Enigma Boy Strikes Again!
Posted in Noah Updates
We are home - all of us! Noah's cardiology visit went well. His echo and his labs did not show any signs of heart failure - obviously good news. The other labs did not show any reason for his fairly dramatic swelling and puffiness. That isn't such good news because it leaves us not knowing what to do to help.
Because he is so puffy and swollen, there was a perception that his liver was being pushed out of place. It can be felt out of place and since severe edema can push the liver out of place, it was assumed to be the case. Some of his liver labs were slightly abnormal today and a closer look revealed that his liver can be felt out of place because it is enlarged, not because it is being displaced. This is a significant distinction, and the labs/enlarged liver are indicative of liver problems/damage from his TPN. We knew this would happen some day sooner or later. The doctors have been amazed that it hasn't happened sooner, but of course we have been hoping for much later. Liver tolerance to TPN varies widely from person to person and there is no way to tell who will do better and who will do worse, so even now we don't have any sort of idea what this really means for Noah . . . . except that the process of damage has started.
In summary, we have a very puffy looking little guy with an enlarged liver and who obviously just doesn't feel good, but there is nothing concrete that would justify hospitalization. He is going to have some thyroid tests run to see if thyroid problems are causing the swelling and weight gain, but the doctor suspects the tests will be normal and we are just seeing a case of "Noah being Noah." In the meantime, we are very glad to have him safe and sound at home with us!
We cheated a bit on his "house arrest" to take him out to lunch and to run into Babies R Us to pick up some spring clothes for him. He is VERY hard to shop for. He either needs shirts that snap at the crotch or one piece outfits or overalls and shirts - options that will prevent his shirt from riding up and exposing his broviac and g-tube. These are easy to find for little babies, but hard to find for size 18-24 months. Our local department store had some cute seersucker shortalls with shirts and my mom bought him one in each color. We were very tickled to find a few more suitable items in Babies R Us today! Pajamas are particularly difficult. One piece pj's in 18-24 month sizes ZIP, and that doesn't provide a way to run his line in and out. Two piece pj's can ride up and expose his tummy. I finally thought to look on eBay and found some Carter's 2 piece pj's where the shirt snaps to the pants. I don't think they make those in his size anymore (haven't seen them in stores or online expect in smaller sizes) but I was able to get several pair in 18 mo for now and 24 mo to save for later. It is a big relief to know that he has safe clothes to wear but am not not sure what we'll do when he gets bigger. Today at Babies R Us we saw snap-crotch shirts going up into toddler sizes. I don't know if they always carry them that big (never noticed them that big before) or if this is a new thing. I sure hope they continue to carry them.
Thank you so much for all of your prayers for Noah during these rocky couple of days. Please continue to pray with us that if it would be God's will that Noah would turn around or at least stay stable so he can stay home.
Love,
Kate

I'm so happy Noah is home. The Lord has been good to keep him out of the hospital since Mary Faith was born. I know it is hard not knowing exactly what is wrong, but better to be home then in the hospital, right? I will definitely pray for wisdom for the doctors and that Noah's liver would function better.
God bless, Laraba

Hello from a fellow MOMYS! I have been reading and praying for Noah for several months now. About the clothes, it's a little expensive but you might look at Land's End online. They often have one piece outfits and also snap together pjs into the larger toddler sizes. God bless your family!

Mar. 5, 2008 - snapping clothes

I'm headed up to the attic to see what I kept. I had a baby-baby who wore larger sizes (25 lbs. at 6 weeks, 36 pounds by nine months) and I know I got a lot of snapped shirts for him at the gap and all my kids had the snappy pj's (of course the kids are in their teens now and not even chubby anymore!). I was keeping things in case we had more kids or did foster care but Noah's need is much more immediate.
We think of you all and pray for you daily. In fact my 10 year old dd asks daily if there is any news from Noah and Mary Faith.
Wishing you days of normal joy and stress,
Cindee

Kate, we will pray for Noah and for all those caring for him. I'm thankful he can be at home with you all for now, and pray that he will turn the corner soon and begin feeling better.
I have always preferred snap crotch shirts/tops for my little ones well into the toddler years, and have had good luck finding them at The Children's Place. Do you have one near you? You can look online at www.childrensplace.com.

Praying enigma boy stays home for a long time.
Praying for wisdom for the doctors and you.
Glad you got to enjoy a day of shopping instead of admitting one to the hospital. Praying Noah's liver miraculously decreases in size. My unbelieving Mom has cirrohis of the liver (non-alcoholic/non-hepatitis) form. Looks like that will be my lot one day. Praying the Lord opens her eyes to the Truth one day. Glad to have Christ in our lives.
God is so good, all the time! Thanks for posting one of my favorite artists and one of my favorite songs of Rich Mullins. Hard to believe he's been gone for over 10 years. I must be getting old!

