Difficult news
Posted in Noah Updates
Last night the doctors came and and said that preliminary labs were showing that Noah has a UTI (urinary tract infection.) He was looking much better by this point and was no longer running a fever, so we had every reason to think that he could go home on IV antibiotics as soon as today.
This morning when the doctors came back in, I was surprised to be told that they had bad news. The doctor said that Noah's blood cultures were showing an infection in his line and in his blood. I thought that was the bad news, then he said that the bad news was that the infection was not a staph infection like he has had before. Instead Noah has a gram negative infection that is very difficult to treat and does not respond well to antibiotics. It appears that the UTI had very rapidly spread to his bladder, then kidneys, then his entire blood stream.
The gold standard of care for this type of infection is to pull the line as soon as possible, treat until the blood is clean, then put in a new broviac. This is the safest and most effective treatment plan, but because Noah is on his third broviac and is still so young (and his life depends on the broviac), the current plan is to save the line at all costs. He is being treated with aggressive IV antibiotics, but it is very possible that even once the infection is cleared from his blood, some of this bacteria will cling to or coat his broviac. This turns the broviac into a sort of time bomb that will produce another infection at some point. If he does get another infection from the line or if they cannot clear up his blood, he will simply have to have a new line.
Also, Noah's anemia is getting worse, so he will be having a blood transfusion later this afternoon.
We want to say how incredibly thankful we are that we caught this when we did. Noah only ran a fever for a few hours, and if he had run a fever while he was sleeping or if we were doing errands and he was in the car, I never would have noticed it. The infection would have declared itself at some point, but Noah would have been much sicker by then. Once again God is showing Himself faithful even in the very hardest times.
Thank you all so much for your prayers. Please ask others to pray for sweet Noah as well.
Love,
Kate

Father, please heal little Noah in Jesus name. Heal his body from this infection. Please strengthen the family to be able to do all that is needed to care for him. Please surround this family with a ton of brothers and sisters to share this burden, and lighten the load for this family. In Jesus name.

I know Noah was nursing awhile back. Can he nurse again? Can you get banked milk or colostrum? Would it help his immunities? I know you've probably already looked into this...but couldn't not ask. Prayers for all of you.

Thank you, Lord, for placing Noah at the hospital at the right time!!
Please place your awesome and mighty Healing Hands on dear Sweet Noah - he needs you very much right now. Be with the drs. as they make decisions for Noah. Please, Lord, put someone in Noah's path to take charge of his situation with fresh and new ideas - if need be! I am so sure that Noah is so tired of being sick - please give him the strength to get through all of this. Please, Lord, be with the family - put their minds and hearts at ease right now. Help the younger ones to be patient! Give strength to Mom and Dad and what they are going through!
Bring this family home together soon!
Amen!
Hugs and Blessings from the Kiessling family from Fresno, California
