Working toward home

Posted in Noah Updates

Last night was a looooong night.  Noah needed his vitals checked constantly - as often as every 15 minutes at some points.  His nurse was joking that with a blood transfusion, Lasix,  two IV antibiotics, IVIG, TPN, benadryl, and labs all in one night that Noah was like the pretend patients they would read about in nursing school - the sort of insanely complicated ones that you never really expect to deal with in real life LOL.  He was a trouper as usual and once we were able to climb into bed about about 1:30 or so this morning he slept through everything.

He had a bit of trouble after the transfusion in terms of fluid and blood pressure, but the Lasix took care of that and he got rid of tons of fluid.  Unfortunately this morning he was again showing signs of mild congestive heart failure and is very swollen, so he just got another dose.  We are hoping that this will relieve the edema enough for us to continue with our plans for home!

I can't tell you how thankful we are for the fantastic care Noah gets here.  The nurses, doctors, techs, Child Life workers, and even the cleaning ladies and hospitality staff are all truly top notch.  They really care about Noah and he loves them all so very much.  Last night was quite a juggling act because of drugs needing to be given in certain order AND certain schedules AND so many of them needing pretreatment of one sort or another - not to mention the endless vitals checks - but his nurse was terrific and kept all of the balls in the air.  She even made up my bed so I could take sleeping Noah and just climb right in.

I'm going to try to grab a little nap with Noah if he will cooperate.  We've been walking the halls with him in his little red car most of the morning but I'm ready for a break.  :-)  If we do head home, I probably won't update again today but I will update if there is a problem of any kind.  I feel pretty confident that this dose of Lasix will do the trick and that we will be on our way.  They are calling for up to three inches of snow today (!!) and I so want to be home to see my children enjoy it!

Love,
Kate

Sounds like a busy night. I know what you mean about the nurse and nursing school. I am a nurse (I worked on a post surgical floor for 5 years before leaving in September to be home) and just reading all the different IV's and vitals...I can tell you it is quite the feet trying to get it all timed right. Kudos to your nurse last night...my hat is off to her. And to you too mom!! You are top notch!
Prayers heading your way. Hope the kids enjoy all the snow (ours melted : )

Jan. 19, 2008 - Get Some REST!

Posted by ichuzchrist

I hope you are able to go home today. So far it's only rain here, but they keep saying it will turn to snow. Not sure I believe it.

You sound like you are doing way too much, Kate. I don't know how you are going to handle both the baby and Noah once Mary Faith enters the world, but I know that God will provide the help that you need. Just don't push yourself so much!

Kate,

Just want you to know what an amazing testimony these posts continue to be. I have shared them with several friends. You've really helped me look at each day as a possible last one for the Lord, and it's impacting the way I parent and the perspective I'm striving to give my children. You are brave and so is little Noah.

Praying all the time for you,
Psalm40
Go Fred Thompson in SC today!!

Praise the Lord Noah has done so well. Praying you do get to go home today. Enjoy the snow. My children will be so jealous (LOL) since the last snow we had was January 2000!

Kate, I cannot tell you HOW MUCH I admire you and your faith!
I keep telling my husband how great it has to be to just KNOW in your heart that the Lord above will keep onces Children safe no matter what! I wish I could really start to believe that way! I do read every entry as soon as you post it and sometime last week I got the thought -Hey. I think Kate should go ahead and download all the blog entries and comments and really add some pictures, format it nicely and take it to a publisher and have it printed into a book. I would surely buy it as a book even if it is going to have a bitter ending but your wonderful example of coping with this all would be such a wonderful ministris for all parents and especially for parents that know what you are talking about and have sick kids themselves!
Okay, got to stop rambling, just wanted to let you know my thoughts!

Wishing you and Noah and baby Mary Faith a lot of sleep!
And the rest of your family a lot of snow to enjoy. we did not have any so far and maybe wont get any :(

Great big Hugs from Germany
