Blessed Sunshine & A Dickcissel

Here comes the sun (doot in doo doo)
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright

Little darling
It's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
It feels like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's alright
(Written & performed by George Harrison)

Oh the blessed sun is once again shining, thank you, Lord,  and there isn't even a hint of rain in the forecast for the next five days. The ground will dry out and I can get in the garden to finish planting the majority of the garden.

This morning we had a visitor slam against our back door.

We didn't know if he was going to make it at first. Some of the birds don't. Pretty soon the whole family was on the back porch taking pictures and trying to identify our little visitor. Tim even took a great deal of interest in it's well-being and agreed with Aubrey that he thought it might be a baby Meadowlark. I didn't think so as the bird was just too small for a Meadowlark and more distinctly marked than any baby bird I had ever seen.

The bird quickly became more alert and his condition improved. He flew to the porch railing where Tim got the last picture of our little visitor before he took off for the top of one of our Post Oaks.

Once inside, the children and I immediately set about identifying the bird. After looking closely at a couple of our bird ID books, we all agreed that our visitor was a Dickcissel. The description under the Dickcissel in one of our books said the bird looks a lot like a small meadowlark, good job Aubrey and Tim.

Dickcissels are mentioned in the book, "Little House on the Prairie" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura called them "dickie birds" because of the bird's call.

Hopefully we are on the downhill ride of the cold bug. A couple of us still have a nasty cough but I think we're near bidding it a good riddance. I hope all is well where you are and this Sabbath is both restful and blessed in your household.

~Julie~

What a unique opportunity to get great pictures of a bird! Unfortunate for the bird though; but glad he's alright. GREAT job identifying, by the way.

And glad to hear drier weather is there!

That bird is so cute!
I wish we had birds like that.
We only have about 5 kinds of birds that are often near our house.
Tell Aubrey I'm sorry I didn't write back. I forgot!
I might be able to write it tonight though.
Then I'd send it tomorrow so she should get one soon!

I'm so glad your visitor made it through his traumatic experience. I can remember as a child seeing birds hit our large plate glass windows in the living room, which often killed the poor creatures. Thankfully, I haven't seen that in a long time.

A female cardinal is currently making her nest in a flowering shrub in our front yard. We are hoping to get a peek at her young when the eggs are laid and hatched.

What a neat little fellow. So glad he was alright. That's neat you got such cool photos before he was gone.

Around here chewed off apple blossoms mean deer. Do you have deer there? They just LOVE apple blossoms and fresh tender leaves - even more than roses I would say. The bulk of our trees are inside an eight foot deer fence. The other one is next to the dog's kennel. Between the deer fence, the dog, and the cattle - the deer don't bother us much anymore, but we had quite a time the first two years we lived here.

Just checking in, my friend. We had the first cardinal visit our bird feeder not too long ago, but unfortunately, our kids weren't the "Quick Draw McGraw" with the camera that you obviously are (smile).

Hope you're getting a little more rest. God bless you.

Oh, I NEED some sunshine too! We've come to semi-arid Kamloops and it's done nothing but rain!! The forecast is better for the next week or so and I am very pleased!
Thanks for the additional info about the bird - I shall remember that when we read Little House.

What great pictures. And you do such a good job forget the bells and whistle camera. My little pocket Fuji sometimes does a better job than my Canon 40D. And it was way less expensive. I love the bird photos and the erosion ones. The lady bug picture is spectacular.

What a beautiful bird! He looks half-sparrow. :-) Anyway, it's great you were able to identify him - I've never even heard of that type of bird!
