Canned the apples!
Posted in Noah Updates
Thank you to all of you who prayed for my apples. :-) Some friends came over Friday and we canned exactly 50 quarts of applesauce - 11 from their apples, 39 from mine. It worked out so well. I could provide canning equipment that they didn't have, they provided extra hands, and we only made a mess out of one kitchen! Hannah (14) and her friend Annie helped a lot and learned a lot, and Matthew (10) and his friend Andrew did lots of muscle-building work for us. We had two hand-cranked food mills and the boys especially loved pounding down the apples with a pestle and turning the crank. At the last minute we realized that the clamping mechanism for the mills wouldn't work on my table, but Matthew recently built himself a fairly large solid wood table for his Lego projects. He cleared it and brought it to the kitchen for us and it worked like a charm.
I also had two dear adult friends Shannon and Rachel with me helping, as well as Rachel's husband who is Costa Rican and doesn't speak English. I don't speak much Spanish but we all had fun trying to communicate with each other.
Noah was quite obliging and easy-natured as usual. He fell in love with Rachel and was happy to take some play breaks with her. Whenever he would get tired I would put him in my Ergo on my back and he would go to sleep right away. I must have been a sight with a sleeping baby on my back balancing out my pregnant baby belly in front LOL. He also enjoyed just sitting in his high chair in the kitchen and watching the VERY busy goings-on.
As soon as we got the kitchen cleaned up (as big a project as the canning LOL) we had to rush about and clean ourselves up. Our church hosted a Michael Card concert Friday night and we finished at home just in time to get there. The concert was truly amazing and we were very blessed to be able to spend some time speaking and visiting with Michael Card both before and after the concert. I just wish I had thought to bring my camera to get a photo of Noah with him! Noah loves music and did some pretty impressive baby dance moves and clapping to some of the songs.
Noah seems pretty stable right now. He has been fighting a yucky cold and the home nurse was a little concerned about RSV, but the cold seems to be improving so I think it was just actually a plain old cold. His new larger broviac is clearly bothering him. He has never messed around with his broviacs unless they were infected (in fact, that has been our first warning sign each time!), but he rubs this one and cries a good bit. I'm not about to take him to the ER based on "he's rubbing his broviac" but I am keeping a very close watch on it and watching for any signs of infection such as a fever. I hope that whatever is causing him so much distress will improve quickly.
We had big plans to go to a picnic with some friends from out of town on Saturday, but ended up with a plumbing problem (leak) that took up the entire morning. We were all so disappointed that we couldn't go. Jeff was working which is unusual for him on a Saturday and the dc were extra blue because Daddy wasn't around. They all had been given the gift of a little spending money and Jeff suggested that I blow their little minds and take them to Toys R Us to go shopping. Hannah is the only one who had ever been there (1 1/2 hr drive!) and that was years ago. It was so fun to see the looks on their faces when they realized that this entire store sold just toys. We spent hours in there as they agonized over their purchases. There is a fairly large mall next door to Toys R Us and Jeff had told me to go in and see if I could find some maternity tops. I have some skirts but only one long sleeve dress and only two long sleeve tops, so I really did need to find some things. Well, the big two-story mall was just as amazing to them as the toy store. Again, they had never seen anything like it before. I felt like the country mouse visiting the big city with them LOL. I found some nice tops on sale, but I do think that someone needs to open an Advanced Maternal Age Clothing Shop for those of us graying pregnant ladies who don't want to dress like we are twenty years old! I kept wondering why so many of the maternity shirts seemed a bit longer than usual until someone pointed out that they were DRESSES. Oh my. I was also able to buy a few things for Noah with a Baby Gap gift card he had been given. Cute, cute, cute. I could have spent a lot of money in there!!
Many of you have asked about the Ukrainian mission that I posted about before, and I'm sorry I didn't put up more info sooner. I got the contact info right before Noah was admitted, then didn't really think about it for a few days. The best way to get information is just to contact Noah's EI whose name is Joy. She can give you specifics on how to help. Her email address, which she gave me permission to post, is joykinard@yahoo.com . We had scheduled a blanket making day with friends but it fell during Noah's admission. We have the fleece all washed and ready to go and plan to get the blankets finished this week.
Lots of you have asked for pictures, and I do have a lot of current ones. I'm going to do my best to get some up on the blog this week.
Love,
Kate

Hey apple friend! I am so glad all of this worked out and am glad to hear of your happy times! I just wish we'd have been apple picking, too! (Just to meet you and say Hi!) Hope you got my emails and didn't think I ignored your lovely hospitality! I got my friend's big meal made(She just had number 7 and that is why I thought I better not pick apples; it was a big meal to make, but well worth it to hold the newborn!)
Hope you got to use the apple activities on the website I sent. We always make apple prints and make cards out of them.
God bless you all and we're keeping you all in our prayers!

