Socially Acceptable and glorifying God, part I

SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE

Whatcha thinking, doing the things you do
Whose opinion are ya listening to?
Justifying, you turn it all to gray,
Synchronizing to society's ways.

Society has gotten to be all outta whack,
Don't bother with excuses whether white or black.
To blame it on a color won't get a result
Because history reveals to me how ethics were lost.
In reality our decency has taken a plunge,
"In God We Trust" is an American pun,
Funny how it happened so suddenly, yo fellas, kick the melody...

Socially acceptable, it's okay, it's alright
Socially acceptable, it's okay, in whose sight
Socially acceptable

Times are changing, with morals in decay,
Human rights have made the wrongs okay.
Something's missing, and if you're asking me,
I think that something is the G- O- D.
To label wrong or right by the people's sight,
Is like going to a loser to ask advice.
And by basing your plans on another man's way of living life
I is creating a brand of ethics sure to be missing the punch,
No count morals that are out to lunch.
They're sliding away 'cause everything is okay,
It was taboo back then but today we say, "What the hey."

Socially acceptable, it's okay, it's alright
Socially acceptable, it's okay, in whose sight
Socially acceptable

We gotta back to the principles found in the Word,
A
little G-O-D could be society's cure
From the state that we're in 'cause again we're slipping,
So pray for America cause time is ticking.

I gave in to *cough* peer pressure... or something... and started listening to DC Talk.  Actually, the truth is that I heard and liked some of their songs, but excuse me, I digress...

OK.  The song Socially Acceptable is a cool one!  Because Jesus said, "you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world".  (John 15:19)  So we need to be consciously thinking about NOT being of the world!  If soldiers went into battle thinking that they were part of the very army that they were supposed to be fighting against, there would be disasterous results.

So... wanting good material to back up this vague idea about what's socially acceptable and how much of that is dishonoring to God, I pulled out my notes from last year at camp.

From the Pastor who was teaching us about Christian contentment:

Reasons for Contentment:

  • You live in a society which breeds discontentment
  • Your nature is like Gollum
  • To navigate your circumstances
  • Because the world is watching
  • And there is nothing more beautiful!

Unfortunately, I don't have time to go into detail on all of these, or all that he taught us throughout the week.

But he also said this... back to the Westminster Shorter Catechism...

Contentment glorifies God and gives us joy.

He was right.  Our society breeds discontentment -- with everything!  If your marriage goes wrong, jump out of it.  If you don't feel like cooking dinner, go to McDonalds.  Etc.

Christian Contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit which freely submits to and delights in God's wise and fatherly disposing of all things.

It is the ability to reckon with one's circumstances by the light of God's Spirit.

It is the ability to understand that all things work for the good of God's elect.

In every moment of your life, you're encountering God.

All of your experiences were tailor-made for you!

Now that's a cool thought!

So... what is God teaching you?  What is He teaching you at home?  If your parents are jerks, He's teaching you patience and maturity.  If they are good and rigorous, God is giving you the opportunity to learn wisdom, discernment and understanding from them!  If your friends betray you, God is teaching you to have compassion.

God has made all of your circumstances for your life, for your benefit!  God loves you!  (Rom 8:28)

He's NOT safe... but He's good.

He's even shaped that great circumstance - your death.  Even in that, He's teaching you.  He's not going to abandon you.

So there are part I of camp lessons from 2005, about contentment, which is VERY opposed to what is socially acceptable.

Whose opinion are you listening to?

Now, as if that wasn't long enough  I started making a list of movies that I want to see... sometime (like when I don't have 3 million other things planned!)

Fellowship of the Ring

The Two Towers

Return of the King

The Island

Glory Road

The Great Raid

Lady in the Water

Have you seen any of them?  What are your reviews?

We watched Episode VI of Star Wars tonight

while Mom and Dad were out on a date.

I was thinking about the hype over how New Age-y Star Wars is, and yes, New Age thought is a real danger to the church today.  However, I think that the original trilogy had very little New Age-y, and has many Christian themes.  Especially of redemption.

When the Evil Emperor is trying to get Luke all mad, and Darth Vader "senses" that he has a sister, and threatens to get Leia to turn to the Dark Side, Luke does indeed get mad.  He gets very, very mad.

<--- wonder where he inherited the temper from?

But anyway, I don't think that was anger leading to the Dark Side.  I think it was very proper, jealous anger of a brother for his sister!

But back to the redemption thing... really, the series winds up with the purpose being to save those who are thought unsaveable... remind anyone of Amy Carmichael and the Untouchables?  Or... of Jesus saving us?

That while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Luke also exhibited a willingness to die for what he knew was true.

Here is a Star Wars character quiz I found on Curufinwe's blog...

Goodnight!

*goes to practice lightsaber fighting*

BTW, does that remind anyone of Sword Drills?

