No more antibiotics!!

Posted in Noah Updates

We had our appointment with ID today and Noah is officially off of his IV antibiotics!  This means the possibility of waaaaay more sleep for mommy.  It also means that he will once again be unhooked from all pumps for at least a few hours each day.  We will still be administering his IV benadryl as needed because his hives and swelling are still a significant issue, but TPN and IV benadryl seem like a cake walk after all of the antibiotics.

Of course, it also means that if our current 5 week streak of no line infections/sepsis was only due to all of his antibiotics, then he is at risk again, so this move calls for as much prayer as it does for rejoicing.   His fever is continuing to creep right up and was nearly at the point of no return at the ID office today.   Like I posted earlier, Monday's labs were perfect in terms of infectious markers so none of us are in a hurry to see Noah admitted, but we have all seen those labs change VERY quickly with Enigma Boy.  All we can do is watch and wait and pray.

I have a neat story to share, then I need to run.  About a year ago we got a wonderful Australian Shepherd puppy for the children.  Edison is a great dog, but he is ALL puppy and brought with him all of the work that puppies bring.  Since he is so high energy (and high chew and high bark LOL) we would have to kennel him every time Noah went into the hospital or to Greenville for the doctors - he just wasn't at the point where we could leave him at home all day.  We finally made the difficult decision that Edison needed a new home because he was spending SO much time at the kennel or in his crate, and that is no life for a bouncy puppy.  The children began to pray earnestly that we could find someone to care for Edison just until Noah stabilized or until we could move (planning/hoping/praying to move to some land this spring).  God answered those prayers in spite of Jeff's and my disbelief and a wonderful family with dog fostering experience is keeping Edison for us right now.

Well, the children have grieved and grieved the loss of this dog even though they know he will come home one day.  For one of our children it has seemed to symbolize all that we have gone through this year, and he has deeply struggled with not having a faithful canine friend to talk to.  He has been asking and asking for a dog that we could have now, and we have repeatedly said that it just wouldn't work - there is NO WAY on earth I could train a puppy right now.  We had to go to the pound this week to buy a cat as a gift for my mother in law, and of course this son asked again about getting a dog.  I told him that the ONLY kind of dog we would EVER consider at this point would be a small, older (not puppy), slowed-down, not bouncy, not barking, not chewing, housebroken dog - - -and that NO ONE gives dogs like that to the pound.  He said he was going to pray about it.  I guess I should have just bought a leash at that point LOL.  We got to the pound and he asked if he could ask about a dog like I described.  I felt confident enough to say yes, and Jeff and I were shocked when the pound lady looked at him kind of funny and said that they actually had one dog that fit that description perfectly LOL.  She brought out a 5 year old Jack Russel Terrier who isn't AT ALL hyper and who they have only heard bark ONE TIME (weird for that breed, I know) who went right up to this child, leaned into him, stared into his eyes, and started licking his face.  Jeff and I were stunned.   We asked every possible question that could "disqualify" this dog, and couldnt' find a single problem.  The dog played and cuddled with all of the children while making this particular boy his clear favorite.  He even let Sarah carry him around like a baby.  I still didn't think there was any way Jeff would go for it, and he made a big show out of saying that we couldn't have even a super low-maintenance dog right now.

Jeff fooled us all.  We knew he had to fill out paperwork for the cat, and I actually sat there listening to him do it - when all of the time he was filling out paperwork for the dog LOL.  He got the pound lady to say "cat" each time instead of "dog" so we wouldn't suspect anything.  He finally let me in on the secret later yesterday.  Jeff said that if God loved our son so much that He would provide the very specific dog our son was praying for, that he wasn't about to stand in the way.  The dc have named him Buddy and we will pick him up tomorrow.  They pooled their money to pay for the dog and went on a shopping spree at Pet Smart today to stock him up.  This won't make up for Edison, and we can't wait to get him back when we move, but it will give a hurting little boy a friend to talk to.  This is the child who has struggled the most with all Noah and our family have been through, and who has the least coping skills.  He isn't old enough or mature enough to really know how to seek out help from a family member or adult friend at church, and he is too big (or thinks he is) to just climb into someone's lap and cry like the little ones do.   We are praying that this dog will be a faithful companion and good listener.  :-)

I need to go take advantage of my new earlier bedtime (yippee!!).  We have a very busy day tomorrow with the dog arriving, the carpets being cleaned, and some other projects to do, so if I don't get a chance to update it just means we were too busy working (OK, it probably means we were too busy playing with the dog).  If Noah has to go in, someone will update right away.

Blessings,
Kate

Dogs are so special. I know right now we are fostering a puppy and I need to find her a home. It's so hard as we love her, but she is too much for our family right now to consider keeping. I think it's so wonderful you have found Buddy while Edison is away from home. How precious! Thanks for always sharing these sweet stories with us!

