Infection in Noah's blood
Noah was admitted very quickly after we arrived at the ER. (BTW, we got back home before he got sick, so he is in Greenville, SC in room 5502.) I am very sorry to say that he has been steadily getting worse. When we left yesterday he had a temp of 100.7 which is incredibly high for him. When we got to triage it was 101.9 and his pulse was over 170 (usually about 90). His preliminary labs indicated some sort of infection so he was started on two very heavy duty antibiotics at about 1 AM. One covered gram positive bacteria and the other covered gram negative. By this morning he was running a temp of 103 and having wheezing and difficulty breathing. We haven't been able to get his temp below 101 even with Motrin.
His blood cultures were already growing out some sort of gram positive bacteria this morning. Gram positive bugs are often found on skin and in the environment and include the various staph bacterias among others. Not too much later the cultures started growing out gram negative bacteria as well! Gram negative bugs are often found in the gut and include things like e. coli. Because his gut isn't working well bacteria can transpose out into his bloodstream. They haven't been able to identify the specific bugs yet so they are continuing both antibiotics while they do further testing. The fact that his cultures were growing out so quickly is fairly disturbing.
He just finished some breathing treatments so he has gone from lethargic and "out of it" to jittery and hyper. It is nice to see him alert even if it is just the result of the breathing drugs. We aren't sure why he is having trouble breathing. It is completely possible that he has a virus on top of two different blood infections.
I will try to update when I can or get Jeff to update. As soon as these drugs wear off Noah will probably crash on my shoulder again which makes it tricky to do anything. :-)
Thank you all so much for your love, prayers, and support. God is here with us in this place. It seems harder this time, probably because Noah has never looked anywhere near as sick as he does now, but we are choosing joy and choosing to keep our eyes on the Great Physician right now rather than dwelling in fear.
Love,
Kate
