Curriculum?????

One of my BIG questions is what curriculum to use. Textbooks, lapbooks, make your own, non curriculum, ect. How do you know what to use? How do you know what will be best for your child??? I have done a lot of research about my school district and found that at the end of the year my son will have to take a test to move to the next grade level. That worries me a little. Do 1st graders test well in a formal setting after being home schooled? Anyway, any advice from the homeschool world would be great.
