Old School Marm's Musings & Observations
Monday-September 22nd-2008
Last week the children and I went for a
nature drive on the country roads that
surround our house. We observed a large
white herron, two fawns crossing the road in
front of our van, cattails growing in the
ditches, and the Osage Orange tree with it's
large horse apples. The children and I were
amazed at the abundance of wildlife we saw as
well as the wide variety of plants and trees.

Yesterday, we took our nature walk down the
the dirt road that we live on. I was so
surprised at how many wildflowers we
discovered in the ditches and several we had
not even seen before! We were excited at the
number of deer tracks we saw, especially the
tiny fawn tracks. We even came across
some wild plum trees with ripe fruit on them!
I brought some back with us, we washed them
and ate them...yum, so sweet and juicy.

Today, the children and I foraged for Lamb's
Quarter during our nature walk. I cooked
the leaves tonite and we all thought it
tasted like a mixture of spinach and
mustard greens. I have to confess I was a
a bit apprehensive about eating a weed.

Recently I have been reading more about
edible plants and foraging. While gaining
a greater admiration for the pioneers and
Native Americans due to their ability to
utilize the flora for both consumption and
medicinal uses, I can't help but ponder the
mortality rate due to eating plants, stems,
or roots that were misidentified or not
properly prepared.

This morning I noticed an Eastern Fox
squirrel busily eating a mushroom on our
front lawn. While watching the squirrel, I was
amused when it pulled the stem up and out of the
ground, sat back on his haunches and proceeded to
nibble the stem all up. The squirrel did it so
neatly, I halfway expected him to pull out a
handkerchief and dab at both corners
of it's mouth!

My desire for us as a family is to be more self-
sufficient. We are discussing purchasing a dairy
calf next year with the intention of it being our
source of milk in the future. Self-sufficiency sounds
great, but do I really want to milk a cow?
