Posted in Noah Updates

Noah made it through the night safe and sound.  He did wake up crying at about 3:30 but Jeff managed to get him settled into bed with us for the rest of the night.  By the time we got to the doctor this morning, his temp was down to 99.5.  This is a bit higher than it sounds since Noah's baseline temp is about 97.5 or so.
They drew blood for a CBC, CRP, sed rate, and blood culture, and pronounced Noah safe to go home -with the understanding that he would need to return immediately and be admitted if the blood culture grows out anything in the next three days.   I do think he is sick, but I really don't believe that the cultures will grow out anything.  He doesn't look septic to me at all, and he looks FAR better than I would have dreamed based on how bad he looked last night.

The GI part of the visit went well.  The bottom line is that Noah is NOT where we (our family and our doctor) want him to be.  The doctors had all planned for him to be on TPN as a supplement very short term many months ago.  None of us ever dreamed that he would still be on TPN and that he would be getting no tube feedings at all.  Still, having said that, Noah looks REALLY good.  He is happy and walking and looking like a sturdy little toddler.   Now that we know that we have a diagnosis, we just need to accept that Noah will, barring a miracle, probably always be dependent on TPN.  Even though the TPN is taking a toll on Noah's little body, he wouldn't be doing as well as he is doing if he didn't have the TPN.  Noah's doctor is really amazed at well he is doing on it - he had feared much more liver trouble much earlier.  Even though Noah's liver is being affected, it is very mild damage at this point.  The doctor really exhorted me to just enjoy Noah right now and to be thankful for how well he is doing right now - of course, we do and we are!

When we left the doctor's office we grabbed lunch and did a couple of quick errands.  I was all set to go home, but it was SO pretty and warm out, and Noah was looking perky, and we were oh-so-close to the zoo . . . .  so we spent the rest of the afternoon meandering around the zoo.  :-)  Noah had never been before and I just couldn't resist!   He certainly looked well enough to ride around in his stroller and get some fresh air, so I couldn't see the harm in going.   At first I thought we wouldn't make it.  He fell asleep in the car and stayed asleep even when I put him in his stroller.  After we all used the bathroom and I paid and we got to the elephants, I tried to wake him up - but I couldn't.  After about five minutes of trying VERY VERY hard to wake him I was starting to worry and think about things like calling an ambulance, but  right at the moment of decision he woke up.  I don't know what the deal was, but he did have me scared.  Once he woke up he had a great time.  The zoo is nice and shady so he didn't get too hot.  He LOVED the animals but was completely terrified of all of the birds.  Go figure.

We got a season pass (costs less than tickets for our whole family to go twice) so I'm hoping to make lots more trips this spring and summer, especially once he gets his cooling vest.

Thank you all for your prayers.  I really do believe he is out of the woods right now, but we need to keep praying.  The continued C Diff could be causing him to feel awful and run this temp.  They took another sample at the doctor's office today to see if the toxin is responding to the vancomycin at all.  ID is very concerned about how long he has had it, and how severe it has been.  I'm hoping to have some lab results (not the culture) tomorrow, and will update if I do.

Love,
Kate

Thank you for the update...I was thinking and praying for you today and just sat down for a second to see if maybe you had updated...and you had! :)
We will continue to pray for little Noah, your family, the doctors and the many decisions you all must make. We pray most of all that the Lord will give you peace, joy, strength, courage and faith through all.
I'm so glad you went to the zoo! What a wonderful fun time you must have had! I can just imagine Noah seeing all the animals.
love,
Jaynee

Dear Kate,

Since I know that Noah's doctors are in Greenville, I can "see" you all at the zoo today. Greenville is my childhood hometown, and as a little girl, I remember with great "joy" the very first elephant that the zoo got (she is no longer alive). I actually was one of the school children who donated money to buy her (named "Joy" if I remember correctly). You are right- it is a lovely, easy little zoo, and great for children to visit. I'm so glad you have the passes and can go back :-).

Still praying for Noah, and for the trip to the Father/Daughter retreat.

Many Blessings,

Sarah

Kate,

I'm glad to hear about the zoo and how much Noah enjoyed it (besides the birds). I hope his fever goes down the rest of the way.

God be with you all,

Kate, I'm so glad Noah is out of the woods for now, and is generally doing so well! I have thought of you often and wondered how things were going, but as you have said several times, no news from you is probably a good thing!! I have rejoiced in how long Noah has been OUT of the hospital and home with his family. Praying it continues for a very long time! (and not to be a nag or anything, but I'm also praying you'll have find some extra minutes sometime in the near future to post pics!!)

Blessings,

How fun waking up to the zoo! (well, other than the birds... LOL) I'm so glad he has (and will have) memories of fun things like this even on days he's had to be with doctors at their offices or at hospitals. He looks to be such a joy (just from his photos) and such a cutie!

Praising the Lord that he's doing as well as he is. Praying for continued successes... and for a wonderful weekend coming up with God's Hand so obvious for you all, esp. Hannah, showing how much He loves her and will make sure she gets her special weekend away with dad!

In Him,
Donna C

SSSOOO exciting to see God answer prayers! We prayed for him tonight in our small group too. I have a season pass for the zoo too so we'll have to make a date before it gets hot! Did you see where you can get into the Columbia zoo with that pass also? It's a good zoo too if you've not been.

Continuing to pray, Kate! That sure must have been scary not being able to wake him up, but I am glad y'all were able to enjoy the zoo!

I'm so glad Noah is well enough to stay at home. I'm assuming that means Jeff & Hannah can head off for the Vision Forum retreat after all. I will continue to pray for Noah's safey. I loved the story of the zoo. We went to the animal park here in the state a few years ago & one little boy with us was terrified of the peacocks with their feathers all open! :-)

I loved hearing of your trip to the zoo! I am a nanny for a little boy (Caleb) that turns two next month. I took him and his 8 year old brother an their next door neighbors daughter to the Wooland Park Zoo in Seattle Wa. yesterday. We had alot of fun, especially seeing the 5 month old baby gorilla, and getting Calebs 1st ride on a carousel. His happens to LOVE ALL birds. Especially ducks. Funny how the same thing can tickle one toddler pink, and scare another one! Your all in my prayers! Praise Jesus Noah is doing ok today!

The first time we took our daughter to the zoo, she was probably about 2, we hadn't been there 5 minutes yet and the first thing we passed was a parrot (that screamed VERY LOUDLY), which made our daughter (scream VERY LOUDLY lol). After she got over that, she loved it!