It's so nice to hear such homey news--canning apples, Michael Card concerts, Toys-R-Us trips. We are all happy that Noah is doing well, and will pray for this new line. My children were all hanging over my shoulder as I read the update, and the boys are terribly excited about Matthew's Lego table. ("Do you mean he has Legos? Wow!") And I know what you mean about maternity clothes. I was 38 with my last baby. She's almost 7 now.
God bless you all,
Belynda

I'm so glad to hear Noah is doing better again and you've actually had some time to do some fun things as a family. I can't believe you were able to get the apples canned! It's amazing all the little gifts God gives us even when we are going through hard times, isn't it?
Glad you enjoyed the Michael Card concert - he's been one of my favorite musicians since I was in college (longer ago than I care to remember!). :)

I'm so happy to hear that Noah is doing well and that you had the extra hands from your friends and were able to can all of you apples making light work of it : ) Sounds like a wonderful day out with the children shopping to. I can just imagine how difficult it must have been for them to decide what to spend their money one. I know my son has a very hard time because he wants to get the best bang for his buck usually *grin* Continuing to lift you and your family up in my prayers.
Hugs,

What a blessing to get those apples finished! It sounds like it was so much fun to be able to work with others while accomplishing this task.
I'll be praying for Noah that his broviac no longer bother the little guy.

Sure sounds like things are getting back to normal?!?!?!?
God is awesome!!
Thank you -Lord - for helping Kate and her friends get her apples done!!! What a big relief.
Good to hear that Noah is doing better. And sounds like you are doing good, too! Maybe having the broviac in his arm - though it is the only place for it to be right now - is a little more visiual to him and maybe be that is why it bugs him?? Just a thought!
We will pray that he is not going to get any infections. Lord willing - good health and strength will see him to the end of this and he will be bugging his sibs so bad!! He will be there soon! I sure felt at peace when you hadn't updated since the hospital.
Can't wait to hear more good news!

Kate,
As always, thanks for sharing!!
I have a tiny load of apples to can myself! I'm a bit more motivated to get it done after hearing about your day!
I was just wondering if you'd be willing to share what size (generally) you are for clothes... I know there are a ton of us out here who have clothes we'd be willing to part with! I would love to keep my eyes open for items you would need. - JA in CO

I tried to email this, but it was returned. Here it is for anyone who wants it!
Kate, Sorry I didn't send this to you earlier. DH just remembered to tell me you

Sometimes I'll double the sauce to make it extra moist.
3 TBS butter or margarine
3 TBS all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper

6 rib or loin pork chops (3/4 ")---or whatever is on sale! :)
2 TBS veg. oil
6 C thinkly sliced peeled potatoes (about 4 pounds)
1 Med onion, thinly sliced
In a saucepan, melt butter; stir in flour, salt and pepper. Add chicken broth;
cook and stir constantly until mixture boils. Cook for 1 minute; remove from
the heat and set aside. In a skillet, brown pork chops in oil; season with
additional salt and pepper if desired. In a grease 13x9 baking dish, layer
potatoes and onion. Pour the broth mix over. Place pork chops on top. Cover and

<snicker>....that reminds me of the 'dress' my mother gave me when I was pg. with my first....I did not even have a belly yet, and it hit me mid thigh....It had been one of hers when she was pg with me, and she is 4 inches taller than me and wore it in late pg....I don't know how....They need to get a ready made maternity shop for those of us who wish to be covered up....regardless of age.

I believe you met Michelle Johnson and her son Daniel at GHS recently and she told me about your blog. Thanks for sharing your life with us. I will be in prayer for your family and Noah as you search for answers. Our daughter has Battens disease, a lysosomal storage disorder. It took us a while to find a diagnosis and not knowing is hard. You can learn more about her at www.smoaksignal.com. We have two arrows in our quiver and that is full enough for us! I admire you for holding it together with all of yours.

Hello :)
Oh this was a joy of post to read, believe it. Could almost smell those apples burbling away on the pots, and the happy chatter in the kitchen.
So glad your apples were saved and you had a such a great day with friends getting it done.
Wonderful to hear about the Michael Card concert too. I have never had the honor of seeing this amazing brother in person, but I love his music and have been blessed by his cds for over a decade now. That is so very cool! :)))

I have been dropping by every now and then to see how Noah is doing ever since I found out about his struggles through the ebook sale benefit a while ago. I have been praying for you all, and will continue to do so.
My husband and I love Michael Card, his music is so wonderful and just draws me right to the heart of God. I am glad you had such a wonderful time with him.
