Roller coaster afternoon
Whew - what an afternoon we had! Not long after I updated earlier today, Noah became extremely fussy and snarly. This is NOT typical Noah at all, and as it went on I grew concerned. After about 30 grouchy minutes, Noah started crying out for "shoes and socks" over and over, so I called the nurse - - -who discovered that Noah's IV had infiltrated and would need to be removed. His poor little foot was all swollen and must have been hurting terribly. The nurses check IV's every hour so this must have happened right after the last time it was checked.
I was beyond devastated (and so were the nurses) at the thought of another horrible treatment room experience. While I was walking Noah around and praying for him as they set up the room, one of the nurses stopped me. She pointed out that for the first time since infancy Noah had NO brovaic and NO IV. She told me that they would hold the treatment room for a while so I could take my line-free boy into the shower to play!! The showers in the rooms are huge and we had so much fun playing with the shower sprayer, tossing around wet washcloths, making bubbles, etc. Noah has never done anything like that and he really enjoyed himself. I think that having very special fun together was healing for both of us.
We had to get out eventually (Noah said "Too soon! Too soon!") and head to the treatment room. My amazing, brave boy went right in and sat down without a tear while they looked for a vein. He cried when he was stuck, but the nurse got the IV on the first try!!! The nurse had to dig around a bit so Noah has a little bruise, but only one stick. The IV is in his hand and very, very stable. You can't imagine how relieved I was to see Noah so brave and peaceful in the treatment room. I held him close the whole time and he stopped crying as soon as the nurses started taping down the IV. Praise Jesus!! He was tired when we got back to the room, so I just climbed into bed with him and held him while he fell asleep. It was a very sweet time.
Noah is still fever-free and felt well enough to sit up and color this afternoon before he lost his IV. I thought you all would like to see him . . . .

I know he's pale and fragile-looking, but isn't it amazing to see how good he looks under the circumstances??
Jeff just came to tell me that Noah woke up, so I need to go be with my sweet boy. Thank you all for your continued prayers, comments, and phone calls!!
Blessings,
Kate
