Chickens on the Horizon

This particular entry is one that I posted over at my creation blog over a month and a half ago. I had forgotten about it quite honestly and had meant to post it here, but had never gotten around to it. I would appreciate any advice about keeping chickens and will keep you posted as to when we get the birds, more than likely sometime in September.

May 23, 2009

My dreams of having chickens someday is becomming a reality!

But a coop is still the missing link in my dream. Tim and Samuel have been very busy these past few weeks at preparing a part of one of our barns to serve the purpose of housing my birds.

We needed a concrete floor for the coop so Tim got on the horn and ordered it up.

Okay, I'm just going to be real honest with you folks, I don't know the difference between concrete and cement. so I may be calling it both.

Joy of joys! There aren't many things that will make a five year old boy happier than seeing a cement mixing truck making it's way up the drive.

We watched the driver maneuver the truck back behind Barn #1. The chute that protrudes from the barrel of the mixer was then carefully positioned through the opening in the barn wall that Tim had cut out earlier.

Then the fun began.   Oh my, this stuff felt like slogging around in oatmeal. I must say that if you ever have the opportunity to do this, do it. Everytime I heard the engine rev up more concrete came pouring down the chute in large amounts that immediately swelled around our boots. For some odd reason I kept thinking about all those old mob movies where some guy would get dumped in a lake with concrete shoes. Sorry, just sharing.

No, I didn't put my handprints in it, I wished I had.

Hopefully there will be a future post about the actual chickens coming home to roost here at our little homestead.

Until later my cool and over-the-top blogging buddies, Julie

(Can you tell I'm in a really good mood...that's cuz I'm gettin chickens!)

Wow! That looks like fun. However, I don't think your boots will ever be the same again.! Have a blessed week.

Oh the memories!! My dad was from a family of concrete workers. I grew up finishing concrete. I wish I'd known, I would have flown over to help! I can also grade with a Bobcat (skid steer tractor, not animal).

What kind of chickens are you getting? How many? We have 37 hens. They are six months old now and are giving us just over two dozen eggs a day.

I'm so excited for you. I know you've wanted these for a while. Can't wait to see the little gals :)

Just for fun, I sent a text to my cousin to ask if there is a difference in concrete and cement. I don't think there is, but I want a second opinion. I'll let you know when I hear from him.

Wow! That looks like a lot of fun! My boys would have been jiggling up and down with excitement!
We kept chickens in Congo, both for eggs and meat. That was how I was quite sure they weren't vegetarians when a veggie enthusiast teacher tried to tell her class that 'even chickens are vegetarians!' Bless her! We used to get chunks of ant hill and break it open for the chickens to get the ants. They'd go wild!
God bless you!

How wonderful! One of our family friends has about 15 chickens and we have been so blessed by receiving eggs from them every so often!!! We just love their eggs!!! There is such a huge difference from hand fed-organic chicken eggs and store bought eggs. I can't wait to read more about your chicken journey in the future! By the way -- great pic of you and I love your new top pic :) Blessings, EMichelle

It looks and sounds like fun! Yes, we are moving, and it is looking like we are moving to Kentucky! Too bad Oklahoma isn't really between Oregon and Kentucky. It will be rather strange, because we have only ever lived in Pacific states. Thank you for your well wishes!

Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

Julie, those chickens are livin' the good life, huh? I'd never heard of a concrete floor on a coop before.

What an experience. I looked at you guys in the high boots, and I thought that I'm glad to be a city girl.

I love your lillies! It's been so hot here in Texas until my garden will probably be all twigs waiting for a winter death!

God bless you, Julie!

We had chickens as a kid...they were rather fun. Can't wait to see pictures when you finally get them!

I don't think there's any difference between cement and concrete...unless cement is wet and concrete is dry. My dad layed many cement floors...or where they concrete? LOL.

BTW, LOVE your header photo at the top of your blog!!!

Hi Julie!
OH my, I do wish the Lord had made me a bit more tactful. Anyway, thanks for your comment on my latest post.

As for chickens, Plain Jane has some... you two are friends, are you not? Maybe she has some good advice. One piece of info I heard from an old Canadian friend is that cucumbers will make your hens lay more eggs. Is that a old wives' fable? No doubt it makes the yolks pale. :o) (Did you know Canadian eggs are pale yellow? I was told that is because they are fed wheat or something else, not corn. Maybe I am just a sucker for misinformation.)

I do apologize for the heat coming your way from here. I don't think that means it is leaving us, however. :o( Lucky for us, or providentially, our van is in the $hop, so I don't have to go anywhere. Yippee!

Wow, so excited for your chickens! I've researched our city's ordinances for chickens in the city, but since our yard is so very small, its not in my future plans, as long as we're in this current house. Looking forward to living vicariously through your 40 acres! ;-) Can't wait to see pictures of your new 'children', haha!

Jul. 14, 2009 - Pouring concrete

Posted by osumailguy
Julie,
If you don't mind, I will steer clear of the "concrete pouring" parties. That is was we were doing on June 25, 2001 when I took my fall that eventually led to the amputation of my leg (I was up on a wall making sure the doorway high enough for the truck to get inside!)

But you go and have as much fun as you can!

I don't know if I would have been brave enough to get in the cement, but it sounds like you had fun!

My husband is planning on buying a farm one of these days and I've been thinking of getting some chickens, but I'm not sure how much work they are. I'll be looking forward to watching you with yours!
