Bluebird Reconnaissance

Odd title I know, but check this out:These two are planning  another sneak attack on little ole me as I try to get  a picture of their brood. Believe me it is quite unnerving when these two dive down at me and snap their beaks repeatedly. Their babies are now 13 days old and as far as I can tell, when I'm not being ambushed, there are four nestlings. Momma Bluebird and Papa Bluebird are both feeding them. Obviously, I didn't get the picture of the babies...perhaps later.

My blogging break was rather short.  Honestly, I made the decision to take a break from this because my children were interrupting me while I was posting entries and commenting on others blogs. I heard myself telling my kiddos, "not now, maybe later" when they wanted to play a game with me. I was getting irritated with their needs and desire for my attention. The girls would watch over my shoulder and ask, "who's blog is that?" I really started to see my behavoir as somewhat pathetic and hypocritical. Hypocritical? Yes, I am bigtime guilty here. I've spouted way too many times to my children that most mothers are selfish and being home 24/7 with their kiddos is not something they desire or aspire to. My seven year old is very insightful and a few weeks ago told me that I spend too much time on the computer and not enough with her. She was right. I was making the choice to spend my time away from her and my other two children. Choosing to blog is not selfish, but blogging while my children need me is. I guess it's really that simple. So I've decided that if I'm to continue to do this I will have to post entries and comment after the children have gone to bed or in the mornings before they get up. I know so many of you have already figured this out, but I can be a little slow at times :-).  Thanks for all the encouragement and prayers...I really have been enjoying getting to know so many of you.

Now something funny:

You know you're a homeschooler when your children fight over whose turn it is to look at the Rainbow Resource catalog.

You know you're a homeschooler when your four-year-old son voices that he likes Nature better than Nova on PBS. (He watches both)

And now a picture that I recently took entitled, Summer Attitude:

Blessings, Julie

Hi! I love your blog and all the great pictures! I found you from Lexi's blog--and I recommended Raising godly tomatoes to her (I know others did too) . Enjoy summer! It is short for us in the northeast! I added you as a friend.

I really understand about the "when to blog" dilemna! I try to blog when my children are occupied with something and will be for awhile or before or after they are sleeping. But it doesn't always work out that way. I've found that blogging (writing and sharing) is very therapeutical for me! It's my thing where I can express myself, openly share my faith and talk about my love of nature. I try to multitask and look at it as some Bible study to, because I'm quite frequenly looking up Scriptures and praying in response to blogging. But, I certainly know that sometimes if I'm not careful it can become too much of a focal point, and I need to pull back.

So glad to see you are back, I really enjoy reading your writing! And I love your photos!

Blessings, Melissa

You are so right that it can be so easy to get lost in "blog world" rather than tending to the kids need for our attention. I've found myself in this spot several times during summer break. I'm looking forward to getting back to school next week...and a schedule that is centered around my kids rather than what ever we feel like. Summer break is good...for a while. :)
Love all the pictures!

My middle girl is intuitive like that and says things to me often that are painful to hear, but so true! I am glad you "got it all figured out," so to speak! Is it just me, or are you having issues with your blog?

Oh, and I had to laugh at your last comment on my blog. Wish you could have seen beyond the unmade bed...it was worse all around it! LOL!

Green Hour - Discover the Wonder of Nature

Old School Marm's Musings & Observations

Monday-September 22nd-2008
Last week the children and I went for a
nature drive on the country roads that
surround our house. We observed a large
white herron, two fawns crossing the road in
front of our van, cattails growing in the
ditches, and the Osage Orange tree with it's
large horse apples. The children and I were
amazed at the abundance of wildlife we saw as
well as the wide variety of plants and trees.

Yesterday, we took our nature walk down the
the dirt road that we live on. I was so
surprised at how many wildflowers we
discovered in the ditches and several we had
not even seen before! We were excited at the
number of deer tracks we saw, especially the
tiny fawn tracks. We even came across
some wild plum trees with ripe fruit on them!
I brought some back with us, we washed them
and ate them...yum, so sweet and juicy.

Today, the children and I foraged for Lamb's
Quarter during our nature walk. I cooked
the leaves tonite and we all thought it
tasted like a mixture of spinach and
mustard greens. I have to confess I was a
a bit apprehensive about eating a weed.

Recently I have been reading more about
edible plants and foraging. While gaining
a greater admiration for the pioneers and
Native Americans due to their ability to
utilize the flora for both consumption and
medicinal uses, I can't help but ponder the
mortality rate due to eating plants, stems,
or roots that were misidentified or not
properly prepared.

This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
