In the hospital - but hopefully not for long
Posted in Noah Updates
Sorry to have taken so long to update. We got to the ER at about 6:30 last night but Noah and I didn't get to a room until 3 AM. Things went about as we thought they would - the doctors ordered blood and urine cultures and admitted Noah for observation while the cultures have time to grow out. If they are negative in the morning we should be able to go home tomorrow. Noah clearly doesn't feel very good, but this could just be a mild, simple virus. The problem with having a broviac (especially with Noah's history of infection) is that any time Noah feels yucky and has a fever with no obvious cause, he has to be tested and admitted just in case.
Even though Noah slept all afternoon yesterday and most of the time that we were in the ER, he didn't wake up this morning until after 11 when the doctor had to examine him. I didn't bring up the laptop last night but Jeff and the dc came up shortly before lunch for a visit and brought it to me. I had a nice long visit with them then Noah and I both took a nap. I didn't get to bed until 4 this morning and of course had a doctor come in to check Noah before 7 AM - not enough sleep by any measure! When I woke up from my nap I realized that I never had blogged to update everyone - I am sorry if this caused any worry.
I really do think Noah is fine and will go home tomorrow. His temp has gone up but returns to normal pretty quickly. It is always still possible that something will grow out in his cultures tonight, but they were negative last time we checked. I'm so incredibly thankful that it looks like this will be a short, uneventful hospital stay!!
I'm also thankful that I had a really great day with all of the dc on Thursday. Little 4 yo Sarah has been enchanted by the fact that all of the leaves are turning colors and falling. She is too young to remember that this happens every year, so in her mind something amazing is happening. She's right, of course, but it is too easy to take these sort of wonders for granted. Thursday was pretty chilly, but we all bundled up and went for a leaf walk. The children all had fun trying to gather as many shapes, colors, and sizes of leaves as they could, then spent the afternoon making leaf placemats by sandwiching their finds between sheets of clear contact paper. It wasn't any big elaborate or fancy thing, but it we all enjoyed ourselves immensely and the placemats are truly lovely on our table. I was thinking on Thursday that I really didn't have the time to do all of that, but one thing Noah has taught us is to really and truly cherish every moment and every simple thing. I quickly realized that I didn't have the time NOT to take the time to do this with the children, because we never know what tomorrow will bring. I am so very thankful that we did do this and that I'm not sitting up here wishing I had just taken the time.
If we won't be going home tomorrow, I will be sure to update as soon as I can. If we do go home, it may be evening before I have time to update. Thank you all so much for your prayers. Please do pray that no matter what is wrong with Noah, that he will feel better soon. He just seems sad and listless most of the time with little perky bursts here and there.
Love,
Kate

Dearest Kate :)
I'm happy to hear that Noah seems to be doing the same and nothing has gotten worse. Praying for him that it is just a little flu bug and that he will start to feel more like himself quickly and that the Lord will lay his healing hands on him :)
Thinking of and praying for you and your entire family.
Hugs,
Rosina

Your posts are always so sweet. I'm glad to hear that Noah's doing okay~ I'll be praying that the Lord will heal whatever is causing his fever and you all can come home soon and be together...especially as Thanksgiving is right around the corner. You are always so thankful even in the midst of your storms, but I know it would be a great blessing to be all together at home during the special day we celebrate Thanksgiving.
How I miss the leaves that turn colors~ we have one season here...hot. Well, maybe we do have 4- warm, very warm, hot and very hot. :) Last year, a sweet lady from one of our supporting churches mailed me a box full of pretty fall leaves. Oh what fun we had making crafts with them...It really made our fall special. Yes, it is those little moments....those memories you make...that really are important and mean so very much. A good reminder for me tonight.
Thank you for updating. I will pray little Noah will get some good rest tonight so you can too :)
love,
Jaynee

Nov. 17, 2007 - Flying Leaves!!!

I'm so glad Noah's okay! I went on a walk with my siblings the other day, and one of my brothers was frantically scurrying around trying to gather all the pretty leaves that he could. It was fun trying to help him. His face would get so huge with excitement when I would show him one I'd found. "OOOOOHHHH!!! Where'd you get that one?!" It was quite a fun experience. At one point, he sat down on the sidewalk to try and get a thorn he'd stepped on out of his foot and he set his leaves down right before a HUGE gust of wind came. They were flying EVERYWHERE and we had quite a laugh trying to collect them all, running all over the place. We fully meant to put ours in contact paper before they dried and curled, but we didn't have any on hand and we haven't been to the store to get some yet. Hopefully we will soon!

I'm so glad to hear how you are all doing and that Noah may get to go home. I woke up during the middle of the night last night and prayed for you all again. Kate, I esp. prayed for a comfortable place for you to sit while you waited in the ER with Noah. We were in the ER Monday with our Jonah. (It was just a virus with a high fever, not pneumonia and he is better now.)
God bless you and your family,
Belynda

We are praying for comfort for Noah and a comfy, cozy Thanksgiving with all of you together at home. I've thrown in a few extra prayers during those quiet moments in the middle of the nights when I am up with the baby - it leads me to ask God to provide for you Kate when you will be caring for both Noah and Abigail in the long nights to come. God Bless!

Nov. 18, 2007 - Prayers for those who minister God's Healing Gifts
Posted by The Rev. Hugh Craig

Dear Kate: You do not know me. I am a priest
at St. James' Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas
and a friend of Colleen Waller and her husband,
Lyman Grant. Their two sons are very special to
me.
I pray for enlightenment for your whole family, to
understand and accept the current situation as a
blessing, albeit one of concern, sadness and love.
I am praying daily that those who minister to Noah
of God's healing gifts will be guided by knowledge,
skill, love and concern. We know that God is doing
more for Naoh (and your family) than we can desire
or pray for! I am always comforted by the words
of "Amazing Grace": "T'was grace that caused my heart to fear, and grace that fear relieved." God is ever present to us whether in the valleys or on the mountain tops. The free gift of God's Grace is always present.
With love,
The Rev. Hugh Craig
