Yesterday I was on my way down our driveway to get the mail. I had noticed a hole in the side of the bank, that I hadn't seen before. The ground was all scraped around it.

As I looked closer, I could see yellow jackets flying around it. My curiousity was aroused! Inside the hole, there was a huge yellow jacket nest. I've never seen anything like it before!

It was interesting.... nah, it was amazing! It just makes me stand in awe of our Creator. The detail. Wow.

Something obviously got after this underground nest. Pieces of the hive were laying around on the ground.

Inside of the hive pieces... the larvae was squirming around. (eewwhhh!) dd13 found this to be disgusting. ds12 thought it to be very cool. dd7 just stood back and didn't say too much. Here is a picture of one close up.

This morning, when the kids went down to take the mail this is what they found:

DH works with an exterminator. His guess is that it was a skunk that got into this hive. He said that skunks like to eat the larvae. Apparently, the skunk came back and got what was left over. I still believe that there may have been more to the hive further into the ground. Looking at it closer... there are holes that go back into it. Makes me wonder if there are more "rooms". Absolutely amazing! |