Kate,
We'll keep all of you in our prayers.
Here's a suggestion about the 2-piece pj's w/o snaps. If the size you need is unavailable with no snaps, it should be a fairly easy process to add snaps yourself. I can't sew anything to save my life, so I'm just assuming the ease on this project. LOL
Blessings,

Mar. 6, 2008 - Retrofitting clothes

Kate, it is not hard to do a little retrofitting of clothing. Someone with a snap press (like me!) can easily add a panel and good quality snaps to any tee shirt for pennies. Adding snaps to regular pj's or tees and sweat pants is easy too. I have done some retrofitting for a friend's 20 yr old severely handicapped son. You'd be welcome to contact me if I can ever help. so glad you are ALL home!
When our dd was tube fed, we were known to cut holes in the feet of footy pjs so we could thread lines through. this works best if the pjs don't fit snug. Or you could just cut the feet off of the pjs.
When I was looking for one-piece outfits for my guy, as pants fall off of him, I found some good lots of one-piece clothing on ebay.
I also did a quick search for special needs children's clothing and came up with

We'll continue to pray for Noah and all of you.
JC Penney (online) has a few bodysuits up to size 24 months. In an earlier comment, Jamie mentioned Lands End; I'd add that they have a discounted overstocks area on their website. Often they'll also have a free shipping code; a Google search will usually find the available codes.

Hi Kate and family,
We continue to pray for all of you. We have been doing this for more than a year now. My children like to read your posts and always ask me for Noah's health. Your faith and love for God have been such an inspiration for us. Your family is a wonderful example of Christian living. We love you.
About the clothes, maybe there is someone in your home church that knows how to sew and is willing to make some clothes for Noah, or someone who knows a lady that will be able to do it? Just a thought.
May the Lord keep showering you with His rishes and His wonderful blessings.

I'm glad you were able to enjoy another night at home as a family!
I see a lot of people have offered clothing advice. Just thought I'd share an idea that popped into my head... concerning finding pjs... if you continue to have a hard time finding two piece snap together PJs, an alternative idea is to buy sleepers and sew button holes on them wherever you need access for a line. It's a very cheap, easy fix (and if you don't sew, surely someone could do this for you... it only takes a few minutes). I realize that you might not be able to pass down clothing with strange button holes to younger children... but perhaps that's not a concern.
Praying for many more nights at home!

Mar. 6, 2008 - Zippered PJ's

Kate, do you have access to a sewing machine? If so, you could buy the zippered PJ's and install a large buttonhole, with the line capped, you could run it through the buttonhole, and reconnect it....access denied to one curious little boy, and fairly user friendly to mom....

Mar. 8, 2008 - Another idea for retrofitting clothing

Several moms had mentioned adding snaps, and I thought maybe adding buttons to regular 2-pc pj's might be a help? I know you don't have a lot of time, but it's a possibility.

Hi Kate,
This site was posted on a feeding tube loop I'm on. I'm not sure if these would work for Noah - but thought it was a great idea.

I hope you are able to find just the right clothing. It can be hard shopping with restrictions.

Mar. 25, 2008 - Snap Jammies and I'm a new visitor

Hi Kate and Family!
My name is Violet, I am from Marysville, Washington. I found your blog by default, I was checking out a friend of mines homeschooling blog and stumbled across yours as well. I have spent the last two days catching up on your blog, and have been really touched by your story. Not only have I been touched by yoru struggles with Noah and Gods amazing faithfulnees through it, I have been touched by the way you have chosen to lead your lives. I am 21 years old and was raised in a very complicated, unchristian environment. I however have chosen to die to myself so I might live, and both know and believe Christ is my savior and redeemer. At a young age I felt that God called me to raise a large, God fearing family. I have deep convictions about homeschooling, allowing God to determine how many children I will have, as well as adoption. I am currently waiting for Gods timing for a Godly marriage yet, in the meantime I know he is preparing and equipming to be the kind of mother and wife he desires me to be. I also know he has placed several families in my life as examples of what it can look like when God is the head of the house hold.
Reading your story and Gods faithfulnees in it, has only re-affirmed my own callings and passions.
I have been and will continue to pray for Noah, his parents, and each of his 7 siblings.
Some time I would love to hear the story of how you came to the decision that you would and should have as many children as God blesses you with. I am just curious, I know most peoples stories are different. I am always fascinated on how God chooses to orchestrate our lives.
I decided to respond here because of your jammie concerns. I nanny for a 2 year old little boy who has eczema, mostly caused by recently discovered food allergies. The doctor told us to slather him in cetaphil lotion, and dress him in full body 100% cotton jammies. Most jammies were mde with at least some polyester in them. If polyester is not a concern for Noah, I came across alot of snap jammies up to sizes 5 and 6. They were at Fred Meyers and a Carters outlet store. I know know if you have either of those stores in your state, however if in a pinch you may find them online. I hope this helps you!
Much Love,
Violet

My son had a colostomy for the first year and a bit of his life and we had the same issue, having to use onesies and such so his shirts wouldn´t pull up and expose the colostomy (he didn´t use a bag, only a diaper). We had some luck looking in second hand shops.
