Update from Kate
Posted in Noah Updates
|
Boy, have I missed updating! I don't know how long Noah will stay distracted, but I have a lot of news so I will try to keep it simple.
First, Noah once again has an infection in his blood stream - probably staff, but we will know more later. He is back on heavy-hitting antibiotics and is feeling and looking very sick. We don't yet know if this is another antibiotic sensitive bug or if it is resistant. This is a serious matter. Every little thing that happens to him keeps taking a bigger toll because he just doesn't have any reserves left and is pretty weak.
Noah had a g-j tube conversion yesterday which didn't go as well as the doctors had hoped. They had to use a much smaller tube than they wanted (greater chance of clogging) and couldn't go in as far as they wanted (greater risk of the tube backing up). Their difficulties were due to Noah's abnormal anatomy. He also had his brain MRI. He got highly agitated during the tube conversion and required the absolute maximum of sedating drugs he could have, so it took him a very long time to come out of sedation.
Last night the doctor started a slow feeding drip into the j part of his new tube. Noah had an extreme reaction and was very sick all night. His face stayed contorted with pain and he couldn't stop rolling and thrashing back and forth. He also vomitted on and off all night. First the doctor stopped his feeding for an hour, then stopped them altogether, but Noah couldn't settle down until 5:30 this morning. I don't think I have ever seen him suffer so much and for so long. Nothing anyone did would comfort him as he cried and gasped and clutched his belly as he rolled around. Every so often he would collapse and fall into an uneasy sleep for a few minutes, then he would start right back up again.
X-rays taken first thing this morning showed that his new tube was already starting to back up toward his stomach, so he was taken off immediately to have it put back in place. He will start receiving feedings through it tomorrow. I believe an x-ray will be taken to confirm placement of the tube first, so that if he doesn't tolerate the feedings we will know that it is because he can't handle feedings directly into his small intestine, not because of a placement issue. If he CAN tolerate the feedings, but the tube won't stay in place (unlikely for it to stay in place long due to his history and anatomy), then a surgically placed j-tube may be the next step. This isn't a great option for Noah because it always carries the risk that the small intestine will twist around the tube. Noah's unusual anatomy puts him at a higher risk for that sort of problem, which is a serious medical emergency. If he CAN'T tolerate the j-tube feedings, then we are probably back to a very small amount of feeding through his g-tube plus continued TPN. This isn't a great option because the TPN will destroy his liver. There are no other real options right now. Please pray for some sort of good resolution because Noah seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. He can't live without nutrition, but every attempt to provide him with nutrition carries a major risk of one sort or another. You don't know what I would give to just hand my little guy a PB&J and a cup of apple juice!
Noah has seen a lot of specialists and has had a lot of testing. There are more tests in the works and I will try to fill you in on those later.
Now it is my turn to post a video of a song that is very special to me. This is a band called "Big Daddy Weave" and I have actually met these men because they used to lead the worship service at my dad's church in Florida before they started touring. I really hope that you will listen closely to the words because I agree so much with everything they say. When I listen to this song, it is as if they are singing the words that describe how I feel. I hope it is as much of a blessing to you as it is to me.

Kate, It is 12:02am, (my husband works nights), and I have checked my e-mail 3 times tonight just waiting and on my one last check before heading off to bed I was blessed to receive your update. My heart aches for you and Noah. But the Father knows exactly where you are and what you both need. You and your family come to mind multiple times a day and I remember to pray for you all. You are such a Godly example! May the Lord continue to strengthen and sustain you and Noah as you seek answers for his long term health. May the doctors and nurses be provided with wisdom and insight from God as they seek to treat Noah.
Know that you are prayed for and loved by your brothers and sister in Christ here in KY!

I'm so glad you had a minute to update us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Noah. How you must understand the Father's heart as our Lord suffered...
May He comfort you all as only He can. And may His people be couriers of that kindness.
May the Father grant the doctors wisdom, strength and ability beyond their natural abilities. May He show Himself a compassionate God .
Pat that little daughter for me and remind her she is loved.
give Noah a kiss and tell him Jesus loves him tenderly.
thanks
Monique
I hope someone from 10th Presby. has been by...a classmate from Wheaton, Phil Ryken, is the pastor there and he thought some of the folks from his church worked at CHOP and may be able to stop by....