What a wonderful testimony to prayer and a boy's heart. Thank you so much for sharing Buddy's story with us. I'm a dog person and I know the unconditional love & snuggles that (sometimes) only a dog can provide (ok, sometimes a cat, too).

Prayers continuing for Noah... {{{hugs to you}}}

My daughter tells our animals so much - I always just give the dog and bird treats and attention when she is in bed and thank them for being cheaper than therapy and psychologists!

That is probably one of the most precious stories I have heard of in quite some time. What a blessing our heavenly Father is, to provide our every need!

I am so excited that little Noah is off his antibiotics! That is just so wonderful. Hopefully he will not need them again for a long, long time.

I am continuing to pray for little baby Mary and the rest of the children as well.
Love,
Kelly

Great job with the dog! JRT's are known to latch onto one person intensely--how cool that it would be him. They're very smart and loyal. We've had several in our family. They'll also hunt mice and chipmunks for ya!

The story about the dog made me cry. That is so sweet and wonderful! I love how the Lord is in even the small things, like praying specifically for a certain type of dog and getting that wish.

Happy to hear, no more antibiotics! Enjoy the sleep.

Blessings,

I'm so glad for the children, and especially Mr. Nameless, that Buddy has come to live with y'all. They are one animal-loving bunch of kids--I bet the excitement level is way higher than you would get from any high-strung puppy right about now. I love your careful wording as your children grow and have "too-big-for" issues--I sometimes consider anonymity in talking about my girls, but with just two, I think most everyone would figure us out in about three seconds--some things about our family are just way too obvious!
Praying for Noah as you test the waters of antibioticless (??) freedom! Love, Marion

I've followed your blog & Noah's progress the past year or so, & your family is always in my prayers.

Your Buddy story is so heartwarming. And WE have a Jack Russell named Buddy who we claim is the most LAZY Jack you'll ever find! Sounds like your Buddy fits the bill to.

God works in so many wonderful ways :)

I'm here with tears of joy! What a sweet story. We dog sat over the last week and dogs bring such warmth to the family. I'm so glad your son got his prayer answered. I love how you said you should just have gone out and bought the leash! lol

Thank you Father for giving us even the littlest things (huge to others) that bring comfort and joy!

I love the power of a child's prayers! I truly believe our youngest two living miracles are here (obviously by God's design) at the heartfelt prayers of their big brother. His first independant prayer for a sister, a brother and a bird. When I told him I was pregnant with Ruth he knew this was his sister and that she would survive to live birth (even through he was our only living out of 4 so far) and would get angry if we even talked about possible boy names because he was so sure this was the sister God was sending to answer his prayers!

The day we found out I was pregnant with our youngest, he was equally as sure that this was his brother and though we regularly reminded him that our unborn's life was in God's hands and we had no assurance of live birth, he again was firm and peacefully resolved that God had told him otherwise.

On the day home from our ultrasound (when the doctors proved what he had known all along, that yes we had another son), his obvious question was, "So Mom, when can I have a bird?" LOL Since his sister was born just after his 3rd birthday and his brother at his 6th, we told him he could have a bird for his 9th, so we will be bird owners in another year. :D

I TOTALLY understand about not wanting a high maintainance dog. When I finally got to a place where I would consider a dog I definately didn't want one that had to be house broken! I was DONE with diapers!! We did the Humaine Society (aka: the Pound) and were warned against that because you never know what you'll get. We found a wonderful Queensland Heeler (prob. had German Shepherd in her because she looks like a mini Shepherd) who was 7ish when we got her. She has been the best, most loyal, sweetest, communicative (w/o barking), mostly obedient dog!! -- and she isn't much of a barker - something I forgot to ask God for! She is so loyal to me that whereever I am in the house, she will follow and lay down next to me - even letting my youngest take a nap using her back as a pillow!
God is GREAT! and pound puppies are wonderful!

Thanks for sharing such a touching story. It brought tears to my eyes to see so clearly the deep Love of God. I love to see how he reached out to your hurting children - one son in particular. Just goes to show - He knows what we each need even before we ask - but He loves us to ask!

Hope you are having fun playing with Buddy today!

God From Whom ALL Blessing flow!!!

Grateful to hear that Noah successfully came off the antibiotics. Yes, there are sweeter nights sleep to coem.
I know the "waiting for the other shoe to drop" is something that is on your mind, it always is when you have a little one who is so high maintenence & has a cental line in place.
Praise Him here all creatures below......
The doggie story is a reminder of patience & the "just" reward. Even when we look for teh reasons "no to" god gives us the reasons "to go ahead"
Praise Him above ye Heavenly Host......
You & Jeff are doing a great job with ALL of your children, and for this He has/will continue to Bless YOU & will always look over you for every need you bring to Him!!!
Praise Father, Son & Holy Ghost.......

Thank You for sharing your Quiverfull!!!
