Thank you all for your prayers for us today! Noah's nephrology visit went well (as expected). Because of his recurring UTI's, we will be doing some kidney testing this summer to see if the kidneys have been damaged or if they are continuing to grow well. His kidney related labs generally look pretty good, so this isn't a huge concern but is something that needs to be followed up. After that appt. we all went to Target so some of the children could do some shopping for each other. Each year they draw names and each buy a gift for one sibling. They keep their identities secret and have a lot of fun doing this. While we were there, we saw a Lego set that Matthew has been wanting desperately but that has been sold out everywhere. His siblings didn't have a gift for him yet, so they were thrilled to buy the Legos. There was a great deal of sneaking and drama in Target today LOL. After Target we went to Whole Foods for lunch, and Matthew had tons of fun agonizing over all of the cakes in the bakery. There weren't any sheet cakes so he got the extra blessing of being able to choose TWO cakes! After great deliberation, he chose a chocolate yule log and a fruit tart. Next up was my maternal fetal medicine appt. The children all enjoyed the 3D ultrasound. We didn't get any good pictures because SOMEBODY insisted on keeping her arm in front of her face, but they got to see her yawn, stick out her tongue (at them??), and grab her foot. Such fun. She is still a little undersized, but is plumper in proportion to her size. Evidently letting my blood sugar run high for a couple of weeks helped, but I was honestly relieved to get permission to set my insulin levels higher again so I could get my blood sugar into a more typical normal range. The plan had been for me to start twice weekly biophysical profiles and nonstress tests in early January, but since the baby is still on the small side the doctor wants me to start doing them twice a week starting this week. Those of you who know me know that I am a real homebody and try to have as many days as possible when I never leave home. All of this running to Greenville and now twice-weekly visits for me is a big change! We came home after my appointment so we could celebrate with Matthew. The grandparents came over for pizza, salad, and of course the two yummy cakes. It was a nice meal and Noah even got a little bit of the yule log. Matthew enjoyed his gifts - the Legos from his siblings, a large magic kit from us (Jeff does "gospel magic" and Matthew is learning to be a real showman!), a neat physics kit from my mom and stepdad, a new bike from Jeff's parents, and a card with cash from my dad and stepmom. Matthew wanted to go shopping right away LOL but will have to wait. :-) BTW, my dad is home and they are working hard to get him to Switzerland for specialized radiation therapy. Please continue to pray for him that this will happen quickly. All in all, it was a lovely (if exhausting) day and we are so thankful for our sweet son Matthew! As my dear friend Marion wrote in yesterday's comments, Matthew was highly, errr, "challenging" as a tiny tyke. He pushed even his steely-willed Mama nearly to the brink of her resolve many times, but it has been an unspeakable joy to see our strong-willed child using his will for right instead of wrong (most of the time LOL). He is a smart, compassionate, affectionate, happy-natured boy who we are sure will go on to do great things one day! I wish I was going to be home to play with his new things with him tomorrow but look forward to hearing about the fun he had while I was gone. Love, Kate |
