Summer School For Us

The term "summer vacation" can be such a strange one to those that really don't take the summer off. In the past we've always tried to finish up school in the spring so that we would have the summer to take a break from school and get other projects done. That's changed.

We're continuing with school this summer except for a week long summer vacation at the beach next month. This will be our first year to try year-long school and to be quite honest I haven't even figured out exactly what our schedule will look. Our days get so hot mid-summer and schooling in the afternoons may work out just fine. The children would have mornings and evenings to play outdoors and swim. I didn't sign them up for any lessons this summer just so we would have more consistent days at home to focus on school.

Eastern Tailed Blue butterflies on Yellow Sweet Clover

Pearl Crescent on Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan)

I usually set goals for the children at the beginning of a new school year. Aubrey was to have all her multiplication tables (1-12) memorized by last December and she achieved that goal. I desired that Lillie would spend more time reading and Samuel beginning to read by the beginning of this summer, it's happened. We are still working on other goals such as memorization of states and capitols as well as scripture memorization. Personally those latter goals will be more obtainable for us if we continue to work on them throughout the summer instead of taking a two month long break. All that to say, I'm still trying to work out the logistics on how to set up realistic goals and objectives so that burn-out isn't on my horizon. Burn-out stinks.

Our "summer school" experiment will be yet another attempt by this homeschooling mom to see what works best for us. It really is all about unique family dynamics and personal teaching styles I believe. I'm learning that truth more and more as our family travels this homeschool road. The bumps, curves, and potholes are inevitable I know, just too many factors involved. But I'll still seek the downhill straight aways and perfectly paved highways with the guidance and wisdom of our Lord.

So the term "summer vacation" may be yet another term that will "not apply" to our family. Oh well, I've found that for the most part we're those proverbial salmon swimming upstream. And in these days and times it's probably good to teach them that our lives are not dictated or even shaped by the norms of society, thank You, Lord.

Blessings to you!

Your friend  the Salmon

We're doing some school throughout the summer too. Reading, math practice, Bible memorization and Apologia's Botany to go along with growing our garden. I'm trying to figure out if I'm making the right choice, because I have lots of summertime projects always. That's always when I do my Spring Cleaning projects. There's extra yardwork and this year we have a garden. Well, we'll see how it goes.

I've been thinking about this too. I shall be interested to see how you get on!
When I first heard someone talking about schooling all year round I was horrified - too used to the school system! Now, I still think children need a break, but my definition of a break has changed. Our 4 weeks in Canada were school of a different kind. If home education is a lifestyle, everything becomes an opportunity to learn, doesn't it? And, many teachers here moan about how when the kids come back in Spetember (sometimes after only a 5-6 week break - short summer break here) they seem to have forgotten everything they learned the year before! There's a lot to be said for keeping up with reading and some basic numeracy all year round.
We've taken this week off, though I wasn't planning to, but we were tired with jet-lag and I needed to get used to the UK again!! (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!)
God bless you!

What a wonderful post -- as usual, Julie! Thanks for sharing all your goals and dreams -- and all that you're accomplishing! Wow...when you write it out, you really HAVE to know the Lord's hand is in it, because we moms are just not THAT good! ;-) I've been awol on my blog for awhile, but getting back into it. We're expecting Baby 4, so I was not able to sit upright at the computer for awhile! :-) All is good now. I can even drink coffee again!
Blessings to you on your non-summer-vacation, summer! We, too, are doing our little school through the whole year, but trying to take it easy, at all times. We're up to about 45 minutes a day! Whoopee! haha...

Perhaps we'll catch a glimpse of one another as we both swim upstream! I agree that the family dynamics, etc. seem to keep us from that mirage of what a homeschool family "should" look like. I say mirage because it isn't reality. Our first year looked pretty close to what I thought it should look like, but the last two have been full of those bumps, curves and detours you write about. I think one of the hardest things about homeschooling is to actually let God lead and make your family look like what He intends instead of what we think societal norms dictate. Just keep swimming!

Robin

P.S. I was just reading about butterflies tonight and how if the edges of their wings are tattered and worn they are nearing the end of their lives. Never thought of them getting tattered like an old flag.

Hello dear fellow (fella) salmon,

Goals -- what a wonderful idea! I have been wandering in the wilderness for approximately 11 years now... only 29 to go? That would make 40. But if I set some goals maybe we could cut that 29 years to only 12 or so. My baby starts school this year, boo hoo! I have only settled on math and grammar curriculum for the coming year, nothing else. I need for God to just drop it in my lap and give me a verse: "Thou shalt teach these things to thy children." Wait a minute, I think there is a verse like that already in the Bible... I'd better go check that out a little closer. :o)

Yes on the ticks. Many, many, many. They seemed not to like us desert dwellers much. Maybe we were too dry, not juicy enough for them? My DH got a couple, but none of the rest of us did. My friend's 3-y.o. contracted Lyme's disease, however!! :o( Classic case. I keep waiting for my hubby to break out, but so far nothing. We'll know if he suddenly gets arthritis...

