• Jun. 30, 2009 - Three Weeks and Counting

June 30, 2009

Today makes three weeks that my Dad has been in the hospital.  There has been some progress, but then we have a set back.  He seems to have recovered from the stomach surgery, and they are hopefully going to be taking the staples out today or tomorrow.

They were treating him with a blood thinner to take care of the clot in his leg.  Unfortunately the amount of blood thinner way over shot the optimal level, so they have had to take him off it and try to counter with vitamin K.  Since they stopped the blood thinner, my Dad says he has more pain in his calf.  So something is going on with the clot even though the levels of medicine in his blood stream should keep the clot dissolving.  They will run another test on it today to see if things are changing with the clot.

My Dad has been trying to get off the I.V. pain medication in preparation for being at home.  He hasn't been experiencing a lot of pain, which is wonderful.  But because of that, we haven't been very vigilant about keeping the amount of pain medication in his system stable.  We keep forgetting to request the medicine.  So that is still getting settled.

The doctor has slated him to be released from the hospital tomorrow.  Hopefully after they look at the clot, they will still have the same opinion.  It will be a big relief to get back home for everyone.  My brother will be coming back tomorrow, which is a good thing, since I am heading home on Thursday.  He will be able to help get my Dad situated at the house.

Bless you for spending time with your dad. I hope he is settled home soon.
I'm a fellow homeschool mom with four kiddos. We use a mostly CM method with our schooling. Although right now we are just reading and playing outside.
