Some GOOD news

Posted in Noah Updates

You all have NO idea how glad I am to be able to share some GOOD news tonight.  We saw the Infectious Disease doctor earlier and she told us that the strain of staph in Noah's blood is very sensitive to antibiotics - in other words, it is not resistant to them.  What does this mean for Noah?  It means that certain antibiotics are shown to kill this strain of staph, so IV antibiotic therapy should clear up the infection.  He is already feeling better today and had a very happy time earlier today.

I know last night's blog entry was scary, and things got even worse as the night went on.  Noah was just so very sick.  The infection around his line got worse and in the middle of the night he got hypothermic even though he was sleeping in bed snuggled up to me.  This can indicate septic shock, so we had an eventful and nearly sleepless night.  As morning approached his temp hit normal levels and we both slept for a while.  It was wonderful to see him wake up looking better than when he had gone to sleep, and it was amazing to see him visibly improving as the day went on.  This day could have ended much differently.

Noah is still a sick baby and we once we get past this crisis, we still have to deal with the original set of problems, but this is our top priority right now.  There is still one big hurdle for Noah in terms of this infection.  His Broviac is very nearly gone.  There is a cuff under the skin that holds the catheter in place, and because the tissue is so infected and inflamed, the cuff has come out.  There are two stitches left holding the catheter in place, but they are slowly tearing through the skin.  You could literally say that this Broviac is hanging by a thread!  One of Noah's antibiotics can only be given in a central line, not in an IV, and his TPN (nutrition) can only be given in a central line.  If Noah loses the Broviac completely, he will lose his food and one of his two antibiotics.  The plan is to get him a new PICC line as soon as possible, then pull the Broviac.  Once the tissue on his chest is healed and we have a good grip on his infection, he will get a new Broviac.  They might do that here or they could do it in Philly.  (Looks like we are heading there, but don't have any dates/details.)  The ID doctor wants Noah to get a radiographic PICC line which is done in radiology under sedation.  The doctor can use ultrasound to locate a deeper, larger vein than could be found by sight and feel.  There are three specialists that need to be there for this procedure and because it is Sunday we don't know if they will all be working tomorrow, and we can't get him on the schedule.  We are proceding as if he will get this tomorrow but were told that Tuesday was a more realistic goal.  It is IMPERATIVE that he get this PICC before we lose the Broviac.  We have seen everyone's prayers at work with this infection, and now we need them for his line.

Noah is a very needy little patient right now, but he is getting incredible care.  I told one of his nurses that she needs to request a job transfer to Philly because he can't go without his girl friends.  I am sure there are great nurses in Philly, but the care he is getting here will be pretty hard to beat.

Gonna go snuggle my sweet baby Noah.  I know he would thank you for your prayers if he could, and I believe that some day he will.

Love,
Kate and Baby Noah

My whole family has been praying for sweet Noah, and I have his button on my blog, and after last night's post, I was crying, because it really felt like we were going to lose him. Praise God for His tender mercies! Give Noah an extra kiss from the Brigham/Raabe Family in Maryland. What a fighter he is!

We prayed again for Noah last night. Praise the Lord for the good report. The Lord loves our children so much more than we do; they are all in His loving hands. Keep trusting and leaning on Jesus and we will continue praying for you. May the Lord's peace, joy, and love continue to fill your hearts as you draw near to Him. He is so good.

Praise the Lord Kate! Praying now for his Broviac to hold until he gets his new PICC line. Our very large SS class prayed for you this morning, and it is so encouraging to read that his infection is not as serious as it could have been. Thank you Lord. Praying for good rest for both of you, and clear direction and wisdom as you all care for him and treat him.

