The Road Less Traveled

The Lord has been using others to remind me to be thankful for the blessings that He has provided for me and my family. Some of this has come from reading other blogs. Some of it has come from reading articles in the news. There are so many families enduring difficult, even devastating, circumstances! People watch or have watched their children suffer and/or die. Some families have children who know that they will lose a parent to a terminal medical condition. There are families in such dire financial straits, that they can't feed their children adequately. What reason have I to complain? You know, I have been doing a lot of it lately.
I feel compelled to count the miracles that God has produced in my family's lives. I cannot consider these things and continue to feel overwhelmed or anxious. I am reminded of a car accident a few years back. I, my oldest (then 18 months old) and my uncle were forced off a highway at 65 MPH. My SUV flipped several times. It began the flipping process in the air and made its first landing on my side of the truck. Having the steering wheel to hold onto, I was able to hold my head down low enough to not get my head smashed or my neck broken. My oldest was on the right side in the back seat. The hard top came flying off, leaving him completely exposed. My uncle, despite having nothing to hold on to, was OK (relatively speaking). No other vehicles were involved (the person that caused the wreck, fled). None of us sustained serious injury, though the wreck was so bad the truck was crushed like a tin can. My uncle and I had a great deal of cuts and bruises, and I sustained mild neck damage that was easily corrected. My son only suffered one small bruise on his head and another on his back. The Lord took care of each and every detail. If even one aspect of the wreck had gone differently, the results would have been disastrous. So many people who are involved in these types of crashes don't make it. God spared us, and we owe him our deepest gratitude.
I also remember that my youngest was born not breathing. He had inhaled meconium and had to be revived. God could have allowed him to have serious complications and wind up in ICU. He could have let my son die. Instead, the Lord spared him. The medical staff were able to take care of him on the spot. I owe Him for that.
We have a home and land for the kids to play on. We have heat for the winter and air conditioning for the summer. We live in a country that allows us to homeschool our children. We have grocery stores packed with food, medical care when we need it, ample clothing, the freedom to make changes in our government, the freedom to express our opinions in public, ample literature on any topic imaginable...
The list is inexhaustible. There are so many other blessings that I could write about. I won't, because my kids are getting jealous of the computer. My almost-three-year old has interrupted me two hundred times to use the potty, and my six year old has been whining about anything that comes to his devious little mind. Now they're biting each other- gotta go! |
