragement!

Hi Julie,

Oh, I wish we could see the Painted Bunting, they are truly breathtaking. We, however, do not get them in our area, not even migrating.

We do get the Indigo Bunting though. The males are brillant blue. And I just saw one in a tree yesterday and got a photo of him. It's not the best photo, but I'll be posting it soon. I do not get to see them very much because they very rarely come to feeders.

Blessings,
Melissa

I love the hummingbird, they are just fascinating to watch with their tiny wings going so fast you really can't see them.
Btw, sometimes I wish I could be a bunting if that means vacationing in all of those tropical places for the winter! LOL

Andy loves birds, especially the blue birds that come into our yard. They tend to perch on a leaf-less branch in our pine tree. They are beautiful. The other birds he really likes are the dove. HE's learned their silohuette in the sky. These aren't birds, but he also loves to watch for bats at twilight.
Those buntings are beautiful. I've never seen one before.

Thank you for visiting my blog. Have really enjoyed reading your posts.
We have blackbirds nesting in our guttering, and the children really enjoy watching the parents collecting food for the babies, and listening to the little ones chirps.

That is a gorgeous bird! We love so many of our birds for so many different reasons. Some of our backyard favorites are cardinals, house finches, gold finches, and chickadees. Recently we have noticed the kildeer in the empty lot next door. They are funny to watch. We really get excited when we see a robin or a bluebird as they don't show themselves much. Our mourning doves are starting to act wacky. Usually they feed from the seeds on the ground underneath the feeders, but lately they are flapping up to the feeder itself or resting on the deck rails.

Thanks for your comments on my blog. I have to tell you I am not actually teaching foreign language and if I did it would be one I know better-Spanish! But my daughter can work the CD player and wanted to listen to Italian, so hey why not! Haha!

I will definitely report back on our conference trip. We leave one week from tomorrow!

I'm grateful for the blue birds we get, as Elisa said above. I don't remember them in Texas, or Arkansas or any other place I've lived, so it is great to have them here. We thought one would nest in the birdhouse, but it was too close to the Andy sand pit, now sand box.