Oh yeah, we had a pastor at camp who told us that he was going to have us do a Sword Drill.  I, knowing what a Sword Drill is, completely failed... because I knew what a Sword Drill was.

Grr.

He didn't know all the rules... have your Bible in the air, holding it by the spine, and don't start until you're told to DRAW!!

Worldview II

(For the questions, see my last post)

The Renaissance

1.  Whatever you want Him to be... an intruder.

2.  Whatever it is, man's the center.

3.  He's number 1!

4.  Watch out for #1.

5.  All those jerks who get in the way [of me doing my own thing]

6.  Huh?  Death?  Oh, well, if you want to know about that, check with the Church.

7.  History?  Duh.  The glory of man & me!

The Reformation

1.  Yes.  He is holy.

2.  God made it, orderly.

3.  Made in God's image, fallen, redeemed.

4.  God's law.

5.  Man's sin and God's will.

6.  Heaven or hell.

7.  To teach us.

The Revolutionary Age

1.  Reason is god.

2.  "My logic"

3.  logical or dead

4.  Reason

5.  Chaos

6.  Huh?  Maybe gets swallowed into something better.

7.  My good.

-.-.--.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

It's kind of frightening, because I think the worldview which I see the most of now (outside of people in the church) would fall under the Renaissance worldview!

Steve Turner (yes, you're probably sick of me quoting him, but I think he has awesome points!) has another great poem... Creed.

    Creed

      We believe in Marxfreudanddarwin.
      We believe everything is OK
as long as you don't hurt anyone,
to the best of your definition of hurt,
and to the best of your knowledge.

We believe in sex before, during and after marriage.
We believe in the therapy of sin.
We believe that adultery is fun.
      We believe that sodomy's OK.
We believe that taboos are taboo.

We believe that everything's getting better
      despite evidence to the contrary.
      The evidence must be investigated
And you can prove anything with evidence.

We believe there's something in horoscopes,
      UFO's and bent spoons;
Jesus was a good man just like Buddha,
      Mohammed, and ourselves.
He was a good moral teacher although we think
      His good morals were bad.

We believe that all religions are basically the same -
at least the one that we read was.
They all believe in love and goodness.
They only differ on matters of creation,
sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.

We believe that after death comes the Nothing
Because when you ask the dead what happens
      they say nothing.
If death is not the end, if the dead have lied, then it's compulsory heaven for all
      excepting perhaps
      Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Khan.

We believe in Masters and Johnson.
      What's selected is average.
      What's average is normal.
      What's normal is good.

      We believe in total disarmament.
We believe there are direct links between warfare and bloodshed.
Americans should beat their guns into tractors
and the Russians would be sure to follow.

We believe that man is essentially good.
It's only his behaviour that lets him down.
This is the fault of society.
Society is the fault of conditions.
Conditions are the fault of society.

We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him.
      Reality will adapt accordingly.
      The universe will readjust.
      History will alter.
We believe that there is no absolute truth
      excepting the truth
that there is no absolute truth.

We believe in the rejection of creeds, and the flowering of individual thought.

Worldview I

And now for something serious...

I was cleaning out files today and came across my study guide from when our Sunday School did How Should We Then Live? by Francis Schaeffer (a confusing title if ever I heard one).

Anyway.  In the front of the book I had written David Quine's questions for analyzing worldview...

1.  Is there a God or gods?  If so, what is He (or they) like?

2.  What is the nature of the universe -- its origin and structure?

3.  What is the essential nature of man?

4.  What is the basis of morality and ethics?

5.  What is the cause of evil & suffering?

6.  What happens to man at death?

7.  What is the meaning of history?

They are very helpful question to apply to anything, book, movie, whatever, or to ask a friend!

I then used them partway through the series to analyze the different worldviews he was teaching about, as well as to sum up what it was I learned!

So...

The Roman Age

1.  There were many gods, made in the image of man, with very limited control.

2.  Mother Earth

3.  Basically good

4. Watch out for #1 (and society)

5.  Disobedience to the gods - or the gods' wishes.

6.  Hades or the pleasure fields.

7.  History?  Oh, yeah.  The glory of Rome.

There is also a quote from Francis Schaeffer which I wrote in the front of the book:  "If there is no absolute by which to judge society, society is absolute."

Now THAT is a frightening thought!

Chance

If chance be
the Father of all flesh,
disaster is his rainbow in the sky,
and when you hear

State of Emergency!
Sniper Kills Ten!
Troops on Rampage!
Whites go Looting!
Bomb Blasts School!

It is but the sound of man
worshipping his maker.

~ Steve Turner

That seemed very relevant with all of the bad news coming from the Middle East!

But God is absolute, and has given us absolutes in the Bible.

And that is definitely good news.
