Living on Maui: Waimoku Falls
October 5, 2009
These are pictures from our hike from last week with Mr. J, who was visiting us from Washington, D.C. Quite the weather difference for him, and a 10 hour travel time.
Our hike was along the Pipiwai trail, located on the south end of Maui, in Kipahulu. At the bottom of the trail, you have the Seven Sacred Pools, also known as O'heo Gulch. There aren't actually 7 pools, and the only reason they are called sacred is because the guy trying to advertise them thought it was a catchier name than O'heo Gulch.
At about 1 mile into the trail, you find the Makahiku Falls. I posted a picture here. These falls are about 185 feet tall, and you can't actually see all of them, since the path is fenced off from the steep cliff into the valley.
Halfway up the trail you enter a bamboo forest, with tall beautiful bamboo. I posted a video of the wind blowing through the leaves here.
At the top of the Pipiwai trail, there is Waimoku Falls. This is a spectacular 400 ft water fall. It is a 4 mile hike round trip, and definitely worth it! It takes forever to drive to Kipahulu, but this hike is worth the effort- I would rate it as one of the best on Maui, and we have done quite a few.
Anyway, now on to some pictures....

A Banyan tree on the trail...

Can you see Miss Twinkle Toes and Mr. J on the bridge?

Mr. J standing in falls at the bottom. He is more than 6 feet tall.
And of course, Miss Twinkle Toes and BearLover getting in the water of the stream down from the falls.
