I'm feeling good! OK...enough about that!!!! Today flew right by. I am thinking the first grade curriculum is too easy. We did the 2nd grade Summer Bridge book with him, and know the 1st grade stuff is finished in minutes. I will be adding to my lesson plans over the weekend! Thursday August 9, 2007 Well, I woke up late today! The funny thing was, after a while I didn't care much! Last year when I woke up late and we had to drive 20 minutes to school, I freaked out! I would be frantic and on the verge of a meltdown to get to school by 8:20! This morning I woke up at 7:40, and for a moment I thought...Oh no I'm late....Ugggghhhhh. Then I thought.....wait a minute......it's ok.....relax.....you don't have to be anywhere.....it's OK!!!!!!!!! I felt this huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Now there is no pressure in the morning! I don't have to scramble every morning to make a sack lunch and drive him to school. I decided to wake my son up a half hour later today in honor of our new found freedom, and we both schooled in our PJ's!! It was kind of fun! Today's Lessons: Handwriting: Worksheet on writing the letter d. ( because his handwriting is sloppy) Then write all the words you know that start with d. Reading: We took turns reading Chapter 4 of Flat Stanley. Then he read The Big Red Stop Sign. Grammar/Phonics: Word Flash Cards. Then 3 worksheets on letter families & nouns Math: Lessons 6,7, & 8 in book. Art: Paint pictures using Nouns, Living Things, & Gods Creations (from this weeks lessons) |

Wednesday August 8, 2007 Another easy day. We started at 8:55 and ended at 11:15. I wonder if I'm doing this right!! We worked so hard this summer, that now I believe he is at the 2nd grade level for math and grammar. Handwriting is better...not great...but better! Reading: We started reading a new Clifford book. He had trouble with the big words. We will work more on that Thursday. Grammar/Phonics was easy for him today. We worked on nouns again. Math......I am looking into doing triple lessons each day. It is just so simple for him. He can do the basic addition and subtraction. We will start working on double and tripple digit problems soon. And last but not least we had Social Studies today where we learned about families and made a family tree. Today's Lessons: Handwriting: Worksheet on writing the letter c. ( because his handwriting is sloppy) Then write all the words you know that start with c. Reading: We took turns reading Chapter 3 of Flat Stanley. Then he read The Big Red Stop Sign. Grammar/Phonics: Word Flash Cards. Then 3 worksheets on letter families & nouns Math: Lessons 3,4, & 5 in book. Social Studies: Learn about families & make a family tree |

Tuesday August 7, 2007 Today went by so fast!! I went to my sons room and said 'Time for school', and he got up and went to his desk! How easy was that!!! We started at 8:50 and finished at 11:15. Handwriting: He is learning that if his handwriting isn't readable, I will make him write it again. Writing is about 20 minutes for him. Reading: He read BGTS again because there were a few words he struggled with yesterday. He read it more fluently today. Grammar/Phonics: He knows most of the 1st grade words, so we will be adding more 2nd grade words to keep it more challenging. Math: The math was too easy today. We will probably do 3 or 4 lessons Wednesday. Science: We started Life Science today and created a lap book on living things. He loves making the lap books! I will have to come up with some for next weeks lessons. Today's Lessons: Handwriting: Worksheet on writing the letter b. ( because his handwriting is sloppy) Then write all the words you know that start with B. Reading: We took turns reading Chapter 2 of Flat Stanley. Then he read Biscuit Goes to School again. Grammar/Phonics: Word Flash Cards. Then 3 worksheets on letter families & nouns Math: Lesson 1 & 2 in Book. Science: Living Things Lap Book |

Monday August 6, 2006 Today was the first day of first grade. I laid out his shorts and shirt for school, but he chose to wear a clean set of PJ's instead!! We were supposed to start at 9:00 but he wanted to start after breakfast (8:40). So, we breezed through handwriting, reading, and grammar/phonics. I gave him a test for Math to see where his weaknesses are. And we created a lap book for History on Gods Creation. When we finished the set curriculum he decided he wanted to read the state map I purchased. Then my son went to play his computer game! We told him he could play after he finished school every day. What a motivator! He likes to play Zoo Tycoon. He can create his own Zoo from the ground up. It really makes you think about what animals need to live and be happy. We also started our Virtual Flat Stanley Project. Tamara over at Training Hearts is hosting this. If you have read the book, this is a great project for your young one. Today's Lessons: Handwriting: Worksheet on writing the letter A. ( because his handwriting is sloppy) Then write all the words you know that start with A. Reading: We took turns reading Chapter 1 of Flat Stanley. Then he read Biscuit Goes to School. Grammar/Phonics: Word Flash Cards. Then 3 worksheets on letter families. Math: Test 46 Addition & 46 Subtraction problems. History: Gods Creation Lap Book States: Look over US map and learn where states are. |

It has been about 8 months since my last entry. I have been researching, purchasing books, and planning for this school year. I am happy to say, that after a lot research, I don't have any 1 teaching style. I am little Classical, a little Charlotte Mason, a little Textbook, and a little bit of everything else it seems! I started homeschooling on the 6th, and we just finished our 1st week. I have been posting on blogger and will post here as well. I love the togetherness of Homeschool Blogger. I feel at home here!! I will post last weeks blogger posts when I get a chance. Melinda

One of my BIG questions is what curriculum to use. Textbooks, lapbooks, make your own, non curriculum, ect. How do you know what to use? How do you know what will be best for your child??? I have done a lot of research about my school district and found that at the end of the year my son will have to take a test to move to the next grade level. That worries me a little. Do 1st graders test well in a formal setting after being home schooled? Anyway, any advice from the homeschool world would be great.
