• Nov. 8, 2009 - Flash back: Honeyville

While on the mainland this summer, we stopped by Honeyville in Durango, Colorado.  What a cool place!

They have an active hive in the store where you can see the various stages of honey making.

You can also watch as they prepare the jars of honey.

• Nov. 6, 2009 - Weekly Wrap Up: November!

Well, it is the end of the week again.  Time for the weekly wrap-up.

Our week was pretty good.

Monday we got around to doing an art lesson again.  It has been a while since we did one, but it worked out well.

On Tuesday, Miss Twinkle Toes and I made some no-sew fleece blankets.  There are quite a few expectant mothers in our church, as well as many people out of work, so a group of ladies at church are making blankets to give away.

Here I am cutting material.  And yes, that is a Christmas tree up in the background!
Miss Twinkle Toes and her blanket.  She actually stayed in her pajamas until almost 3:00!

On Wednesday, we stopped by the aquarium again.  It had been a while since we saw the baby turtles.

The garden eels got fed while we were there.  This is the farthest we have seen them out of the gravel.

Cool picture of a moral eel.

This is a cone snail on the hunt.  This is a venomous predatory snail that can actually be harmful to humans.  The extendable siphon is used to spear fish and inject a venom that eventually degrades the fish's tissue and nervous system.  There is currently no anti-venom, so beware!

Incredible colors though!

The rest of the week included playgroup- a birthday party, violin (only 2 weeks til the Christmas recital), and gymnastics.  Busy, busy, busy.

A happy late birthday to my mom!

And last, but not least, an update picture of our shy birdie, Melemele.

• Nov. 1, 2009 - What to do with the Halloween Stash?

November 1, 2009

Happy Late Halloween to everyone.  We had a fun time last night.

Hubby carved the pumpkin...

The kiddos got in their costumes.  I got a serious picture...

And a silly picture.

Here are BearLover's and Miss Twinkle Toes' decorated pumpkins.

Hubby took the kids trick-or-treating around the neighborhood for about an hour.  Then we headed to our church's fall carnival.

Right at the end they announced they would be giving away all the remaining candy!

A mad scramble for candy....

Miss Twinkle Toes' haul...

BearLover's haul.....

As a way to encourage the kids to not eat a ton of candy, I buy their candy.  It is usually $0.10 a piece, although good chocolate candy- like Reeses, Snickers, Twix- may be worth more (LOL).  I think I am going to be out a lot of money when we count it up!

• Oct. 29, 2009 - Weekly Wrap Up; More Water Fun

It's that time of the week again- time for the weekly wrap up.  Please stop by and check out other homeschoolers' weeks over at Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

October 30, 2009

Well, we ended up with a week of playing in the water.  I know- it's rough living in Maui.  LOL

But this week has been pretty busy too.  I figured out that the kids would be out until at least 9pm six nights this week.  We aren't really strict about bedtime, it is more of a guideline.  Once we read and say prayers, the kids can listen to CDs or play a video game or read books (until 11pm- yes we know you do Miss Twinkle Toes!), but we do try to have them in bed by 8:30.

So this week we had AWANA, and church, and a Halloween movie night with a friend, and of course, Halloween, and a make-up gymnastics class, and our church small group.  Whew!!!!

Earlier this week, the kids watched American Girl: Felicity.  So Miss Twinkle Toes decided to make herself a bonnet.

Yes, it is a paper plate!

So playgroup was at our friends' pool.  BearLover has become very brave this week.  After going under water earlier this week, she suddenly started jumping in the pool!

She looks like she is walking on the water.

And Miss Twinkle Toes with a friend on an donut.

Thanks for stopping by the blog and checking out our homeschooling adventures.  We love to get comments too.

• Oct. 29, 2009 - Pumpkin Patch

October 29, 2009

Ahhhh, fall- my favorite season.  I love the fall colors, the changing of the leaves, the crispness in the air, wearing snuggly sweaters.  I vaguely recall what that is like.  You don't get much fall here in Maui!  There are no trees to change  colors.  As for crispness in the air- not much.

However, we do have a pumpkin patch!  So we headed up country to Kula this week to gather some pumpkins.  (In Hawaii, whenever you go up away from the water in the mountains they call it up country.)

My kiddos tried to pet the chickens, but they were a little nervous about it.

Miss Twinkle Toes thought the wool samples felt very soft.

Searching for the perfect pumpkin...

Success!

• Oct. 27, 2009 - Our Monday Meanderings

October 27, 2009

Well here is what we were up to yesterday.

BearLover and Miss Twinkle Toes watched the movie Spirit- the animated one about the horse.  Turns out there is a drawing lesson on the DVD.  So Miss Twinkle Toes decided to give it a whirl.

The finished product:

At lunch time, the kids begged me to take them to the pool.  I thought, okay- I would rather go to the pool than the beach today.  (Turns out that statistically, the month of October has the highest rate of shark bites for Maui- and a surfer did get bit at a beach close to our house last week.)

Now I have not one mermaid, but two.  This was actually the first time that BearLover was really going under the water.  Mask on- but that is fine with me!

BearLover above the water...

BearLover below...

I don't think I actually got a picture of Miss Twinkle Toes above the water!

Fish number 1 and fish number 2.

Finally, the best underwater handstand...ever!

• Oct. 26, 2009 - Horseback Riding!

October 26, 2009

Here is another post about some of our summer activities.  This was in July on our trip back to the mainland.

While we were at my parents' cabin, we went on a horseback riding adventure.

BearLover got to ride a retired Girl Scout Camp horse named Cooper.

Here is Miss Twinkle Toes giving Cooper a pat.

My horse's name was Today.  He was a pretty pinto.

Here is Hubby telling Today to be a good horse and not to make me too saddle sore!

Today had such soft pretty ears.

Miss Twinkle Toes' horse was named Dodge.  He was very gentle and easy to lead.

Here we are heading out on the trail.  I was at the end of the line.  Hubby's horse was named Tom. He liked to go to the left.  They warned me that Today liked to nip the horse in front of him, so it was my job to keep him from taking a bit out of Tom!

Ride'em, cowboy!

Today was a horse after my own heart- a snacker.  Every time we slowed down, he was getting a mouthful.

Yay, we made it!  It was perfect weather, overcast and cool.  We got some sprinkles, but mostly just listened to the thunder on the trail.  It was a fun trip for all!