Blessings,

Oh I am rejoicing, rejoicing, with tears running down my face! I truely do not believe I have ever been able to "pray without ceasing" like I have for Noah!! It is only because Noah and my son seem so similar. Although our sons health issues are not so severe as Noah's. Our son just had a g-tube put in 10 days ago and our time in the hospital just put you and Noah on my mind continually. Our boy is only 6 weeks older than Noah and just the happiest baby I know. So all yesterday, thru the night and today, every time I looked at him I thought of Noah and just cried out to God on his behalf. I am so very happy to hear he is feeling better. After just a few days of pain for our little guy my heart has been so heavy for Noah and the pain he is experiencing. I have been praying, praying, praying for him to be relieved of his pain. My heart aches for you as you spend this time away from the rest of your family. I only had to spend two weeks in the hospital and the seperation was hard. I thank God He has sent you people to minister to you!!!!! I will continue to pray for Noah and your whole family as you go through this transition of hospitals. I am sorry this is so long. My heart is just overflowing with happiness that his infection will be beat.

Praise God! We prayed for little Noah this morning at church. I took a picture of him (ofcourse, the most pitiful one of him posted on the blog last week) and shared it with my Sunday School class. What a relief that this Staph can be treated with antibiotics! God is good, all the time! Also, what a blessing this blog is! Thanks to all of the bloggers all across the United States who read, pray, and share with others for the sake of little Noah. Kate, I am sure that you could never have guessed that Noah would have so many fans! He probably has a handful in every state of this country by now! I encouage bloggers to keep posting your states so we can know that Noah is being prayed for in every state! Blessings to all, and especially to little Noah, Mom, Jeff, Hannah, Matthew, William, David, Sarah, Timothy, and ofcourse, Baby Girl Estes!!! (Can you believe I named tham all from memory?). Sleep well Kate and Noah!

I am very pleased to hear that the prognosis for the staph infection is good and that Noah had some happy time today.
You said that you were possibly going to Philly. If you need a place to stay, please contact the Ronald Mcdonald house. I worked there many years ago. It is a very safe and supportive atmosphere. When I was there, there were 2 family suites that were larger than their hotel style rooms. There was also a large comfy living room, community kitchen and play room.
The Ronald McDonald house is located within walking distance to Children's Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
My prayers are always with you.

We continue to pray for Noah, you, and your family. God bless you and keep you in His loving arms. We pray that the Broviac holds until they can do the PICC line, that Noah continues to recover from the infection, that the doctors identify the cause of Noah's pain and control his pain, and for the nurses caring for him.

When I told our family that there was GOOD NEWS from Noah, my 4 year old dd went just ballistic running around the house saying, "There is good news about Noah! There is good news about Noah! He is getting better! He is getting better!"

We are so thankful that God has mercy on Noah and he had happy times today.

Ah... I am a Pittsburgh girl myself, but I guess they know what they're doing sending you to Philly, but Go Pirates! (Don't tell Jeff!!)

We continue to pray for healing and God's hand on this special little guy, Noah. (My first ds (3rd dk) is almost 11 months so I regularly pray for Noah every day.)

I feel such a burden for you as a mother or four myself. A friend of mine who home schools sent me this blog. I have prayed for you before and will continue to do so.

I have only had minor surgical things go on with my four children (ear tubes and mishaps, hernias). But I spent 7 years in and out of Drs and surgeries after a wreck I had. I know you are ready to be done with this and have your baby safe at home. After my 7yr valley, the Lord had done such a great thing in my families life that I look back now and see all that he had been working on and of course understand. I refer to myself now as being a "Paul". I do still have afflictions that sometimes get me down, but oh how the Lord has delivered me from the mosh I was in! We are closer to him than we had ever been.

I pray that his work through your family touches many more lives. It has ours and I have never even met you.I also pray for healing. Think of the witness to the nurses and Doctors you are bringing.
Stay strong in the Lord for he loves us and knows all. He is working through you and touching many lives.

It's not that this just happened to be good news, it's that God chose this for you because hundreds of his people were praying for it. He is so good and so gracious and his love is more then we'll ever comprehend.

My niece loved meeting you last night! Steak out was not being very co-operative, so I'm thankful God allowed her to help!

I'll see you this evening. A friend of mine is coming with me. She was a nurse practitioner before she became a mommy, so I readily accepted her request to come with me tonight!! :)
