4H Craft & Bake Sale

Is it just me or does the time immediately after Thanksgiving up to Christmas seem to pass in a frenzy. I feel as if I have this voice in the back of my head that sounds like a drill seargent shouting, "GO! GO! GO!" Maybe it's because I haven't even started on Christmas cards or Christmas shopping... I think I heard a collective gasp out there. And I know that Christmas is not about those things but I still feel like I'm running in a race and I'm trailing behind...I hate that feeling .

Last night we had our annual 4H Christmas party and we started something new this year. The children were able to make crafts and/or bake goodies and sell them. Here are just a few things we took.

Home-made Christmas Ornaments

Wreaths

Potholders

Here are my young entrepreneurs ready to rake in the big dough.     Actually, they did very well. Most of the profits were spent on friend's wares though. We're already planning for next year.

Academically, we are trudging right along and forgive the word trudge but at times it can seem like that. I have got to get us into a good science curriculum that I can use with both Aubrey(9) and Lillie(7). I have been using a rather eclectic approach and neither child is behind according to the standardized test that Aubrey took this past spring, but I know we could be doing more. So with that being said, we are really going to hit some serious science for the next few weeks. I usually pull from several different science books that I have as well as the internet. Today, we are going to look at mold and discuss what causes it.

Oh and BTW, if anyone read my last entry...OU won. Oh well, we're not surprised but we gave them a real good game, 61-41.

Blessings, Julie

How prescious! Sounds like fun and a great business lesson too!

I too hear those voices! Time to shop, time to stop, time to go, time for cards, time to help others, time to give, yadda, yadda, yadda! I try not to worry or be anxious this time of year, but it begins in October and does not stop until January. I am struggling with school all of a sudden. I am back to wondering why I am doing it and if I should be doing it and man, just not in a good place today. Perhaps I will write in a "locked" post for all my homeschool Moms to comment and help me out.

Hey Cutie,

lol...you are so funny! Chittlins are boiled for about 5 or 6 hours, but every hour for the first 3 hours, you have to pour the water off of them and put fresh water in them because they are oily. Then season them to your taste and let them finish cooking. You have to have a taste for them...you either like them or you don't.

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving except hubby had to work most of the day:(

How was yours?

Hi Julie,

I love the homemade crafts!

I SO know what you mean about feeling like you have a drill sergeant in your head screaming at you to GO! I really related to that. It seems especially the older I get the years are going faster, and sadly I almost feel too stress out with time around the holidays to really enjoy things. It seems as soon as I get ready to do anything, it's New Years Day! BUT, I'm REALLY trying hard this year to slow down and ONLY do the few traditional things that my family loves to do each year, and thoroughly enjoy them. My Dad and I love to bake, so we have our Saturday scheduled next week to get together and bake up a storm! We also make a Gingerbread house each year with the kids on this baking day. And this Saturday my parents will be coming over to go with our family to cut a fresh Christmas tree at a local farm and then decorate. And we always head down to the Kentucky Horse Farm for their "Southern Lights" show, it's SO pretty. Church has like a bazillion activities going, but I'm learning to say no, I can't.

Oops! I didn't mean this to be a book!!

Blessings,
Melissa

We've had a better week as the home distractions dwindle. It's been nice to have two good days in a row! Good quiet times seem to have helped also:)

How is science going?

Hi Julie, The chickens are doing well. Paul stepped on one the other day and hurt it's leg. We set up a chick hospital in the spare room to let it rest. Julia said, "Mom, Don't cook it!" It is all better now and back in the chicken house with her friends. One day, however, it will probably be in our stew ;)

Dec. 3, 2008 - Hi Julie--- Merry CHRISTmas!

The crafts look great! Oh, how I understand your comment about feeling too attached to blogging. Life events have forced me to slow down, but it's always so refreshing to return to this supportive community and be able to pick up where I left off. The journaling and the kinship are necessary for homeschool moms. We may have groups and co-ops, but very rarely do we find in these the creative outlet and adult conversation/point of view that this particular blogger community affords. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Hope your Christmas is wonderful!

Hi Julie,
Just stopping by to say a belated hello. Yes, I do trudge along also. Today we really trudged, and now I am all worn out!
Your little boy is adorable. Emily turned five in Oct, and it just seems like big steps have been taken in her maturity all of a sudden. I confess I have really been ready to get out of that little kid stage, and already now I am beginning to miss it! How is this possible?! It's bittersweet. :o)
Hope all's well with you and yours.
