Need help with LLATL

Posted in Our lessons

I started looking through to plan the kids LLATL programs... So, now I have a few questions.  Any advice, I would surely appreciate.

We have 7th - green, 6th - tan, and 1st - blue...

First, dictation... I realize that dictation means to read aloud and they write from what you read.  Do you do this?  the 7th grade level only has 12 lessons for the year of dictation, where the 6th grader seems to have this at least once a week.  Can you give me any suggestions, or how this has worked for you?  I have a 6th grade boy who is a reluctant writer.  Just seems like this will be torture for both of us.  Could he do this as copy work or would that be going against the purpose?

Secondly, 1st grade - She is not reading.  We had started "Teaching your child to read in 100 easy lessons"... is this going to cause confict?  We just finished lesson 16 today... Should we quit the 100 easy lessons?  Or should I continue that and hold off on the LLATL?  We haven't started school... I had just been doing this in our free time and when we were able to.  I really like the method of 100 easy lessons.   I thought I was prepared and found that I'm now more confused.  I'm a little worried because I have never taught anyone to read before and I want to make sure I do it right.  Last year we tried Hooked on Phonics and we just wasn't making much progress with it.  My older two were in PS up to 3rd and 4th grades, but I have found that they really are lacking in phonetic skills.  Their spelling is not good... but making progress.  They are in 6th and 7th grade and I still have to tell them sound out your syllables.  Could be genetic... their dad and grandpa are both terrible spellers.  I'm just hoping to make this easier for the youngest one.

Any other advice I could get would be greatly appreciated.  This is only our second year to homeschool them... we tried a cyber school their first year out of the PS.  Last year, I felt we were lacking in grammar, spelling and math... So, I really want to work harder in those areas this year.

I have been enjoying learning with them...

Well I loved hearing about your porch!! My dream as well and it made me so happy for you.
I ended up canning 22 quarts of peaches today and freezing some. In total I have now done 42 quarts and 4 pints of canned, 7 quarts frozen, and 13 half pints of jam... And this is just from one tree. We have 2 more that aren't ready yet. And they are going to be donated at this point!! I am done with crazy peaches.
Thank you for the material, I got it and it was so fun to see!! Can't wait to work on my project.

I found your post via a Google search for LLATL. This will be my first year of using it, too, although I have homeschooled for about 12 years now. I bought it for my 13 year old daughter, who I believe will do well with it (Grey book) and for my almost-11 year old son (Purple, for 5th grade) but I still am deciding whether to use it yet or not, as he is a slower learner.

I think my son will struggle at first with the dictation too, but as I look through the lessons, there is not a lot to do each day (compared with some of the other programs I've used) so the dictation at the first of the week, with the spelling test and vocabulary (I think; I don't have the book right here) is all that is covered in one day, and so that doesn't sound too bad to me. I think that as we get into the swing of it, it will get easier, and I imagine that as time goes on it will be easier for your son too.

I'm looking forward to starting using it; it does look like a good program and I'm sorry I didn't learn about it earlier.

I do appreciate your concerns - I think that lots of us worry whether we're getting it right in matching curriculum to child! We can trust that the Lord will direct our steps, though, as we sincerely seek Him and His will for our children.

all the best,
Karen
