Small Town Charm

This past week we have driven ten miles one way every morning to drop the girls off at Vacation Bible School. We being myself and my four-year-old Little Guy along with the girls. He is too young to attend VBS so he heads back home with me.

This particular morning while turning the corner from the church, I noticed a yard sale in front of a small business halfway up the block. Screeech! I brake for yard sales and this one looked promising as there were more than just a couple of tables set up. Little Guy excitedly jumped from the van (I've taught him well) and we both hurried over. We shopped and found nothing, so hand in hand we headed back to the van.

Nearing the van we suddenly were startled by a loud siren. We then noticed a firetruck turning the corner in front of us and pulling up beside a parked car that had it's hood up. Smoke was billowing up from the inside of the car. We hurriedly walked up the street  to get a better look. Other emergency vehicles were pulling up just as we arrived at the scene. We stood watching along with other curious passerbys as a fireman hosed the engine of the car down with water. Gradually the engine stopped smoking and we then started our walk back to the van.

Little Guy then asked if he could play at the park that was directly across the street from the church where I had just dropped the girls off. Thinking why not, we walked over to the park and Little Guy immediately began playing on the climbing wall. He soon tired of that and wanted me to swing him. So I pushed him in the swing for what I thought was long enough and we then headed back to the van.

Once in, I looked at the clock and had to chuckle. It was only 9:25! We had shopped at a yard sale, been to a fire smoking, and played at the park for a total of 25 minutes. And all had been less than a blocks distance. Only in a small town.

Blessings, Julie

Jul. 18, 2008 - Sounds like a great morning

Posted by kcmyworld
and I grew up in small town America, so I can relate. Except for the dropping the kids off at VBS. My dd doesn't like to do much of anything away from me unless ds would be in her class, so I thought we'd put of VBS another year and see how it looks next summer. But an amazing thing happened today - she asked to take the next session of swimming, knowing that ds will be in a different level. The key? She's bonded with her current teacher and he will be teaching again next session and she can be in his class.

Blessing to you and have a great weekend!

Sounds like the little town I grew up in! I don't live in such a small town anymore though, and I miss it.

Right after you posted the first time, I came back to your blog and looked at your slide show, and as soon as I saw your "unidentified bee" and knew you had a Hummingbird Moth too!

I went outside amongst the clover for a few minutes this morning with my Dad and it wasn't long before we got to see him fluttering about again. They are very friendly and do not mind you being too close.

I think not too many people notice them, because they resemble bumblebees so closely. But they are very unique!

God's creation is so cool!!

Reading about your small town made me miss my hometown. My parents still live there and I treasure my visits home.

You gotta love 'em. Does your have a 4 way stop? Does it have a stop sign sitting in the middle of the road with 4 stop signs on it? Or has it grown to the point of having a stop light? I love the small towns of Oklahoma. I plan to retire in Fairview, even though it isn't that small anymore. Your blog just took me home, tonight. Thank you.

I thought you were going to say that it had gotten so late you might as well stay! Hee hee. Our town's fairly small population wise, but it's very spread out and has very few sidewalks. It's hard to walk anywhere. *sigh* I hope you have a great week.

Green Hour - Discover the Wonder of Nature

Old School Marm's Musings & Observations

Wednesday-August 13th-2008
Yesterday, we took our nature walk down the
the dirt road that we live on. I was so
surprised at how many wildflowers we
discovered in the ditches and several we had
not even seen before! We were excited at the
number of deer tracks we saw, especially the
tiny fawn tracks. We even came across
some wild plum trees with ripe fruit on them!
I brought some back with us, we washed them
and ate them...yum, so sweet and juicy.

Today, the children and I foraged for Lamb's
Quarter during our nature walk. I cooked
the leaves tonite and we all thought it
tasted like a mixture of spinach and
mustard greens. I have to confess I was a
a bit apprehensive about eating a weed.

Recently I have been reading more about
edible plants and foraging. While gaining
a greater admiration for the pioneers and
Native Americans due to their ability to
utilize the flora for both consumption and
medicinal uses, I can't help but ponder the
mortality rate due to eating plants, stems,
or roots that were misidentified or not
properly prepared.

This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