Kate,
Thank you for the update. Earlier my daughters (ages 9, 5 & 2) were asking if I knew anything new about "the little boy Noah." They have asked this at least once a day since you went to PA. But we completely understand when it is long between updates - you have much more important things to take of there - Noah!
We are continuing our prayers for you, Noah, and the doctors in PA and the rest of your family back home.
Thank you also for the link to the video. I do not think I have ever really listened to the words before.
Love & Prayers,

Praying for your precious little guy tonight, as I do most nights (& most mornings)! Makes me shake my head in wonder at how our God can supply the grace to endure such suffering. May the supply be abundant tonight as you both try to rest, and may you continue to receive it with such great faith, Kate. God, bless little Noah and the angels who minister Your love to him moment by moment, in Jesus' name & because He lives! - a friend in Oklahoma

I've been listening to a CD by Don Moen that has some songs on healing. It's a good reminder for me to pray for Noah while on my way here or there in the van. We are praying for healing and for the grace to endue what God has chosen. The story of Job comes to mind and the intense suffering he endured. At times it seems unbearable to be asked to go through these trials. We know of course God's grace is sufficient, but that doesn't ease the pain of it all. We miss you and pray for you daily!

I forgot to sign my name to the last post Kate! Sorry. I guess I can blame it on the coke I had at 8pm last night--it's 2:25am and I've not gotten to sleep yet. But it's a good time to pray for you!

Kate,
It is so good to hear from you. I appreciate Jeff's update's but have missed yours so much. Poor little Noah! I am praying that God will reveal himself in all of this everywhere you look. My little Sunday School class has been praying for Noah each Sunday and the children alway ask about him before I can even mention his name. Joy
Heavenly Father,
God bless Kate, Jeff, Noah, and the children at home. God bless the nurses, doctors, specialists, and the friends that come to visit. God grant wisdom where wisdom is needed. God provide comfort where comfort is needed. We can not be all things at all times, but, God, you can. Please be there for Kate and Noah at CHOP. Be there with Jeff and the children at home. Be there this morning with the churches who pray for Noah. Be in the homes where plans are made to bless this family. Thanks you for this day, for your love, for your faithfulness. Fill us all with the Spirit of You that others may see you in the reflection of us.
Amen

Thank you for taking time to update the blog, Kate. I am sure you are just exhausted. I will be praying for healing for Noah, and for discernment for the doctors in making decisions on the best way to get nutrition into Noah.
Thank you for posting the video. It blessed my heart.

That is all I can say to describe your wonderful family. I love that song you posted, but this time when I listened to it from your point of view, all I could do was cry. You and Jeff have really been a blessing to me personally and have taught me so much about being grateful and thankful even in the midst of difficult times. Please know that not a day goes by that my kids (and my entire family) don't pray for Noah and the whole Estes family. Our church is praying as well and asks for updates every week. God is using you all in an amazing way! Blessings,

Kate,
We are still praying daily for you and your family.
A friend of mine, whom I had not forawded the blog to said that it was forwarded to her, and she in turn sent it to others. It is amazing to think of all of the brothers & sisters in Christ flooding Heaven for your precious Noah. May God overwhelm you, Jeff, Noah, and your other dc with His comfort and peace and joy. Continuing to pray for baby Noah, Kate, and all of you as you hang on to Jesus through these tough days.
Yes, the clips you shared are blessing me too. I hadn't heard them before. I listened to a lot of Michael Card, Keith Green, & John Michael Talbot when Tom was in ICU. Does help to praise God and talk to Him while we're going through our valleys of testing. Sure am glad that we can hear great praise & meditation songs like these to help us keep that focus. God bless you all!

Dear Kate and Jeff,
You have both blessed us with your music video postings, with your lists of blessings in the midst of your trials, and by allowing us to pray for Noah and his family. We pray that God will nourish Noah and heal his infection, that He will guide the doctors and nurses in caring for Noah, and that He will give you rest and strength.

Becca and I are in tears tonight as we pray for you, Jeff, Noah and your family. We were talking about how wonderfully and marvolously (sp) Noah was created in God's image. And how God is holding him in His arms as Noah tosses and turns. We pray for comfort and healing for Noah, and strength and comfort for you and Jeff and the rest of your family.
BTW, did you post earlier sometime about Noah's abnormal anatomy? We have read posts back to the beginning and cannot recall that being explained. If it is none of our business, we are hushing up.
But if someone can direct to us to a post about it, we will appreciate it.
Loving you in Christ,
Marti and daughter Becca