Amy wants to know how you get such good photos of those butterflies without scaring them away. :o)

Lord's day blessings to you ~

That sounds good to be looking at things in terms of goals and not a set school year anyhow. I'm with you on cutting back the paid summer lessons. Ironically, really the economy is not affecting our family too badly. We are just having to take a step backwards with our business and for right now I have to get back in there. It's hard for me to explain to others - because really I am a "mom there for the kids" kind of gal - but when God has given you another kind of life - you do what works and the main thing is the kids are mainly with DH or I. Also, all our plans are on hold, but you know I think I'm learning what really matters anyhow and as Dave Ramsey says - that there is a limit.

I love those butterflies. I remember there being a ton of butterflies when I was little spending summers with my Grandad in Texas. Perhaps that was because he was an avid gardener though - maybe that attracted those butterflies.

Oh, hey, I almost forgot. Yes, our egg layers are Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rock. They are great. I'm not dis-recommending Cornish Cross - they are the normal meat chickens people get - they GROW REALLY FAST. I was just surprised - I thought they would pasture feed, but they don't really - they just eat and eat and eat grain.

We "school" year round and love the freedom it gives us. I just wrote about it on my blog a few days ago. You are so right that it all depends on the family. I hope you have a blessed and adventurous Summer.

Yep, salmons here too, and proud of it. We pretty much school year round with lots of breaks. Like right now with all the conference hoopla going on I'm not trying to have them do anything except keep caring for the creek critters that keep being brought under our care; we're up to three big ole' frog tadpoles now, a huge male Green Frog and two box turtles!

Regarding putting our logo on your blog, thank you so much for trying so hard and I'm so sorry it's giving you troubles. In order to get the codes to work on my site I had to re-type all the quotes in/replace the quotes with quotes...I know, weird, but the html doesn't recognize the quotes on our codes from our site for some reason. I hope that makes sense enough and works for you, if not don't feel bad; we'll work on coming up with an alternative way.
Thanks again Julie for supporting us.

Blessings, Melissa

We have tried many different schedules, and still have not found a perfect one. But I think from the "vibe" I get of you through your writing, is that for your family school is not so rigorous and structured that you would be insane if you keep going through the summer. Do I have the right "vibe"?

By the way, I finally posted on my blog after a month and a half :)

Jun. 16, 2009 - The term "Vacation"

Posted by Timothy
Hi Julie,
You are wise in your choice to continue education. Remember, summer vacation was started so children could help around the family farm. But education and work go on year around, so this will keep them from getting a skewed viewed on life.

As for vacation, I'm not really sure what that means any more either. Seems like our honeymoon was the last time we had anything close to a vacation. I would love to go to the beach for a week. But the LORD has not opened that up to us. So we plod on...

Jun. 16, 2009 - Hello, beautiful!

Posted by bbullard
I LOVE your new pic that shows so much more of your face!

We normally work on math and reading in the summer, not a full schedule. The kids sleep later, and don't have to get up and "do school" the minute they wake up. This year has been different for us, too. We're wrapping up history that didn't get finished during the spring, and the oldest is finishing science that she didn't complete in the spring. One day into it, I find myself frustrated and having to lay down more formal rules that look like the regular school year. I keep thinking in the back of my mind that this is unfair to the kids and unfair to me as we don't get a break. Yet, I'm in a quandary as to what to do if we don't follow this plan, which made perfect sense in my head before I tried to implement it (HA HA!)

Anyway, in short, just wanted to say that I'm right there with you--a good idea with uncertainty about its implementation. Share your wisdom as you go.

Such beautiful photos, as always! I'm sure you'll find a great balance and avoid the burnout monster! You seem so gentle, I can't imagine your kids not having a great summer!

Jun. 17, 2009 - Keep on swimming

This is probably our first year with the summer planned as a break. VBS at the start, Basketball, Soccer, Archery, Skeet and Dad coming home will make for a short break. Wesley started workwooking projects for Father's Day, Bradley is tending to his quail. So the learning continues.
Just have fun doing the learning and it won't be work. Twisted Sister in Christ

Hey, Julie, just responding to your post. I will probably post more on my experiences this summer as I found an article that truly "nailed" it for me and helped my own confusion/ frustration/ general thinking.

We are potentially (and I'd place emphasis on that word if the comment fonts allowed) going on a cruise as a business opportunity. You can see more about the business I am developing at www.blessedheritage.com. We also have an opportunity to send my husband and perhaps two of the children to Belize next summer on a missions trip; that is my first travel priority, for all the reasons you stated regarding travel as an education and because of my desire to given the children a heart for missions and for the many in the world who have much, much less (I shouldn't let my daughter see this run-on sentence--smile). In addition to that, my niece is getting married in January in Puerto Rico--this younger generation does it differently. I have no problem with her decision, but I resent a bit that we are all expected to be there. So, that might be Mom's solo trip in order to represent the family. Of course, the Lord will have to step in mightily for us to do all of this, and I trust that if it is His will, He will provide.

God bless you today, Julie.
